Too little, too late for defending champ Giants

Giants quarterback Eli Manning, right, talks with Eagles quarterback Michael Vick after the game.

By TOM CANAVAN

updated 4:29 p.m. ET Dec. 30, 2012

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - There will be no repeat for the New York Giants. Not even a playoff berth.

The Giants (9-7) saw their playoff hopes end minutes after posting a 42-7 win over the Philadelphia Eagles when Chicago beat Detroit 26-24 to eliminate the defending Super Bowl champions from playoff contention.

It marks the seventh straight season the Super Bowl champion has failed to win a playoff game the following year.

The Giants came into the regular-season finale needing to beat the Eagles (4-12), have Chicago and Minnesota lose and then have Dallas either lose or tie against Washington to advance to the postseason. The Bears' win brought a quick end to that scenario playing out.

Eli Manning did his part with a career-best five touchdown passes, and fans who stuck around were chanting "Let's Go Lions" as the final moments ticked off in the Chicago-Detroit game.

"Nine and seven was good enough last year," Manning said after a game that might have been Andy Reid's final one as the Eagles' coach. "It wasn't good enough this year and we knew it wouldn't be."

The Giants put themselves in a tough spot to reach the playoffs, losing five of seven prior to Sunday, including two games by a combined 67-14 margin to playoff-bound Atlanta and Baltimore.

Manning woke up the offense with touchdown passes of 3 and 38 yards to rookie Rueben Randle, a 15-yarder to David Wilson and a 24-yarder to Victor Cruz just before halftime for a 35-3 lead. He's the first Giants player to throw five TD passes in a game since Phil Simms did it against the St. Louis Cardinals in 1980. His fifth score was a 1-yard pass to fullback Henry Hynoski in the fourth quarter.

Manning finished 13 of 21 for 208 yards and no interceptions. Ahmad Bradshaw, who rushed for 107 yards and passed the 1,000-yard rushing mark for the second time in his career, also scored on a 1-yard run.

Starting for the first time since a concussion against Dallas in early November, Michael Vick threw a 7-yard touchdown to Jeremy Maclin. Vick finished 19 of 35 for 197 yards and one interception before being replaced by Trent Edwards late.

The Eagles surprised the Giants on a cold and windy day with an onside kick to open the game. Vick and the Eagles took over at their 47 and got a first down at the Giants 40.

However, turnovers have hurt the Eagles all season, and it happened again when Stevie Brown came up with his eighth interception and returned the ball to the Eagles 26.

Manning needed four plays to score, finding Randle over the middle for his second touchdown of his rookie season. His third came on the following series when New York went 74 yards in five plays with Randle catching a go-pattern down the left sideline from 38-yards out for a 14-0 lead.

It was all Giants after that as New York scored on its first three possessions. The third touchdown was another pass to a rookie, with Wilson catching a 15-yarder after running a wheel route out of the backfield.

Philadelphia's only touchdown came in the opening minutes of the second quarter, and it might have been Vick's last with the team. The Eagles have to decide whether to keep the oft-injured quarterback or turn things over to Nick Foles.

Bradshaw's 1-yard run stretched the lead to 28-7 later in the quarter and Manning and Cruz hooked on a salsa-inducing touchdown with 10 seconds left in the half, just two plays after a fourth-down gamble by Reid failed.

Flesh Wounds: The Culture of Cosmetic SurgeryFlesh Wounds: The Culture of Cosmetic SurgeryWhen did cosmetic surgery become a common practice, the stuff of everyday conversation? In a work that combines a provocative ethnography of plastic surgery and a penetrating analysis of beauty and feminism, Virginia L. Blum searches out the social conditions and imperatives that have made ours a culture of cosmetic surgery. From diverse viewpoints, ranging from cosmetic surgery patient to feminist cultural critic, she looks into the realities and fantasies that have made physical malleability an essential part of our modern-day identity.
For a cultural practice to develop such a tenacious grip, Blum argues, it must be fed from multiple directions: some pragmatic, including the profit motive of surgeons and the increasing need to appear young on the job; some philosophical, such as the notion that a new body is something you can buy or that appearance changes your life. Flesh Wounds is an inquiry into the ideas and practices that have forged such a culture. Tying the boom in cosmetic surgery to a culture-wide trend toward celebrity, Blum explores our growing compulsion to emulate what remain for most of us two-dimensional icons. Moving between personal experiences and observations, interviews with patients and surgeons, and readings of literature and cultural moments, her book reveals the ways in which the practice of cosmetic surgery captures the condition of identity in contemporary culture.

