Giant cockroach genus Pseudophoraspis expands to the north with 3 new species

Feb. 28, 2013 ? Cockroaches (Blattodea) are an insect order remarkable in their biodiversity and distribution, with more than 4500 species known and great geographical reach. Cockroach fossils date back around 400 million years, which testifies to their great adaptability and endurance that puts them among the planet's great survivors.

The cockroach genus Pseudophoraspism has has been reported from China for the first time thanks to the discovery of three new species: Pseudophoraspis clavellata, Pseudophoraspis recurvata and Pseudophoraspis incurvata, alongside the first regional record of three already described ones. They belong to the cockroach family Blaberidae, known also as giant cockroaches. The study was published in the open access journal ZooKeys.

Although the adults of the newly described species can reach a size of around 3 cm in length, they are still some of the smallest representatives in the family. For comparison, the females of the largest species known, Blaberus giganteus, can reach up to 10 cm in length. The heaviest species, Macropanesthia rhinoceros, also known as the rhinoceros cockroach, reaches only around 8 cm but can weigh remarkable 35 grams.

All of the known species of the genus Pseudophoraspis, to which the three newly described ones belong, were reported from Southeast Asia and South Asia, with Vietnam considered the north boundary of their territory. This new record of three already known species, and three newly discovered ones in China's provinces Hainan, Yunnan and Guangxi, however, considerably expands the reach of the genus to the North.

One of the authors, Dr. Zongqing Wang from the Institute of Entomology, Southwest University, China comments: "All of the known species were reported from Southeast Asia and South Asia, and the previously known boundary of this genus would be Vietnam. We found three new species from China, located in Hainan, Yunnan and Guangxi Provinces respectively, which extends the range of the genus Pseudophoraspis northward."

(AP) ? The quiet of this seaside community erupted in violence Tuesday when two detectives investigating a sex crime were fatally shot while trying to question a man who was later killed in a police shootout, leaving the chief to call it the darkest day in the department's history.

Sgt. Loren Butch Baker and detective Elizabeth Butler were shot and killed during an altercation at the home of the coffee shop worker, according to police and the Santa Cruz County Sheriff's office.

They were shot while following up on allegations that barista Jeremy Goulet, 35, made inappropriate sexual advances on a co-worker at her home, authorities said. Goulet was arrested Friday and was fired the next day, The Santa Cruz Sentinel reported.

Baker, a 28-year veteran of the force, and Butler, a 10-year veteran, had gone to the house where Goulet was living to follow up on the case, authorities said. They were subsequently fired upon and called for backup, and responding officers found Goulet, who was killed in the gunfire that followed, the sheriff's office said.

"There aren't words to describe this horrific tragedy," said Police Chief Kevin Vogel. "This is the darkest day in the history of the Santa Cruz police department."

The shootings prompted the lockdown of two schools and an automatic police call to nearby residents, warning them to stay locked inside. The ordinarily quiet residential neighborhood echoed with a brief barrage of gunfire that killed the suspect about a half hour after the officers were shot.

A store clerk a few buildings from the shooting said the shootout was "terrifying."

"We ducked. We have big desks so under the desks we went," said the clerk, who spoke on condition of anonymity and asked that her store not be identified because she feared for her safety.

After the shootings, police went door-to-door in the neighborhood, searching homes, garages, even closets, to determine whether there might be additional suspects. Law enforcement officers filled intersections, and helicopters and light aircraft patrolled the neighborhood about a mile from downtown Santa Cruz and the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk.

The city's mayor, Hilary Bryant, said in a statement that the community about 60 miles south of San Francisco was "heartbroken at the loss of two of our finest police officers who were killed in the line of duty, protecting the community we love."

"This is an exceptionally shocking and sad day for Santa Cruz and our police department," Bryant said.

