'Moth-ers' Shine a Light on Nighttime Beauties

Think moths are nothing more than drab, little brown fliers stalking your wool sweaters? The folks behind National Moth Week, happening now, want to change that perception. Rutgers University moth expert Elena Tartaglia describes the diversity of moths and the role that they play in nature, and gives some tips on how to become a "moth-er."

'The Way, Way Back' movie review: Coming-of-age dramatic comedy ...

It's bad enough that he is relegated to the way, way back seat of his mother's boyfriend's "classic" Buick station wagon -- if there indeed is such a thing. You know the place: the rear-facing seat that makes it impossible for anyone to look cool, much less if that person is a 14-year-old boy. But for Duncan, that's just the beginning of his troubles.

Mired deep in the throes of teenage awkwardness, he is fatherless, he is friendless and -- forced to spend the summer at said Buick-driving boyfriend's beach house -- he is utterly alone. Technically speaking there are people there, circulating in and out of his general vicinity. But they're there only in a physical sense.

His mother, for example, is too busy trying to start over after the end of a bad marriage to give Duncan any attention. As for her boyfriend, his disinterest -- even disdain -- for Duncan couldn't be more obvious than his beach house's need for a coat of paint.

From an emotional standpoint, the way, way back seat of that Buick might as well be a deserted island.

Duncan and his teenage woes are the center of the coming-of-age dramatic comedy, "The Way, Way Back," and while it all might sound like well-covered ground -- you know: hopelessly awkward kid struggles to transition from boyhood to manhood -- it makes for a compelling and surprisingly sweet ride. Along the way, what easily could have become a total thematic retread ends up being a refreshingly warm release that doubles as an antidote to the traditional monsters-vs.-robots summertime fare.

Credit is largely due to first-time directors Nat Faxon and Jim Rush, two actors-turned-screenwriters who successfully make the transition to directors here after sharing the best adapted screenplay Oscar for "The Descendants" in 2011. Not only does their "Way, Way Back" script move along briskly, but they've managed to populate their film with a fantastic cast.?

Toni Collette ("The Sixth Sense") portrays Duncan's emotionally overtaxed mother, with AnnaSophia Robb ("Because of Winn-Dixie") as the pretty girl next door whose mere presence sends Duncan into fits of embarrassing babbling. The linchpin to it all, though, is relative newcomer Liam James as Duncan.

Viewers of the USA Network series "Psych" might recognize him as Young Shawn in that show's regular flashback segments, but this is James' first real chance to seize a leading role, and he acquits himself nicely. Telegraphing teenage angst and awkwardness with his every move -- and even when he's not moving or saying anything -- his Duncan is believable and, more importantly, entirely sympathetic.

Every bit as key is Steve Carell, once more demonstrating his range as an actor who can walk credibly in the worlds of both drama ("Little Miss Sunshine," "Seeking a Friend for the End of the World") and goofball comedy ("Anchorman," "The Office"). Here, he gets the thankless -- but essential -- role of Duncan's mother's boyfriend, Trent, an emotionally abusive boor whose idea of constructive criticism is to inform Duncan that he ranks a "3" on a scale of 1 to 10.

Along the way, Carell also showcases his generosity as an actor. Playing a despicable, self-absorbed jerk, he is entirely unlikeable. But his job here isn't to be liked. It's to bully Duncan emotionally and to stand back as the rest of the cast get all the funny lines.

Early on, Allison Janney is the chief beneficiary there, playing Trent's boozy, good-time-Charlie neighbor. At first glance, she is a hoot -- the kind of person you'd love to have a few margaritas with -- but she is also a sad and pitiful woman, one who wears her desperation her sleeve. She's very much like all the adults in Duncan's life.

Until, that is, he meets Owen, the manager of a nearby water park who takes the kid under his wing. In addition to giving him a job, he also ends up giving Duncan the one thing an awkward 14-year-old needs: a sense that somebody actually cares what happens to him.

Granted, that sounds far mushier than Owen would ever let on. Played wonderfully by the chameleonic Sam Rockwell, he is a fast-talking, wise-cracking man-child who plays Pac-Man when he has spare time and who can't seem to take anything seriously. Twenty years ago, one suspects, Bill Murray would have nailed this role.

Secretly, though, Owen knows just how Duncan feels. It's also clear that co-directors Faxon and Rash (who play supporting roles as water park employees Roddy and Lewis) know exactly how it feels -- perhaps even remember how it feels -- to be a 14-year-old nobody. That imbues their film with a sense of authenticity and a vital relatability, as Duncan becomes a sympathetic Everyteen, a loveable square peg in a world of obnoxiously round holes.

Best of all, they do all that without weighing their film down with emotional baggage. Often, this sort of movie takes a dark turn somewhere around two-thirds of the way through when it's time to deliver its Very Serious Message. And make no mistake, there are dramatic moments in "The Way, Way Back," as well as some plot turns that ramp up the emotional investment. But Faxon and Rash manage to pull it off without drinking too deeply from the well of despair that so many writers relish.