Texas 31, Oregon State 27

Oregon State has completed one of the country's biggest turnarounds, while Texas is trying to salvage a season considered a disappointment by its lofty standards.

Both the 15th-ranked Beavers and the Longhorns have dealt with uncertain quarterback situations leading up to Saturday's Alamo Bowl in San Antonio.

Oregon State (9-3) won six more games than it did last season, tying the largest improvement in the FBS. As a result, the Beavers are heading to their first bowl game since 2009, when they lost to BYU in the MAACO Bowl Las Vegas.

Their three victories in 2011 were the fewest under coach Mike Riley since they won three in 1997 - the first season of Riley's initial tenure at the school.

"It was really just a combination of two very simple things, but not easy to accomplish obviously," said Riley, who owns a 5-1 record in bowl games. "The fact that we had some good, young, talented players, and they had a very good offseason. They stayed together, worked out together, had great intentions. So just development and hard work put together I think were the key elements in getting better."

The Beavers' quarterback situation was in flux all season due to injuries. Sean Mannion led the team to a 4-0 start before the sophomore suffered a knee injury that required surgery, paving the way for junior Cody Vaz to take over before he succumbed to a high ankle sprain.

Mannion regained the starting job - and struggled with four interceptions in a 48-24 loss to Oregon - but still started in the team's finale, a 77-3 blowout of Nicholls State.

Mannion went 20 of 23 for 231 yards and two touchdowns, but Vaz, who completed 14 of 17 passes for 190 yards and three TDs, also saw extensive action.

The duo helped the Beavers rank 15th nationally with 316.5 passing yards per game, and Riley named Vaz as his starter on Dec. 22 just prior to the team traveling to San Antonio.

Texas has gone 8-4 - a success for most - but a third consecutive season without a BCS bowl appearance had some questioning coach Mack Brown's job security. University president Bill Powers wrote in his blog Dec. 6 that Brown has his "full support," and will remain as coach.

The Longhorns are 9-4 in bowl games under Brown, but are 21-16 overall since losing the 2010 BCS championship game to Alabama.

"I'm fortunate to be at a place where the standards are very high and we're going to fight to make sure we get back to those standards," Brown said.

"If you ask me if I'm happy with three years of non-BCS games, I would say no. That's for me, much less everybody else."

David Ash started Texas' first 11 games under center but was benched in favor of Case McCoy during the team's Thanksgiving loss to TCU.

McCoy won't see the field Saturday, however, after he and injured linebacker Jordan Hicks were sent home for violating team rules. The players broke curfew and KENS-TV reports that police were investigating two unidentified Texas players in an alleged sexual assault at a San Antonio hotel.

Even before the suspensions were announced, Brown had decided to will go back to Ash, who has completed 67.7 percent of his passes with 17 touchdowns and seven interceptions.

"You look at some of the things David did this year and I think he's still in the top 10 in passing efficiency," Brown said. "When he started poorly, he had more trouble than when he started right but he had some great games and we need to build on those."

The sophomore faces a difficult challenge.

Oregon State intercepted 19 passes this year, tied for sixth-most in the country, and the Beavers' 30 forced turnovers are tied for 12th. Seven of the Longhorns' 15 turnovers this season came in their last two games, including five interceptions.

Texas' defense struggled through the first seven games, allowing 35.0 points per game and 472.1 yards, but improved late, trimming those numbers to 21.6 and 328.4 in the final five contests.

The Longhorns' secondary will be tasked with slowing down Markus Wheaton, who ranks 11th nationally with 100.6 receiving yards per game.

Wheaton caught 12 passes against Nicholls State, bringing his career total to 224 and surpassing James Rodgers' school record of 222, set last year.

"I looked up to James when I got here - he was amazing," Wheaton said. "I knew he was as good as they get - his work ethic, his dedication, and I really wanted to be just like him as far as what he did on the field. And breaking the record I feel like I have worked, all of the hard work paid off."

This will be the third meeting in this series, with Texas winning the previous two. The most recent was Texas' 61-16 rout in Austin in 1987.

To stay perfect against Oregon State, the Longhorns will have to win without one of their co-offensive coordinators. Bryan Harsin has been named coach at Arkansas State, leaving Major Applewhite to handle the play calling.

Texas also announced that wide receivers coach Darrell Wyatt will be promoted to co-offensive coordinator.