Goulet, a barista at a coffee shop in the Santa Cruz harbor, was previously convicted in Portland, Ore., in May 2008 of peeping on a 22-year-old woman who was showering in her condominium and of carrying concealed weapon, according to a Portland newspaper, The Oregonian. He was on probation but was sentenced to two years in jail after a dispute with his probation officer.

The shootings came amid a recent spike in assaults, which community leaders had planned to address in a downtown rally scheduled for Tuesday. That, along with a City Council meeting, was canceled after teary-eyed city leaders learned of the deaths.

The recent violence included the killing of a 32-year-old martial arts instructor who was shot outside a popular downtown bar and restaurant; the robbery of a student at the University of California, Santa Cruz, who was shot in the head; a 21-year-old woman who was raped and beaten on the UC campus; and a couple who fought off two men during a home invasion.

Pirate Bay abandons Sweden for Norway and Spain after legal ...

The Swedish Pirate Party has handed over hosting of the Pirate Bay to sister parties in Norway and Spain after the country?s copyright lobby sent a letter threatening criminal charges for hosting the controversial file-sharing website.

The Swedish Rights Alliance gave the party until Tuesday to cut all ties with the Pirate Bay following threats of serious legal consequences. In a letter sent directly to the party's board members earlier this month, the Swedish Pirate Party was accused of violating copyright law by acting as an Internet service provider for the popular bittorrent site.

The alliance also charged that the Supreme Court of Sweden had ?legally settled that not only those who operate an illegal file-sharing service, but also those who provide internet access to such an illegal service are committing a criminal act.?

The Rights Alliance said that such violations of copyright law could entail stiff fines for noncompliance, payment of damages and even potential prison terms. ?These rules apply to legal entities, including non-profit organizations such as The Pirate Party and Serious Tubes, their board members, and other representatives of the organizations,? the letter continued.

The Pirate Bay?s decision to move its web-hosting services to Norway and Spain likely stems from legal precedents indicating more favorable climates for file-sharing sites.

In 2010, the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) and several movie studios were unable to force a Norwegian ISP to block the Pirate Bay. Spanish courts have so far failed to react to dozens of site closure requests from rightsholders, and threats from the United States that Spain will be put on a trade blacklist.

Swedish Pirate Party Leader Anna Troberg hailed the shift as a positive sign that despite legal pressure at home, the movement is continuing to become an international platform for reforming copyright laws and patents.

?Today, there are more than sixty different Pirate Parties all around the world. Every cut connection to The Pirate Bay will generate two new connections,? Torrent Freak quoted her as saying.

She further said that to take the Rights Alliance on at this time would not be prudent, despite the tenuous legal claims leveled at the Pirate Party.

?It would be crazy to enter a game where the rules are decided by the other team,? she said. ?The Pirate Party?s mission is not to produce martyrs for the copyright industry. Our mission is to create longterm political change that ensures that the copyright industry in the future will not be allowed to threaten companies, organizations and individuals into silence with our common judicial system as a weapon.?

Rick Falkvinge, the Pirate Party founder and a self-described evangelist of sensible information policy, told RT that Swedish courts have displayed ?remarkable and remorseless corruption when it comes to copyright monopoly cases in general, and The Pirate Bay cases in particular.?

?Being in the moral and legal right is something completely different from winning in a courtroom,? he said. ?In the trial against the Pirate Bay operators, you saw everything from a corrupt judge who was part of the same interest group as the plaintiffs to an investigating police officer who was flat-out hired by Warner Brothers while doing the investigation.?

"It was a travesty of everything justice is supposed to be,? Falkvinge added.

Parties may struggle to form government in Italy

Democratic Party leader Pierluigi Bersani leaves after a press conference in Rome, Tuesday Feb. 26, 2013. Italy emerged from elections Tuesday with no clear winner, driving markets around the world markedly lower as investors worried that one of Europe's biggest economies would be unable to build a governing coalition that can stay the course on unpopular austerity measures. (AP) ? A center-left group of parties appears to have the best shot at forming a coalition government in Italy after an inconclusive national election, but the challenge is steep and comes amid public anger over austerity measures.