What we get is the rare film that manages to be breezy while also being meaningful. "The Way, Way Back" is way, way good -- and a welcome breath of fresh air at the summertime box office.

______

THE WAY, WAY BACK
4 stars, out of 5

Snapshot: A dramatic comedy about an awkward teen who, forced to spend his summer vacation at the beach with his mother and her self-absorbed boyfriend, finds friendship in an unlikely place.

What works: In addition to being well-cast, it is well-written, managing to be breezy and emotionally rewarding at the same time.

What doesn't: The central theme -- awkward kid trying to find his way -- is hardly a fresh one.

Cast: Liam James, Steve Carell, Sam Rockwell, Toni Collette, Allison Janney, AnnaSohpia Robb, Maya Rudolph, Rob Corddry, Amanda Peet. Directors: Nat Faxon, Jim Rash. Rating: PG-13, for thematic elements, language, some sexual content and brief drug material. Running time: 1 hour 43 minutes. Where: Find New Orleans showtimes.

Developing a Strong Business Brand - Branding

Unless you unbiased don?t have an appetite for fried chicken, or you?ve been living in recluse for the past few decades, the phrase ?We do chicken moral? should immediately conjure up the fast-food restaurant, Kentucky Fried Chicken. The reason you wouldn?t consider of Popeye?s, Church?s or Zaxby?s is because that simple tiny tagline helped to build the KFC mark.

As an entrepreneur, it is valuable that you pay attention to branding as you get your business, preferably as a start-up. Your effect says a lot about you and your business. It is mighty more than your logo, business cards and stationary. Creating a strong stamp can benefit spot you apart from the competition and lay the accurate foundation for the future growth of your business.

In this article we peep how to execute a strong label. What is branding? Although your logo, graphics and tagline are all a share of your label, the most notable aspect of branding relates to the customer experience associated with the trace. There must be a value-added connection, whether realistic or perceived. When a business delivers on that label it creates a bond of trust, thereby making itself memorable and recognizable. I might be dating myself, but I remember when KFC tried to enter into the business of selling ribs. That didn?t go over very well in the USA!

The questions to hold in mind when developing your label are:

1) Who are I (me and my business)?

2) Why should someone do business with me?

3) How am I different from my competition?

Your mark should consistently communicate what your company does, along with the obvious images, attributes and personality. In developing my notice for Life Treasures LLC, my strategy centered around my mission statement. My goal is to support people gawk the legal value they absorb within (gifts, talents and abilities), passion and calling, and to inspire them to unleash their potential. Out of my mission statement came the business name, products & services, logo and tagline. My tag is also an image of who I am and what I?ve discovered about myself. That authenticity is what I want to inform to my clients in building thriving, value-added relationships now and going forward.

What is your business trace and what does it say about you? Draft the essence of your notice using these points:

· trace Purpose ? a snapshot of what you provide to your target market.

· label Differentiation ? things clear about you that your competitors can?t copy.

· label Personality ? a collection of human-like traits and adjectives that represent your impress.

· effect Promise -the confident expectation you give people to sigh on your purpose.

Creating a strong business price will accomplish your marketing more effective and efficient. Rather than trying to advance up with a different marketing conception for each product or service you provide, your product marketing strategy will be tailored to your business imprint. You won?t be confronted with a conflict of having an image of ribs with a tagline, ?We do chicken correct!?

Former brokers in UK court on Libor fraud charges

By Tommy Wilkes

LONDON (Reuters) - Two former brokers, who appeared in court on Friday on fraud charges, conspired with employees at UBS, HSBC , Rabobank, Citi and Tullett Prebon to manipulate Libor rates, UK prosecutors alleged in court documents.

Terry Farr, 41, and 48-year old James Gilmour, former staff at UK interbroker dealer RP Martin, are accused of conspiracy to defraud along with former Citi and UBS trader Tom Hayes.

The two men, arrested last December alongside Hayes, are the first brokers to face criminal action in connection with a global investigation into the Libor interest rate rigging scandal.

A central cog in the world financial system, the London interbank offered rate (Libor) is used as a price reference for hundreds of trillions of dollars worth of contracts, ranging from complex derivatives to everyday credit card bills.

The scandal has sparked public and political outrage and laid bare the failure of authorities and bank bosses to spot the manipulation.

So far, regulators have fined Britain's Barclays , Switzerland's UBS and Royal Bank of Scotland a total of $2.6 billion and prosecutors have charged four men.

Hayes, Gilmour and Farr are the first to face court. The fourth suspect, Roger Darin, was charged by U.S. prosecutors last December. He is currently in Switzerland.

The case against the two men, who both live in the southeastern English county of Essex, will increase scrutiny of the role played in the scandal by interdealer brokers, who act as middlemen between the buyers and sellers of financial securities such as bonds, currencies or interest rate swaps.