The Longhorns won their only previous appearance in the Alamo Bowl, defeating Iowa 26-24 in 2006.

Watch Randi Zuckerberg Have a Facebook Freakout Over Her Photo Going Viral

You probably already read about Randi Zuckerberg?s faux-privacy violation on Facebook this week. But odds are you?re not part of her inner circle. Lucky for you, a tipster who?s ?Friends? with RZ gave up the goods directly from her wall.

Watch Randi Zuckerberg Have a Facebook Freakout Over Her Photo Going Viral

While Randi was admonishing people for lacking ?human decency? on Twitter?dispatches she?d delete shortly after writing?she was fretting to her vast Friend following about how to handle the situation. The situation being that a completely innocuous photo she?d inadvertently made public through tagging was circulating the Internet. And to think, it was a viral hit even without the original caption: ?Mark convinced everyone to download the ?poke? app, so now my family is standing around sexting. Awk. Ward.? Truly! Where was Priscilla?

So she asked: should she ignore the quasi-controversy? Was it just a slow news day? (Which, yes, it was)
Watch Randi Zuckerberg Have a Facebook Freakout Over Her Photo Going Viral

Hundreds of Randi?s Silicon Valley chums chimed in, including Google exec Hunter Walk, begging RZ to let it go.

Watch Randi Zuckerberg Have a Facebook Freakout Over Her Photo Going Viral

Ignore, ignore, ignore, the people said. Tech investor Michael Arrington chimed in with something incoherent.

Watch Randi Zuckerberg Have a Facebook Freakout Over Her Photo Going ViralFormer Microsoft big shot Robert Scoble warned that this will only get worse with the spread of Google Glass. Venture capitalist Dave McClure referred fondly to the time the three of them played Rock Band in 2008. Still, the friends all said let it go.

She never did.

It?s strange to look inside, from a friend?s point of view, and see Mark Zuckerberg?s sister miss the mark by so many yards. When something is out there, it?s out there, free to be shared like any other rumour, joke, or dog meme?and Randi?s family is rich because of it. It?s not even Facebook?s fault. No privacy setting could have prevented this, short of blocking everyone. Although whining about ?decency? should make our eyes roll, she?s got the human part spot on?so long as we?re friends with humans on Facebook, those same people are free to spread whichever parts of your life they choose, and spread it widely. Because we like doing it, and that?s what Facebook is for.

Randi?s brother?s?life goal?is ?Making the world more open and connected,? and he?s doing a good job at it. But the more connected we are, the quicker we?re just going to be the way we were a century ago. We like funny things. We like being in on the joke. And when you?re a self-appointed tech celeb, your frustration becomes a currency anyone will spend. One of your?over 2,300?Facebook friends sold you out for a quick laugh Randi, and they?ll keep doing it over and over again, to all of us, so long as we?re all making money for your brother.

Construction set to begin on new PC school | | Franklin Free Press

John Pilati

Franklin Free Press

?

The new year will bring new construction to the town of Phil Campbell in the form of the much-anticipated Phil Campbell School building.

Franklin County superintendent of schools Gary Williams said the contractor will begin mobilizing this week with bulldozers scheduled to start running the first week of January. Williams estimates an 18-24-month construction period for the 95,000-square-foot project.

After original bids opened in October came in over the allotted budget amount, the Franklin County Board of Education approved the project architect, McKee and Associates, to negotiate with the low-bid contractor, Blalock Building Company of Trussville, to amend the project down to the $17.3 million figure that was ultimately accepted, Williams said.

That figure represents a $6 million downward departure from Blalock?s original bid. The primary changes in the revised bid are that no stand-alone auditorium will be constructed. A stage will be installed in the gym with auditorium capabilities. Additionally, plans that called for a new track around the football field, which was to be moved, have been set aside. A new track will still be built, with the likely location being behind the elementary school on the old baseball field site, Williams said.

Original plans also called for construction of a new field house. Although those plans have been downsized, construction of a field house is still planned, Williams said.

The construction project will include a major drainage improvement that will begin at Highway 13 and run a drainage line west under the football field. Drainage will then run into a gulley west of the stadium.

In spite of the delays and the revisions in the school plans, Williams is confident the new school will more than meet the expectations of the community.

?It?s going to be a great school and something the community will be proud of,? he said. ?We had to cut a few things, but nothing that prevents it from being a workable school that will meet all our requirements.?