If Italian parties fail to form a governing coalition, new elections would be required, causing more uncertainty and a leadership vacuum, and that possibility has rattled financial markets across Europe.

Pier Luigi Bersani and his center-left allies appeared on Tuesday to have won a narrow victory in the lower house of parliament, while the Senate looks split with no party in control. Silvio Berlusconi, the former Italian premier whose center-right coalition did better than expected, is a key player since his coalition is now the second-biggest bloc in the upper chamber.

Comic-turned-political leader Beppe Grillo, whose 5 Star Movement capitalized on a wave of voter disgust with the ruling political class, had a surprisingly strong showing. His bloc of seats in Parliament could prove crucial in making any coalition government viable.

The two-day election on Sunday and Monday also was a clear rejection of the previous technocratic government led by Mario Monti. That government enacted wide-ranging reforms to the budget and the economy. Though its borrowing rates have fallen in financial markets, the cost to Italians has been high, with Italy mired in recession and unemployment on the rise.

Berlusconi has already ruled out an alliance with Monti, his predecessor, whom he blamed for driving Italy deeper into recession.

On Tuesday, a few seats in Parliament based on Italians' voting abroad still remained to be decided, but their numbers won't ease the gridlock. European leaders pleaded with politicians in Italy to quickly form a government to continue to enact reforms to lower Italy's critically high debt and spare Europe another spike in its four-year financial crisis.

Bersani said he was not opening talks with any potential partners until he submits his program to Italy's president, who taps a candidate to form a government.

Stinging from a loss of some 4 million votes compared to the last election in 2008, Bersani hasn't yet identified who he could try to form alliances with. But top officials in his Democratic Left (PD) party were quick to rule out any deal with Berlusconi.

"As far as I go, absolutely not," Stefano Fassina, a PD official, said of a possible Bersani-Berlusconi alliance.

Italy's FTSE MIB index closed trading Tuesday 4.89 percent lower at 15,731, having earlier been nearly 5 percent down. Some of its banking stocks were briefly suspended after precipitous falls at the bell.

Whether Tuesday's negative market reaction extends further into the week may hinge on how quickly a solution is reached in Italy.

Berlusconi insisted that a government can be formed and called on Italians to ignore the "crazy" markets.

"Markets go their own way. They are independent and also a little crazy," Berlusconi said, adding that a government can be cobbled together, if rival politicians are willing to "make some sacrifices."

Grillo said his forces would seek to thwart any Bersani-Berlusconi deal. Raising the specter of early elections, he predicted any such coalition will "last seven, eight months. The economy won't let them escape."

Bersani himself later made subtle overture toward Grillo's forces, conceding that the center-left campaign had not gone deep enough for change. "We finished first, without winning," he conceded.

Italy is hugely important for the future of the euro, and its apparent stability over the past six months has been one of the reasons that concerns over the currency have eased. Of the 17 European Union countries that use the euro, Italy has the second-highest debt burden as a proportion of its gross domestic product, at 127 percent.

Only Greece's is higher. Italy has to spend around ?80 billion a year just to service its debt.

The worry across financial markets is that Italy's appetite for reform may wane and its debt situation may deteriorate.

Though Italy's annual borrowing ? its budget deficit ? is relatively small compared with other euro countries at 3 percent of its annual gross domestic product, its overall debt stands at a colossal ?2 trillion.

Samsung outs SAFE with Knox, details plans to secure the enterprise Galaxy handson

BlackBerry has Balance, and no more than a month after the company once known as Research in Motion debuted its first BB 10 handset, Samsung has a dual-workspace solution of its own: SAFE with Knox. Unlike SAFE, which stands for Samsung for Enterprise, Knox, which was named for the Army outpost where America stores much of its gold, was not crafted into an acronym (though we imagine marketers dedicated at least one meeting to the cause). It's appropriately named, given the company's plans to dominate the enterprise industry with what's soon to be "the most comprehensive mobile security solution."