Farr, dressed in a dark suit and tie, and Gilmour, dressed in an open neck white shirt, sat in the dock in London's Westminster Magistrates Court and spoke only to confirm their names and addresses and their bail conditions.

The two were granted bail until July 30, when their case will be transferred for a hearing to the higher Southwark Crown Court. They were told not to contact each other or Hayes, and they gave no indication of how they would plead.

Citi and UBS declined to comment. HSBC, Tullett Prebon and Rabobank did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Employers won't pay more to maintain workers' comp insurance ...

The purpose of workers' compensation laws is to ensure that employees who are injured on the job receive compensation for their injuries without having to litigate with their employers. Every business is required to carry some form of workers' compensation. The Rhode Island Department of Labor and Training is helping to ensure that businesses carry workers' compensation insurance by refusing to add additional costs for businesses in maintaining insurance on their employees.

According to the department, the rate for workers' compensation insurers has remained at 6.75 percent since 2008,and it is mirroring the state governor's efforts at making Rhode Island a more employer-friendly environment. The Department's yearly assessment is used to fund the operations of the workers' compensation court, workers' compensation education unit, workers' compensation fraud unit, the advisory council and other costs of Rhode Island's workers' compensation program.

Rhode Island residents should be aware that workers' compensation is usually a substitute for a civil suit against the employer. This gives employees the benefit of workers' comp while protecting the employer from many lawsuits.

Someone may file a workers' compensation claim for a work related injury that aggravates a preexisting condition or causes a disease such as lung cancer. Someone injured on the job may also be able to recover for injuries that result from mental and physical strain caused by work related stress. Someone who develops a disabling mental condition due to harassment by a supervisor or because of job demands may also be entitled to compensation. An injured employee may also recover for injuries that occur during lunch hours, breaks or work related activities.

We're Still Crying Over The Red Wedding

SAN DIEGO ? It's wasn't hard for "Game of Thrones" to say goodbye to several characters at Comic-Con.

The panel for the fantasy HBO series kicked off Friday with an "in memoriam" segment set to Boyz II Men's "It's So Hard to Say Goodbye to Yesterday."

The tribute was dedicated to the scads of characters who've bitten the dust on the show, ranging from Khal Drogo to Wine Merchant to Catelyn Stark, the character played by Michelle Fairley who died in the infamous "Red Wedding" installment.

"I knew how many years I signed for, so I knew what was coming," said Fairley at the pop-culture convention.

The vicious slayings of many Westeros residents in the third season surprised many viewers, especially the brutal "Red Wedding" episode.

"We'd been waiting for it for so long and dreading it, and having it turn out better than we expected because of these actors was one of the greatest moments of my life," series co-creator David Benioff said.

"Game of Thrones" cast members Fairley, Peter Dinklage, John Bradley, Kit Harrington, Rose Leslie, Richard Madden and Emilia Clarke joined "A Song of Fire and Ice" mastermind George R.R. Martin and series co-creators Benioff and D.B. Weiss.

Martin said he needed to get to work finishing the two upcoming novels, "The Winds of Winter" and "A Dream of Spring," because the show is catching up with source material.

The crowd inside Hall H in the San Diego Convention Center shrieked when Khal Drago actor Jason Momoa stomped on stage and planted a smooch on Clarke, who continues to play his love interest Daenerys Targaryen, the Mother of Dragons, on the show.

Momoa screamed into the microphone, "I'm not dead, George!"

Joe Dirt, Anthony Pettis and more: Where did they fall on Cagewriter?s Hot or Not List?

Happy Friday, Cagereaders. Let's take a look at who has had a good week and who hasn't.

Hot -- Joe Dirt, apparently: UFC president Dana White was hanging out with actor David Spade and UFC women's bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey on Thursday night. White is a big fan of "Meet Joe Dirt" and Spade, and he will not hear otherwise.

Not -- UFC 163: The Brazilian event headlined by Jose Aldo's championship bout with Chan Sung Jung was hit with injury again. Clint Hester, from the latest season of "The Ultimate Fighter," pulled out of his bout with Cezar Ferreira because of a rib injury. Phil Harris is out because of a broken orbital bone. Robert Drysdale also had to pull out because of a staph infection. This is the same card Anthony Pettis had to pull out of. Speaking of ...

Hot -- Anthony Pettis: He wanted a title shot against Benson Henderson. Because of T.J. Grant's injury, Pettis is getting that title shot. Not only will he fight for the title, he will do it in his hometown of Milwaukee.

Hot -- Fighter bonuses: When some fighters complained about their pay, UFC president Dana White threatened to take fight night bonuses off the table. This week, he pulled back on the threat.