A pre-construction meeting was held last Thursday among Williams, assistant superintendent Donald Borden, Blalock officials, the project architect and State of Alabama inspectors. That meeting was the final hurdle before construction can begin, Williams explained.

He does not expect any disruption of daily school operations at Phil Campbell once construction begins.

?We don?t expect any problems,? Williams said. ?We?re moving the school itself toward Highway 13, and the mobile units will stay up until all construction is done. Then that area will be a parking lot.?

Williams said the school will house seventh-12th graders at Phil Campbell.

?We?re hoping it will be ready for the fall of 2014, but no later than the following spring semester,? he said. ?That is our goal, but lots of factors affect that. Surely by January of 2015, though, we will be able to be in the new school.?

Mars rover snaps amazing self-portrait

NASA has snapped its most amazing self-portrait yet of the Curiosity rover on Mars, showing the robot posing with its ultimate destination: a huge Martian mountain.

The new view of Curiosity on Mars is actually a mosaic of dozens of high-definition color photos taken by the rover between Oct. 31 and Nov. 1. The image shows Curiosity surrounded by the tracks of its wheels, with the 3-mile-high Mount Sharp rising into the sky in the distance.

NASA featured the latest Curiosity portrait as its image of the day Dec. 27 after releasing the photo earlier this month.

  1. Space news from NBCNews.com

Science editor Alan Boyle's blog: The storms of Saturn ripple through the frame of a black-and-white close-up captured by the Cassini orbiter on Christmas Eve.

    3. Mars rover spends holidays at 'Grandma's House'
    4. After setbacks, Russia boosts space spending

The prominent Mount Sharp is the central peak of Curiosity's vast Gale Crater landing site. Another mountain in the image, on the rover's left, makes up the northern wall of the expansive crater.

To create the eye-popping Mars photo, Curiosity used its Mars Hand Lens Imager (MAHLI), a powerful camera mounted at the end of the rover's robotic arm. Curiosity turned the camera on itself much like a human tourist might when traveling alone, snapping a series of photos that rover team members then stitched together into a high-definition composite view.

The rover had to move its robotic arm through more than 50 positions in a single day to capture its entire car-size body on camera. ?NASA scientists used a test version of Curiosity on Earth to practice the Martian photo session.

NASA unveiled an earlier version of Curiosity portrait, composed out of 55 separate images, in early November, but the latest view includes significantly more detail and a wider view.

The Mars rover Curiosity is headed toward a spot near the base of Mount Sharp called Glenelg, and will continue to perform experiments along the way. The $2.5 billion rover's primary mission is to determine if its Gale crater landing site could have ever supported primitive microbial life.

Humidity Levels Explain U.S. Flu Winter Peak

60-Second Science

In temperate regions, the influenza virus fares best when the weather is dry. Karen Hopkin reports.

More 60-Second Science

Cases of the flu peak in winter in the U.S. But why? A new study suggests it?s not the heat, but the humidity. Or lack thereof. Because in temperate regions, the influenza virus fares best when the weather is dry. That?s according to work published in the journal PLoS One. [Wan Yang, Subbiah Elankumaran and Linsey C. Marr, Relationship between Humidity and Influenza A Viability in Droplets and Implications for Influenza?s Seasonality]

Scientists have long debated why flu erupts when the days grow chilly. Is it that we spend more time cooped up together indoors? Or is there something about the virus that likes it cold and dry? To find out, researchers suspended influenza virus in a solution that mimics human mucus. They incubated this infectious soup at different humidities and measured viral survival.

And they found that at low humidity, the fake mucus dries up and the virus does just fine. But when the humidity tops 50%, the droplets only partially evaporate, leaving behind a solution that?s too salty for the virus to thrive.

Interestingly, the virus does well again when the humidity reaches 100 percent, evaporation stops and the salinity of the mucus bath is juuust right. That could explain why the flu prefers to hit the tropics in rainy season. And why you should always keep your nose clean, but moist.

?Karen Hopkin

Frequency Tunes Out the Noise When Tuning In to Videos

One of the most irritating things about enjoying videos, movies and TV shows online is the sheer number of places you must navigate to in order to get the content. Each of the major television networks has its own channel, some of which serve up some full episodes some of the time, while others just serve up teaser clips and ongoing snippets, like the opening monologues for "The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson."

'Rescue Me' singer Fontella Bass dies

(AP) ? Fontella Bass, a St. Louis-born soul singer who hit the top of the R&B charts with "Rescue Me" in 1965, has died. She was 72.