So what will you find within the Fort Knox of the smartphone world? It's an IT manager's pipe dream, of sorts. A comprehensive collection of features that include Security Enhanced (SE) Android, secure boot, TrustZone-based Integrity Monitoring (TIMA) for protecting the kernel, Single Sign On (SSO) and that application container concept made famous by BlackBerry, just to name a few. Best of all, Knox will ship preinstalled on select devices, all sold as one SKU -- in other words, consumers and enterprise customers alike will be taking home identical handsets, simplifying the process significantly for BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) businesses. We'll explain in a bit more detail in our hands-on video after the break.

Kurdish militant leader signals Turkish prisoners may be freed

ISTANBUL (Reuters) - The jailed leader of Turkey's Kurdish rebellion on Saturday signaled that his followers could release captives and further a fledgling peace process that may be the best hope in years of ending the decades-long conflict.

The call by Abdullah Ocalan, the head of the autonomy-seeking Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), came after a rare meeting with members of parliament's only pro-Kurdish party at his prison on an island in the Sea of Marmara south of Istanbul.

It fell short of a new ceasefire declaration, which Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan would like to see to boost an initiative that includes state officials' negotiations with Ocalan and aims to end a war that has claimed 40,000 lives since 1984.

Reading a short statement by Ocalan, Pervin Buldan, a member of the Peace and Democracy Party (BDP) who visited Ocalan with two other lawmakers, said upon their return that the rebel leader would like to see captives held by the PKK freed.

"A historic process is under way. All sides should be very careful and sensitive," Buldan cited Ocalan as saying.

"The state and the PKK both have prisoners. The PKK should treat prisoners well, and I hope they return to their families."

Ocalan may be referring to both captured soldiers and government employees kidnapped by the PKK in recent years.

Thousands of militants and their suspected supporters are in jail, many of them awaiting verdicts in trials that last years.

Turkey, the United States and the European Union list the PKK as a terrorist group.

REBELS' WITHDRAWAL SOUGHT

Earlier, Erdogan reiterated that the PKK must leave Turkey.

"We have repeatedly said weapons should be given up and members of this terrorist organization withdraw from the country," Erdogan said at a news conference that was aired live.

"As for the withdrawal, we have said we will take measures to avoid the kind of unfortunate developments that occurred in the past," Erdogan said, possibly referring to military attacks on the PKK when they have declared ceasefires in the past.

The PKK says it keeps about half of its 7,000 fighters in Turkey and half in northern Iraq, where it maintains its main camps in remote, nearly impassable mountains.

Turkey estimates the number of rebels to be lower.

Erdogan has said he wants to end one of Europe's deadliest insurgencies. A sharp rise in violence since June 2011 has killed more than 800 soldiers and PKK guerrillas. Fighting has tapered off since October, as it does most years due to the weather.

The conflict has stunted economic growth, wrecked Turkey's human rights record and made EU membership elusive.

The war in neighboring Syria, where Kurdish groups linked to the PKK were fighting opponents of President Bashar al-Assad, has given the peace process some urgency.

Buldan and the others' meeting with Ocalan was the second since January by the BDP, which Erdogan has called the "PKK's extension," and he also met his brother. Until recently, the 64-year-old rebel commander was kept in seclusion since June 2011.

Ocalan is serving a life sentence for treason. In jail since 1999, he still holds sway over the PKK and is considered a hero by nationalist Kurds. Ethnic Kurds make up about 20 percent of Turkey's population of 75 million people.

There are also large numbers of Kurds living in Iraq, Syria and Iran, and Kurds are frequently described as the world's largest ethnic group without its own state.

The PKK, which once sought an independent Kurdish homeland, has scaled back its demands to limited self-rule in Turkey's mainly Kurdish southeast and greater cultural rights.