Still taking temperature -- Cagereaders: This is a rare weekend. There are no UFC, Bellator, World Series of Fighting or Invicta bouts this weekend. It's the summer. Go outside and enjoy it. If your part of the world is being hit by a heat wave, drink water and stay safe. We'll have plenty to talk about next week with UFC on Fox 8.

FIFA sets 2014 World Cup ticket prices in Brazil

SAO PAULO (AP) ? Fans will pay $90 for tickets to see World Cup matches in Brazil next year, $10 more than in 2010 in South Africa.

Announcing ticket rates Friday, FIFA said $15 seats will be available to Brazilian students, people over 60 and members of social programs. In 2010, South African residents could pay $20.

Host nation residents will have access to at least 400,000 discounted tickets from the publicly available total of about 3 million.

International fans will pay from $440 to $990, in three category bands, to see the final July 13 at the Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro.

FIFA said prices start at $220 for the opening match in Sao Paulo on June 12. Top category seats will cost $495.

At the other 47 group-stage matches, seats costs $90 in the cheapest Category 3 band. Category 1 tickets will cost $175.

Prices for international fans are about 10 percent more than four years ago in South Africa.

The concessions to Brazilians were stipulated in a so-called World Cup bill approved last year by the Brazilian Congress. Portions of the bill ? parts that grant FIFA certain tax concessions ? have been called unconstitutional and are being appealed to the country's supreme court.

"The ticketing strategy shows important achievements that Brazil has obtained, which were included in the World Cup law," Deputy Sports Minister Luis Fernandes said at the ticket announcement.

Despite the discounts, the prices are out of reach for most people in Brazil, where the average official minimum monthly salary is about $340.

Brazil will spend about $14 billion on next year's World Cup. The price tag was a focus of violent street protests that took place during the Confederation Cup last month, the warm-up event for the World Cup.

The protests have continued with complaints about poor schools, hospitals and public services contrasted with the lavish spending on the World Cup ? and an equal amount on the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

Tickets for the World Cup will be sold globally from Aug. 20 on fifa.com. The first sales phase ends Oct. 10, and a random draw will allocate seats for oversubscribed matches.

A second sales phase opens Dec. 8, after the 32-team draw is made and the match schedule confirmed. FIFA said buyers can request a maximum of four seats per match and a maximum of seven matches.

FIFA said an additional 450,000 tickets have been reserved for a corporate client program, which FIFA licensed to MATCH Hospitality for $120 million.

The total number of available tickets will not be finalized until the 12 stadiums are completed, FIFA said.

FIFA marketing director Thierry Weil called on Brazilian authorities to have all 12 World Cup stadiums ready by a Dec. 31 deadline set by FIFA. Four of the six stadiums used for the Confederations Cup were late being delivered, causing ticketing confusion with some fans entering with tickets ? only to find no corresponding seats, Weil said.

"We need the stadiums in time for the World Cup to be ready and to be prepared," he said.

He also said ticket pickup locations would be available at the airports in all 12 host cities.

Air travel will be the main way to get around the continent-size country. Many of Brazil's airports are outdated ? notably those in Rio and Sao Paulo ? with domestic connections expensive and difficult to make.

"For the World Cup, what we need to do is, we need to have ticket centers in the right locations," Weil said.

Update Galaxy Grand I9082 to Official Jelly Bean 4.2.2 XXUBMF2 OS

Even though the official Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean OTA update isn?t yet available for the Samsung Galaxy Grand I9082, a leaked version of the firmware has been provided. So, if you want to test the stock JB 4.2.2 OS on your Galaxy Grand before the official release, then flash the XXUBMF2 software on your smartphone. By using this tutorial you will learn how to manually install the leaked firmware on your phone, so you will still get the official Android OS, not a custom ROM based on the same.

Since you will update your Galaxy Grand with the official, though just leaked, Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean software, you will not have to deal with a complex flashing operation. That?s why, for this step by step guide a rooted device isn?t required. The steps from below are compatible with both rooted and un-rooted smartphones, so you have nothing to worry about. Of course, if your Grand has been unchained or installed with a custom ROM, now by updating to stock JB 4.2.2 XXUBMF2 OS you will revoke the root access, restore the warranty and re-flash the default variant of the Android system.

The new Jelly Bean 4.2.2 firmware comes with new features, apps, capabilities and bug fixes, the XXUBMF2 software being stable and smoothly running on the Samsung Galaxy Grand model number I9082. The same OS will be official released and rolled out by Samsung for your Grand during the upcoming days ? or weeks if you are unlucky, so by completing this tutorial you will be with one step ahead Samsung and Google.

For safely completing this update operation you will use Odin which is an official tool developed and offered by Samsung. The app is being used for updating and rooting procedures, so your phone will be safe. But in order to avoid the unpleasant situations, before heading to the steps from below, complete the pre requisites.