Bass died Wednesday night at a St. Louis hospice of complications from a heart attack suffered three weeks ago, her daughter, Neuka Mitchell, said. Bass had also suffered a series of strokes over the past seven years.

"She was an outgoing person," Mitchell said of her mother. "She had a very big personality. Any room she entered she just lit the room up, whether she was on stage or just going out to eat."

Bass was born into a family with deep musical roots. Her mother was gospel singer Martha Bass, one of the Clara Ward Singers. Her younger brother, David Peaston, had a string of R&B hits in the 1980s and 1990s. Peaston died in February at age 54.

Bass' began performing at a young age, singing in her church's choir at age 6. She was surrounded by music, often traveling on national tours with her mother and her gospel group.

Her interest turned from gospel to R&B when she was a teenager and she began her professional career at the Showboat Club in north St. Louis at age 17. She eventually auditioned for Chess Records and landed a recording contract, first as a duet artist. Her duet with Bobby McClure, "Don't Mess Up a Good Thing," reached No. 5 on the R&B charts and No. 33 on the Billboard Top 100 in 1965.

She co-wrote and later that year recorded "Rescue Me," reaching No. 1 on the R&B charts and No. 4 on the Billboard pop singles chart. Bass's powerful voice bore a striking resemblance to that of Aretha Franklin, who is often misidentified as the singer of that chart-topping hit.

Bass had a few other modest hits but by her own accounts developed a reputation as a troublemaker because she demanded more artistic control, and more money for her songs. She haggled over royalty rights to "Rescue Me" for years before reaching a settlement in the late 1980s, Mitchell said. She sued American Express over the use of "Rescue Me" in a commercial, settling for an undisclosed amount in 1993.

"Rescue Me" has been covered by many top artists, including Linda Ronstadt, Cher, Melissa Manchester and Pat Benatar. Franklin eventually sang a form of it too ? as "Deliver Me" in a Pizza Hut TV ad in 1991.

Bass lived briefly in Europe before returning to St. Louis in the early 1970s, where she and husband Lester Bowie raised their family. She recorded occasionally, including a 1995 gospel album, "No Ways Tired," that earned a Grammy nomination.

Bass was inducted into the St. Louis Hall of Fame in 2000.

Funeral arrangements for Bass were incomplete. She is survived by four children. Bowie died in 1999.

People with mental disorders more likely to have experienced domestic violence

Dec. 26, 2012 ? Men and women with mental health disorders, across all diagnoses, are more likely to have experienced domestic violence than the general population, according to new research from King's College London's Institute of Psychiatry, in collaboration with the University of Bristol. Previous studies into the link between domestic violence and mental health problems have mainly focused on depression, but this is the first study to look at a wide range of mental health problems in both male and female victims.

In this study, funded by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) and published December 26 in PLOS ONE, researchers reviewed data from 41 studies worldwide. Compared to women without mental health problems, women with depressive disorders were around 2 and a ? times more likely to have experienced domestic violence over their adult lifetime (prevalence estimate 45.8%); women with anxiety disorders were over 3 and a ? times more likely (prevalence estimate 27.6%); and women with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) were around 7 times more likely (prevalence estimate 61.0%).

Women with other disorders including obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), eating disorders, common mental health problems, schizophrenia and bipolar disorder were also at an increased risk of domestic violence compared to women without mental health problems. Men with all types of mental disorders were also at an increased risk of domestic violence. However, prevalence estimates for men were lower than those for women, indicating that it is less common for men to be victims of repeated severe domestic violence.

Professor Louise Howard, senior author of the study from King's Institute of Psychiatry, says: "In this study, we found that both men and women with mental health problems are at an increased risk of domestic violence. The evidence suggests that there are two things happening: domestic violence can often lead to victims developing mental health problems, and people with mental health problems are more likely to experience domestic violence."

This study is part of PROVIDE, a 5-year research programme on domestic violence funded by NIHR. Professor Gene Feder, co-author of the study from the University of Bristol's School of Social and Community Medicine and chief investigator of PROVIDE says: "We hope this review will draw attention to the mental health needs of survivors of domestic violence and remind general practitioners and mental health teams that experience of domestic violence may lie behind the presentation of mental health problems."