Authorities: Report of gunman at MIT was a hoax

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (AP) ? A false report of a gunman at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology that briefly caused a campus-wide lockdown Saturday stemmed from an electronic message sent to police, authorities said.

Officers searched for a man reported to be carrying a long rifle and wearing body armor but found nothing unusual, Cambridge police said. The report ? that alleged that the gunman was barricaded inside a building on campus ? turned out to be a hoax, and there was no threat to public safety, state police spokesman David Procopio said.

Cambridge police received the tip in an electronic chat message around 7:30 a.m., but witnesses on the scene eventually contradicted it, spokesman Dan Riviello said. Neither police nor MIT specified how the tip was received, though the police department's website says anonymous crime tips may be made via text message or email, in addition to a telephone hotline.

"The MIT community was sent a precautionary text message at 8:52 a.m. asking them to remain indoors and shelter in place," the university said in a statement issued following online criticism over delays in alerting the public that a gunman was possibly on campus.

A room-to-room search by MIT and Cambridge police, along with state police troopers, led officers to declare that the scene was clear at about 10:30 a.m., MIT said.

"No armed suspects were found in the building or on campus and police believe that the event, as reported, did not occur," according to a statement by Cambridge police.

Investigators are trying to identify the prankster and will pursue criminal charges if they do, Riviello said.

He declined to provide additional details or confirm reports that the IP address used by the prankster has been traced to New York, saying the investigation continued.

"At the conclusion of the ongoing investigation, MIT Police and other parts of the MIT administration will, as part of standard operating procedure, conduct an after-action review of MIT's police and communications actions during this event," the university said in its statement.

About 11,000 people attend the prestigious school outside Boston where students are famous for their smarts as well as their stunts, including once putting a police car on top of a domed campus building.

(AP) ? With the start of the Daytona 500 just hours away, NASCAR officials still have some cleaning up to do amid growing questions about fan safety.

The season opener will go off as planned Sunday less than 24 hours after at least 33 people were injured when a car flew into the fence during a NASCAR race at Daytona International Speedway, sending a tire and large pieces of debris sailing into the stands.

"Just seeing the carnage on the racetrack, it was truly unbelievable," driver Justin Allgaier said.

The final-lap accident Saturday marred the second-tier Nationwide Series race on the eve of a spectacle often called the Super Bowl of motorsports. Late into the night, track workers were scrambling to repair a huge section of fence that separates fans from the high-speed track.

Speedway President Joie Chitwood III has a news conference scheduled for Sunday morning to give the latest update on repairs and any safety changes that could be made before the "Great American Race."

The 12-car crash began about 200 feet from the start-finish line as the front-runners approached the checkered flag. Leader Regan Smith attempted to block Brad Keselowski for the win, triggering a horrific pileup that could have been much worse.

The front end of Larson's No. 32 car was sheared off, and his burning engine wedged through a gaping hole in the fence. Parts and pieces of his car sprayed into the stands, including a tire that cleared the top of the fence and landed midway up the spectator section closest to the track.

The 20-year-old Larson stood in shock a few feet from his car as fans in the stands waved frantically for help. Smoke from the burning engine briefly clouded the area, and emergency vehicles descended on the scene.

Ambulance sirens could be heard wailing behind the grandstands at a time the race winner would typically be doing celebratory burnouts.

"It was freaky. When I looked to my right, the accident happened," Rick Harpster of Orange Park said. "I looked over and I saw a tire fly straight over the fence into the stands, but after that I didn't see anything else. That was the worst thing I have seen, seeing that tire fly into the stands. I knew it was going to be severe."

Shannan Devine of Egg Harbor Township, N.J., was sitting about 250 feet from where the car smashed into the fence and could see plumes of smoke directly in front of her.

"I didn't know if there was a car on top of people. I didn't know what to think," she said. "I'm an emotional person and I immediately started to cry. It was very scary. Absolutely scary. I love the speed of the sport. But it's so dangerous."