  • Use a Windows running computer because Odin can be installed only on the same.
  • Ensure that your phone?s USB cable is near you as you will have to connect your device with the computer.
  • On the computer the Galaxy Grand drivers must be installed. You can use Samsung KIES for flashing the drivers.
  • On your computer there shouldn?t be any security tools installed; deactivate the security protection if you want to successfully complete this guide.
  • Enable the USB debugging option on your handset for being able to connect your device with the PC; for USB debugging go to: ?Settings -> Applications -> Development -> USB debugging?.
  • If on your phone you notice that there is less than 60% power left, it is recommended to plug in the charger before heading to the update operation.

Also, as a recommendation, a backup should be applied. In case, during the update operation, Odin gets stuck, or if your Galaxy Grand will get stuck in a boot loop, you will have to wipe the system. Therefore, for saving your data, personal info and accounts, choose to backup the Grand data first.

Finally, you are prepared to start the flashing procedure. Just make sure that you are applying the official Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean XXUBMF2 firmware on the Samsung Galaxy Grand model number I9082 because the present step by step guide is compatible only with the mentioned smartphone.

  1. Remember to install the Galaxy Grand drivers on the computer.
  2. On the same computer download and install Odin.
  3. Furthermore, from here download the update package.
  4. Unzip the firmware file and run Odin on your computer.
  5. Now, turn off your handset.
  6. Reboot it in download mode.
  7. The Galaxy Grand can be rebooted in download mode by: pressing and holding at the same time the Power, Volume Down and Home buttons.
  8. With the phone in download mode, use the USB cable and connect the device with your computer.
  9. Then, on Odin you should notice: the ?added? message displayed and the ID:COM section that should be yellow or blue.
  10. If not, it means Odin didn?t recognize your Galaxy Grand, so you should reinstall the drivers on your computer once more.
  11. From Odin select ?PDA? and pick the software file.
  12. Then, click on ?start? without making any other changes on Odin ? the re-partition section should remain unchecked.
  13. When the update process will be completed on Odin you will see the ?pass? message displayed.
  14. You should unplug the USB cable and reboot your handset.

Troubleshooting

First, Odin might get stuck while you are triyng to apply the ROM; in that case:

  • Close Odin.
  • Disconnect the devices.
  • Force-restart your smartphone.
  • Reinstall the drivers on your computer.
  • Run Odin.
  • Reboot your phone in download mode and connect it with the computer.
  • Follow the update operation from above.

Then, your Galaxy Grand might get stuck in a boot loop; you can resolve this problem by following:

  • Reboot your phone in recovery mode.
  • For recovery mode: press and hold Volume Up, Power and Home buttons at the same time.
  • From recovery select ?wipe data factory reset? and ?wipe cache partition?.
  • Return to recovery (select ?+++go back+++?) and select ?reboot system now?.

For any other problem check this step by step guide ? you will be able to learn how to resolve the most common Android issues.

Congratulations you have updated your Samsung Galaxy Grand smartphone with the leaked and official Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean XXUBMF2 firmware. Test the software and share your impressions and experience with our team and with other users who might want to use our tutorial.

NCAA to stop putting name, logo on video game

NEW YORK (AP) ? The NCAA said Wednesday it won't allow Electronic Arts Inc. to use its logo and name in video games while it fights a lawsuit that says the governing body owes billions of dollars to former players for allowing their likenesses to be used for free.

The NCAA said it won't enter into a new contract with EA Sports beyond the current one that expires June 2014. That means NCAA Football 2014 will be the last edition of the popular game. However, it won't necessarily stop EA Sports from producing a college football video game depicting powerhouse schools such as Alabama, Ohio State and Oregon.

"Member colleges and universities license their own trademarks and other intellectual property for the video game," the NCAA said in a statement. "They will have to independently decide whether to continue those business arrangements in the future."

The NCAA is in the midst of a long legal battle that started with a lawsuit filed by former UCLA basketball star Ed O'Bannon.

The suit has expanded to include several former athletes who claim the NCAA and EA Sports have used their names and likenesses without compensation and demand the NCAA find a way to give players a cut of the billions of dollars earned from live broadcasts, memorabilia sales and video games.

"We are confident in our legal position regarding the use of our trademarks in video games," the NCAA said. "But given the current business climate and costs of litigation, we determined participating in this game is not in the best interests of the NCAA.

Re my previous topic here, "How can I find out what my Computer is doing", I bought a registry cleaner, PC Tuneup by Comodo, now I find it has not only failed to fix about 273 of the 290 problems it claimed my computer has, but it has also removed my Taskbar and startup menu on Windows XP, all it does is load a "my Documents"box instead from which I have to access everything.

Anybody know how I can restore my Taskbar?
System restore didnt get it back, the taskbar icon wont open up in control panel.

Win key, and R, type in "explorer.exe" and hit enter. Should fix it.

"Win key" is that the key next to Ctrl with a circular depression and a Window Icon on it?

I tried pressing that and R at the same time, tried one after the other, tried the other win key, nothing happens?