Internationally, the lifetime prevalence of physical and/or sexual partner violence among women ranges from 15-71%. In the UK, the2010/11 British Crime Survey reported that 27% of women and 17% of men had experienced partner abuse during their lifetime, with women experiencing more repeated and severe violence than men. From March 2013, the UK Home Office will be amending its definition of domestic violence to include 16 and 17 year olds, and will be defined as "any incident or pattern of incidents of controlling, coercive or threatening behaviour, violence or abuse between those aged 16 or over who are or have been intimate partners or family members regardless of gender or sexuality. This can encompass, but is not limited to, psychological, physical, sexual, financial or emotional abuse."

Professor Howard concludes: "Mental health professionals need to be aware of the link between domestic violence and mental health problems, and ensure that their patients are safe from domestic violence and are treated for the mental health impact of such abuse."

Christmas On Mars

At John Scalzi's blog, astronomer and science fiction author Diane Turnshek writes about spending the holidays at the Mars Desert Research Station, a place in Utah where The Mars Society is running test missions to figure out proper procedures for living in a habitat on Mars. She says,
"In sim, we eat rehydrated/dehydrated food, have a 20-minute lag time for communication, spend time in airlocks before going out on the surface and conserve water (Navy showers every three days). A row of parked ATVs out in front awaits us for our more distant EVAs. We have to be careful?the nearest hospital is forty miles away on back roads and there?s no cell service here on Mars. Reports are sent via email to Mission Support every evening in which we have to clearly explain any technical or medical problems and they respond in kind. I?ve been working in the Musk Observatory, taking CCD photometry of eclipsing binary stars." You can also read the mission's daily crew reports and browse through their photostream.

Jack Klugman Dead: 'The Odd Couple' Actor Dies At 90

Jack Klugman, star of the much-beloved sitcom 'The Odd Couple', has died, his attorney told KTRK.

He was 90.

Klugman's son Adam confirmed the report to the AP.

According to his attorney, he died peacefully at his home in California. He is survived by his wife Peggy, two sons and two grandchildren.

Klugman is best known for his starring role in 'The Odd Couple.' He played Oscar Madison, the sloppy roommate to Felix Unger, played by Tony Randall. He also starred in the Academy Award-nominated "Twelve Angry Men."

Here's more from the AP:

LOS ANGELES ? Jack Klugman, the prolific, craggy-faced character actor and regular guy who was loved by millions as the messy one in TV's "The Odd Couple" and the crime-fighting coroner in "Quincy, M.E.," died Monday, a son said. He was 90.

Klugman, who lost his voice to throat cancer in the 1980s and trained himself to speak again, died with his wife at his side.

"He had a great life and he enjoyed every moment of it and he would encourage others to do the same," son Adam Klugman said.

Adam Klugman said he was spending Christmas with his brother, David, and their families. Their father had been convalescing for some time but had apparently died suddenly and they were not sure of the exact cause.

"His sons loved him very much," David Klugman said. "We'll carry on in his spirit."

Never anyone's idea of a matinee idol, Klugman remained a popular star for decades simply by playing the type of man you could imagine running into at a bar or riding on a subway with ? gruff, but down to earth, his tie stained and a little loose, a racing form under his arm, a cigar in hand during the days when smoking was permitted.

He brought a city actor ideal for "The Odd Couple," which ran from 1970 to 1975 and was based on Neil Simon's play about mismatched roommates, divorced New Yorkers who end up living together. The show teamed Klugman ? the sloppy sports writer Oscar Madison ? and Tony Randall ? the fussy photographer Felix Unger ? in the roles played by Walter Matthau and Art Carney on Broadway and Matthau and Jack Lemmon in the 1968 film. Klugman had already had a taste of the show when he replaced Matthau on Broadway and he learned to roll with the quick-thinking Randall, with whom he had worked in 1955 on the CBS series "Appointment with Adventure."

"There's nobody better to improvise with than Tony," Klugman said. "A script might say, `Oscar teaches Felix football.' There would be four blank pages. He would provoke me into reacting to what he did. Mine was the easy part."

They were battlers on screen, and the best of friends in real life. When Randall died in 2004 at age 84, Klugman told CNN: "A world without Tony Randall is a world that I cannot recognize."

In "Quincy, M.E.," which ran from 1976 to 1983, Klugman played an idealistic, tough-minded medical examiner who tussled with his boss by uncovering evidence of murder in cases where others saw natural causes.

"We had some wonderful writers," he said in a 1987 Associated Press interview. "Quincy was a muckraker, like Upton Sinclair, who wrote about injustices. He was my ideal as a youngster, my author, my hero.