Apple to probe death of woman who used iPhone while it was charging

SINGAPORE - Apple (AAPL) is investigating an accident in which a Chinese woman was killed by an electric shock when answering a call on her iPhone 5 while it was charging, the U.S. technology company said Monday.

Last Thursday, Ma Ailun, a 23-year-old woman from China's western Xinjiang region and a flight attendant with China Southern Airlines, was electrocuted when she took a call on the charging mobile telephone, the official Xinhua news agency quoted police as saying on Sunday.

"We are deeply saddened to learn of this tragic incident and offer our condolences to the Ma family. We will fully investigate and cooperate with authorities in this matter," Apple said in an e-mail.

Apple declined to comment on details, such as whether this was an isolated case.

Ma's sister tweeted on Sina's microblog saying that Ma collapsed and died after using her charging iPhone 5 and urged users to be careful, a message that went viral on the site.

In April, Apple apologized to Chinese consumers and altered iPhone warranty policies in its second-biggest market after its after-sales service suffered more more than two weeks of condemnation by the state-run media.

Weidner Center to announce 2013-14 Performing Arts Season ...

Posted in:? News, Press Releases
Posted by: Kelly McBride ?|? July 15, 2013 ?-? 9:19 am

The Weidner Center for the Performing Arts at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay will announce its 2013-14 Performing Arts Season lineup during a special event for patrons, friends and the campus community at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 17 on the Weidner Center mainstage.

The 21-show, 24-performance season is described as offering a wide variety of titles designed to appeal to audiences of all kinds. Weidner officials responsible for programing the series ? which includes Broadway, comedy, dance, family entertainment and more ? say they expect the lineup to appeal to longtime Weidner audiences and less familiar newcomers alike. The season?s first title has been announced, with comedienne, author and Emmy winner Kathy Griffin set to present ?An Evening with Kathy Griffin? at 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 12.

?We are thrilled to announce the 2013-14 Performing Arts Season, a lineup of shows that builds upon the success of the first year of our five-year revitalization plan,? said Weidner Center Executive Director Kate Green. ?Once again, this season offers something for everyone, including wildly popular touring productions and the finest in Broadway, comedy, music and more. Community input remains paramount in all we do, and this season reflects that. We?re so excited to share it, and to prepare for another terrific year.?

The lineup announcement comes on the heels of a successful inaugural season of UW-Green Bay?s five-year Strategic Plan to reinvigorate its signature performing arts venue. UW-Green Bay Chancellor Tom Harden in late 2011 outlined tentative budgetary and staffing structures for the Weidner Center, part of a comprehensive plan for the venue?s future. That plan has four primary goals: enhancing the Weidner?s Performing Arts Series (traditionally referred to as ?mainstage? programming); increasing access to the venue for faculty, staff and students; providing more opportunities for various community groups; and continuing an emphasis on K-12 educational programing. The Weidner in May announced its 2013-14 Stage Doors Education Series, a collection of 10 titles and 19 performances that provide learning opportunities for students throughout Wisconsin and Upper Michigan.

Building on the success of a successful 2013-14 Performing Arts Season that included 16 shows and 18 performances, the Weidner has continued to build pathways for its future. In August 2012, Kate Green was named executive director of the Weidner Center, following a nationwide search. Part of an identified priority to increase staffing levels, the position was restored after being shelved in 2005, when UW-Green Bay stepped back from being the venue?s primary programmer. The Weidner Center currently is conducting a nationwide search for a director of marketing, a crucial position that will help bolster revitalization efforts as the Strategic Plan continues to move forward.

UW-Green Bay worked with an outside consultant and numerous stakeholder groups to establish a sustainable plan for the Weidner Center?s future. Individuals from those groups will be among those in attendance during the July 17 season lineup announcement, for which invitations were sent earlier this spring. Members of the news media are invited to attend and cover the event. A news embargo on the lineup will be lifted as soon as it is announced during the event, and the full schedule will be posted online at www.WeidnerCenter.com by 7 p.m.

The Weidner Center for the Performing Arts, located near the center of UW-Green Bay?s bayshore campus on the northeast side of the city of Green Bay, is known for its elegant design and the acoustic excellence of its 2,000-seat main hall, Cofrin Family Hall. It also houses two smaller performance spaces, the Fort Howard recital hall and the Jean Weidner Theatre, along with a dance studio and grand foyer. The center is a home for UW-Green Bay music and theatre productions, the Green Bay Symphony, community events and productions, and performances by visiting artists and touring companies.

For more information on the Weidner Center, visit www.WeidnerCenter.com, call 800-895-0071 or 920-465-2726, or follow the venue on Facebook (www.facebook.com/pages/Weidner-Center-for-the-Performing-Arts/15015305278) and Twitter (@WeidnerCenter).

OS X Mavericks Preview: OS X Server - friend to Macs, iOS devices

OS X Mavericks Preview: OS X Server is a friend to Macs, iOS devices

In all that's been written or said about OS X Mavericks, precious few words have been saved for OS X Server, which, of course, is getting the Mavericks treatment too. Let's take a look at some of the enhancements coming to OS X Server when Mavericks bows this fall.

OS X Server, using the same underpinnings as OS X, provides server-strength file sharing capabilities, database publication (including contact and calendar functionality), live video streaming, e-mail service, wiki and Web site publication, iOS device management, and more. It includes powerful open source software like Python, a popular scripting language, PostgreSQL for Structured Query Language (SQL) database support, and Apache, a popular open-source web server.

Apple's senior vice president of Software Engineering, Craig Federighi, offered nary a word about OS X Server during his keynote presentation introducing Mavericks at Apple's Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) in San Francisco last month. Should you infer from that a disinterest in server software coming from Apple's senior management? No. In fact, the opposite is true. They're very interested in seeing OS X Server do well, because it's crucial to the entire Apple ecosystem.

Working hand-in-hand with OS X on desktop and laptop Macs

The history of Macs as servers is almost as long as the Mac itself. Apple has sold server products for years - even in the pre-OS X "Classic" Mac OS days. Up until fairly recently, however, OS X Server remained the rarified domain of corporate IT departments. In January, 2011 Apple discontinued its rack-mountable server product, the Xserve, and IT jocks (and analysts) panicked - it seemed like Apple was pulling up stakes out of the enterprise space all together.

How wrong we were.

Turns out the Mac mini has had smashing success as a server, for the lucrative Small to Medium Business (SMB) market and also as a workgroup server for small to medium-sized groups of employees in corporate environments. The diminutive laptop is available in a server-specific configuration with two internal 1TB hard disk drives for $999. But you can install OS X Server on any Mac you might have lying around that's running up-to-date operating system software.

That's because Apple also radically changed the way it sold OS X Server.

As recently as Apple's release of Snow Leopard, Mac OS X v10.6, the company sold Snow Leopard Server separately from the "regular" operating system. $499 netted you a single server installation with support for unlimited users.

An incredible value

Now OS X Server is actually included with the regular operating system. You can buy a server management application for $19.99 as a download through the Mac App Store.

That's not changing with OS X Mavericks - you'll still be able to buy a separate management app through the Mac App Store. Apple continues to build the core capabilities into the regular consumer operating system.

Here's what Apple has to say about OS X Server in Mavericks:

OS X Server includes a number of innovations that will help the people who use your network as well as the people who manage it. The new features in Xcode Server make it easier than ever for a Mac or iOS development team to create robust, reliable software, thanks to continuous integration, testing, and repository hosting services. Caching Server 2 speeds up the download and delivery of software through the App Store, Mac App Store, and iTunes Store, and it can now cache on your server for faster downloading to iOS 7 devices. And Profile Manager has an array of new management features for iOS 7 and OS X Mavericks that simplify software distribution of apps and books.

A friend to iOS devices as well

In other words, OS X Server in Mavericks is pretty much going to be a continuation of what we've seen - enhancements, rather than a major upheaval, designed to facilitate better workgroup communication in areas where OS X Server is really useful - teams of programmers working together on projects in Xcode, Apple's development environment for OS X and iOS applications alike, for example. Or businesses that are leveraging iOS devices like the iPhone and iPad among their employees, whether it's standard-issue policy or Bring Your Own Device (BYOD). Caching Server 2 promises to reduce wasted employee time by hastening the speed at which OS X Server will download content from iTunes, the Mac App Store or the App Store for iOS.

But don't think OS X Server is only good for Macs, iPads and iPhones. It's built on the same open standards and proven technology as the rest of OS X. It is OS X. It's a good corporate citizen that plays well with Windows PCs, Linux boxes and other various and sundry computing devices, too.

Some pundits and analysts erroneously think that Apple doesn't care about the enterprise space - those blowhards don't see Apple selling server hardware to compete with Dell, IBM and other companies, and assume the company is MIA. Nothing is further from the truth - Apple's been here all along. It's just that they have a very different handle on the market than most of the other companies in enterprise computing do. $20 gets you everything you need to get OS X Server off the ground. Compare that with the costs of server racks and blade systems and specialized server software used in other venues. It's a remarkable difference.

Are you in IT? Do you depend on OS X Server either as a user or an administrator? Or is this all rubbish that you don't care about? Talk to me in the comments, please, I'd love to hear from you. And please follow these links to find out more about OS X Mavericks or to have a conversation with other users about what features you're looking forward to most.

Acer Aspire P3-171-6820

The Acer Aspire P3-171-6820 is a cleverly designed hybrid/convertible tablet featuring a ten-point touch-screen, an ultra-low voltage Core i5 processor, a Bluetooth keyboard case, and a 120GB solid state drive. The keyboard comes in handy for those times when only a keyboard will do, but it doesn't do a very good job of supporting the tablet and it doesn't have a touchpad. Priced at just under $900 (list) it is relatively affordable as far as hybrid go, but it can't match the performance of similarly priced hybrids, including our current Editors' Choice, the Microsoft Surface Windows 8 Pro.