"Everybody said, `Quincy'll never be a hit.' I said, `You guys are wrong. He's two heroes in one, a cop and a doctor.' A coroner has power. He can tell the police commissioner to investigate a murder. I saw the opportunity to do what I'd gotten into the theater to do ? give a message.

"They were going to do cops and robbers with `Quincy.' I said, `You promised me I could do causes.' They said, `Nobody wants to see that.' I said, `Look at the success of "60 Minutes." They want to see it if you present it as entertainment.'"

For his 1987 role as 81-year-old Nat in the Broadway production of "I'm Not Rappaport," Klugman wore leg weights to learn to shuffle like an elderly man. He said he would wear them for an hour before each performance, "to remember to keep that shuffle."

"The guy is so vital emotionally, but physically he can't be," Klugman said.

"We treat old people so badly. There is nothing easy about 80."

The son of Russian Jewish immigrants, he was born in Philadelphia and began his acting career in college drama (Carnegie Institute of Technology). After serving in the Army during World War II, he went on to summer stock and off-Broadway, rooming with fellow actor Charles Bronson as both looked for paying jobs.

He made his Broadway debut in 1952 in a revival of "Golden Boy." His film credits included Sidney Lumet's "12 Angry Men" and Blake Edwards' "Days of Wine and Roses" and an early television highlight was appearing with Humphrey Bogart and Henry Fonda in a production of "The Petrified Forest."

His performance in the classic 1959 musical "Gypsy" brought him a Tony nomination for best featured (supporting) actor in a musical.

He also appeared in several episodes of "The Twilight Zone," including a memorable 1963 one in which he played a negligent father whose son is seriously wounded in Vietnam. His other TV shows included "The Defenders" and the soap opera "The Greatest Gift."

In a 1987 interview in the New York Daily News, he said, "once I did three hourlong shows in 2 1/2 weeks. Think we'd do that now? Huh! But then it was great. I did summer stock, played the classics. Me!"

Throat cancer took away his raspy voice for several years in the 1980s. When he was back on the stage for a 1993 revival of "Three Men on a Horse," The Associated Press review said, "His voice may be a little scratchy but his timing is as impeccable as ever."

"The only really stupid thing I ever did in my life was to start smoking," he said in 1996. Seeing people smoking in television and films, he added, "disgusts me, it makes me so angry ? kids are watching."

In his later years, he guest-starred on TV series including "Third Watch" and "Crossing Jordan" and appeared in a 2010 theatrical film, "Camera Obscura."

Klugman's hobby was horse racing and he eventually took up raising them, too.

A horse Klugman co-owned, Jacklin Klugman, finished third in 1980's Kentucy Derby and fourth in that year's Preakness Stakes.

"I always loved to gamble," he said. "I never got close to a horse. Fate dealt me a terrible blow when it gave me a good horse the first time out. I thought how easy this is.

"Now I love being around them."

Klugman's wife, actress-comedian Brett Somers, played his ex-wife, Blanche, in the "Odd Couple" series. The couple, who married in 1953 and had two sons, Adam and David, had been estranged for years at the time of her death in 2007.

In February 2008, at age 85, Klugman married longtime girlfriend Peggy Crosby. His attorney Larry Larson wrote in an email that Klugman is also survived by two grandchildren and that memorial services have not been set.

In 1997, Klugman was sued by an ex-girlfriend, Barbara Neugass, who claimed he had promised to support her for the rest of her life. But a jury rejected her claim.

Ryan Lanza: ?I am a victim?

(Facebook/NYP)

Adam Lanza's brother has taken to Facebook to mourn the 27 people--including his mother and 20 schoolchildren--killed by Adam in Newtown, Conn., on Dec. 14, before the younger Lanza turned the gun on himself.

"I am a victim," Ryan Lanza told the New York Post via Facebook on Saturday. "I [lost] my mom and brother."

The 24-year-old, who lives in Hoboken, N.J., was initially misidentified by several media outlets as a suspect on the day of the shootings. He was questioned by police and later released.

On Facebook, Ryan Lanza posted a photo of Adam under the message:

R.I.P.
Adam Peter Lanza
April 22, 1992- Dec. 14, 2012(20 years old)
"I will miss you bro. I will always love you as long as I live"
-Ryan

When another Facebook user wrote that Adam deserved to "rot in hell," Ryan responded: ?You have no right to call my brother names when he isn?t here no more. Just let my brother rest in peace. Please. Respect that."