Design and Features
The P3-171-6820 is wrapped in a sleek brushed silver aluminum chassis that weighs 1.7 pounds and measures 11.6-by-7.5 -by-0.04 inches (HWD). A micro-HDMI port and a full-size USB 3.0 port share space on the left side of the tablet with a microphone, rest button, and the power jack. On the right side are a headphone/speaker jack, the power button, a battery status indicator, and a volume key. There are two air vents on the top, a rear-facing five-megapixel camera on the back, and a 720p HD camera embedded at the top of the screen.

There are two small speakers embedded in the bottom of the tablet. Combined with Dolby Home Theater software they deliver a much bigger sound than their size would indicate, although bass response is non-existent. Missing is a card reader slot.

The 11.6-inch glossy screen has a maximum resolution of 1,366-by-768, which is disappointing as it can't display video in full (1080p) high-definition like the Microsoft Surface Pro and the Samsung ATIV SmartPC Pro 700T (XE700T1C-A01US). However, it does a good job with 720p content, delivering rich colors, sharp imagery, and good viewing angles. The screen uses 10-point touch technology, which provides effortless and accurate swiping, gesturing, pinching, and zooming.

Unlike the Sony VAIO Duo 11 (D11213CX) and Samsung 700T, the Aspire P3's keyboard is detached and stays that way as it uses Bluetooth technology to communicate with the tablet. Simply snap the tablet into the keyboard case, press the power button on the upper part of the keyboard deck, slide the screen into the groove above the keyboard, and you're ready to type. Be careful, though; the tablet doesn't sit very snug in the groove and can be knocked loose with slight pressure to the top of the screen.

Typing is relatively comfortable but those with big hands may feel a bit cramped. There's no room for a touchpad here either, but there is a mini-USB port on the upper left side. The black textured keyboard case adds 0.78-inch to the P3-171-6820's overall thickness and 1.32-pounds to the overall weight.

The 120GB drive comes loaded with Windows 8 and the usual assortment of apps including Skype, Amazon Kindle, Netflix, and trail versions of MS Office and McAfee Internet Security Suite. There's also eShopping, eReading, and iCookbook programs, as well as Acer Cloud and Nero Backitup software.

Rounding out the feature set are Wi-Fi a/b/g/n and Bluetooth 4.0 radios, a mini-USB to full-sized USB adapter (for use with the keyboard), and a micro-HDMI to VGA video dongle. Acer covers the P3 with a standard one-year warranty.

Performance
Acer Aspire P3-171-6820 The Aspire P3 is powered by a 1.5GHz Intel Core i5-3339Y processor, 4 GBs of memory, and Intel's integrated HD Graphics 4000 GPU. It's score of 3,750 trailed the Surface Pro (4,768) by more than 1,000 points and the Samsung SmartPC Pro 700T by around 700 points. The P3 came in last on our Cinebench R11.5 CPU test with a score of 1.80 while the Surface Pro scored a 2.39.

Acer Aspire P3-171-6820

Multimedia performance was similar; the Aspire P3's Photoshop (8:25) and Handbrake (2:01) encoding times were significantly longer than the Microsoft Surface Pro (6:11 and 1:28, respectively), while the Core i7-fueled Asus Transformer Book TX300C led the pack.

Most tablets come up short when it comes to gaming and the Aspire P3 is no different. It managed a paltry 8 fps on our medium quality Alien vs. Predator test and 7 fps on our medium quality Heaven benchmark test. On the plus side, video played smoothly without any sign of chop or stutter.

The Aspire P3's 4-cell lithium-ion battery lasted 5 hours 11 minutes on our battery rundown test. That's right up there with the Samsung ATIV Smart PC Pro (5:12) and a bit longer than the Dell XPS 12 (5:09), the Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga 13 (5:00), and Microsoft Surface Pro (4:58). The Asus TX300C held onto its lead with a battery time of 7:35, but it needed two batteries to do so. Without the help of the secondary keyboard case battery, the Transformer Book lasted 4:47.

With the Acer Aspire P3-171-6820 you get a tablet and an Ultrabook in one slim, affordable package. Its 10-point touch-screen is ideal for swiping your way through Windows 8 apps, and you'll never have to worry about reattaching the Bluetooth keyboard (but you may want to take care not to knock the tablet off its perch while typing). Its battery provided over five hours of unplugged computing power, but when it came to performance, it couldn't keep pace with the competition. If you can spare an extra $100, the Editors' Choice Microsoft Surface Windows 8 Pro offers better performance as well as a 1,920-by-1,080 screen, a digitizer pen, an SDXC card reader, and a slightly bigger solid-state drive.