Ryan also posted a photo of his mother, Nancy, who was shot and killed by Adam in their Newtown home before the troubled 20-year-old fired his way into Sandy Hook Elementary School, killing 20 children and 6 adults.

?You all will be truly be missed,? Ryan wrote on Facebook. ?God Bless.?

Ryan Lanza's Facebook profile is private, though at least dozen pages have been launched supporting him in the wake of the massacre.

"The real shooter was his brother," a message on one of them reads. "Please stop blaming him for the shooting. He had nothing to do with it."

23 Dec

I installed some speed reading apps and tested them. I?ve so far notices a few ?categories? or groups of equals:

  • One kind exists mostly from showing a text word by word in the middle of the screen. Showing each word a very short time and so you can read at a high wpm because you never need to move your eyes.
  • Another kind is merely a speed reading article disguised as app.
  • Another kind is no speed reading app but just a reading app with a fancy name.
  • Yet another kind is training in the form of news/actually.
  • And the last kind is a training app, not for your own stuff but purely for training.

I only tested them quickly and unions talked the non-interesting. But they aren?t quite what I?m looking for. Maybe I should write one myself for training and guided reading.

Self Improvement Times: Best Tips On Improving Self Esteem

Improving ones self esteem is in many people's mind. There are two main factors on improving your self esteem, it's either you actively pursuing it or you subconsciously working on it. You may first want to identify what makes you feel awkward or shy when you are interacting with people.

Improving self esteem is easier when you have a subliminal audio to listen to. There are subliminal messages hidden underneath relaxing music and the messages are contained with positive affirmations that only your subconscious mind can understand. So, while you are physically working on your self esteem, your subconscious mind is also helping you at the same time.

Here are some easy ways on improving your self esteem:

1. Set a viable goal for yourself. Visualize how you want to feel and start acting like that when you are interacting with people. Try to think that you are the person that you are interacting with. Can you picture an interesting person? Set a believable goal for yourself, for example: within the next two weeks, when you interact with people you feel like you are a good conversationalist.

2. Be positive. When you want to practice your self esteem, begin the conversation. If you are in a crowd like a party, begin introducing yourself to a person who is alone. This is a way to slowly improve your self esteem and you won't feel that you are left behind. Now, prepare for your meeting. Take a deep breath and stand with a good posture so you feel more confident. If you have difficulty approaching people, you may use subliminal messages with positive affirmations. These positive affirmations will make you feel important and that you are a good person in general. When you give importance to yourself then improving you self esteem will be easier.

3. Extend a firm handshake and look directly in the eyes of the person. The firm handshake and the direct eye contact signify self esteem. Your handshake should say that you are really glad meeting that person and your eye contact should say that you are interested meeting that person. Approach the person by saying something positive to her like "I love your earrings".

4. Always listen. Listen to your conversation and respond visibly. If you are in the process of improving your self esteem then you could practice in the mirror so you know how you look when you are actually meeting a person. Again, clear your mind before creating a conversation so you could have more space for listening. You can clear your mind more effectively if you use the subliminal audio that has subliminal messages for mind clarity.

5. Respond. Visibly respond to the person like nodding or smiling, this way you can create good aura for the both of you. If you respond, you may begin in "I agree" or "I have the same experience". You can get a more positive response through subliminal messages' that release self esteem messages to your subconscious mind.

6. Feel good about yourself. Always feel that you are important, value yourself. A subliminal audio that imparts positive affirmations can always help you on improving your self esteem. When you feel good about yourself then people will see you as a happy person and they will be more interested in you.

Egypt's Brotherhood claims draft charter passes

(AP) ? Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood claims that the disputed Islamist-backed constitution has passed with a 64 percent 'yes' vote after a two-round referendum.

The unofficial results announced by the Islamist group Sunday come a day before the election commission is expected to announce the final official tally for voting organized over two weeks.

According to the Brotherhood tally based on results from individual polling stations as well as voting abroad, around 64 percent of 16.6 million approved the constitution. Brotherhood totals have been accurate for earlier elections.

The local media has reported comparable results. The comparatively low turnout of 32 percent of eligible voters, as well as allegations by the opposition of voting violations, threatens to undermine the constitution's legitimacy and keep Egypt polarized.

We do not need to tell that all the American can appear in a difficult situation as the financial situation does not change but people need to get prepared.