Chitwood said 14 fans were treated on site and 14 others were taken to hospitals. Local officials said 19 people were taken to neighboring hospitals, including two who were in critical but stable condition.

Because of potential injuries, race winner Tony Stewart skipped the traditional victory celebration.

Stewart, who won for the 19th time at Daytona and seventh time in the last nine season-opening Nationwide races, was in no mood to celebrate.

"The important thing is what is going on on the frontstretch right now," said Stewart, a three-time NASCAR champion. "We've always known, and since racing started, this is a dangerous sport. But it's hard. We assume that risk, but it's hard when the fans get caught up in it.

"So as much as we want to celebrate right now and as much as this is a big deal to us, I'm more worried about the drivers and the fans that are in the stands right now because that was ... I could see it all in my mirror, and it didn't look good from where I was at."

There were at least five stretchers carrying injured people out of the stands, and a helicopter flew overhead.

Officials turned their attention to the track and the wreckage after injured were treated.

A forklift plucked Larson's engine out of the fence, and workers carried the tire out of the stands.

It was a chaotic finish to a race that was stopped for nearly 20 minutes five laps from the finish by a 13-car accident that sent driver Michael Annett to a hospital. His Richard Petty Motorsports team said he would be held overnight with bruising to his chest.

The race resumed with three laps to go, and the final accident occurred with Smith trying to hold off Keselowski through the final turn.

"It's Daytona. You want to go for the win here," Smith said. "I don't know how you can play it any different, other than concede second place, and I wasn't willing to do that today. Our job is to put them in position to win, and it was, and it didn't work out."

As the cars began wrecking all around Smith and Keselowski, Stewart slid through for the win, but Larson plowed into Keselowski and his car was sent airborne into the fence. When Larson's car came to a stop, it was missing its entire front end. Larson, who made his Daytona debut this week, stood with his hands on his hips before finally making the mandatory trip to the care center.

"I took a couple big hits there and saw my engine was gone," Larson said. "Just hope everybody's all right."

It appeared fans were lined up along the fence when Larson's car got airborne. But Chitwood said there was a buffer, adding there would be no changes to the seating before the Daytona 500.

"We don't anticipate moving any of our fans," Chitwood said. "We had our safety protocols in place. Our security maintained a buffer that separates the fans from the fencing area. With the fencing being prepared tonight to our safety protocols, we expect to go racing tomorrow with no changes."

Keselowski watched a replay of the accident and said it could cast a pall on the Daytona 500.

"I think until we know exactly the statuses of everyone involved, it's hard to lock yourself into the 500," Keselowski said. "Hopefully, we'll know soon and hopefully everyone's OK. And if that's the case, we'll staring focusing on Sunday."

Pamoja Education PLC Blog - MOOCs for Professional Development

Coursera ? My first two weeks

Mooc for PDI am a?Coursera?student and I am not alone! Coursera has literally hundreds of thousands of students ? studying for FREE. They are not unique, there is also?EdX, who may not have such an extensive choice of courses but is also impressive, well supported by top universities and definitely ?la tendence?. A quick look through Coursera shows that it has a impressively wide range of course choice and is supported by top universities in the US, including Stanford, CalTech and UPenn.

And it?s free????

Yes it is. I am currently following a seven week course from?Stanford on Game Theory?and it is well presented and fun?.don?t forget that I like Math!

I would recommend you to read the?following article?about who created Coursera and how it may be monetized in the future. The key point is that for the moment, and the foreseeable future, it is free for the individual student.

How can it be free?

The coursera model is?scalable. Once the work has been done to create a course, and in these courses the use of green-screen and tablets to make the video lectures is really impressive, then there is no limit to the number of students that the course can accept. The course includes short video lectures, discussion forums (optional), simulations (optional) and problem sets. The problem sets are multi ? choice and graded automatically. Apart from dealing with technical or organizational problems the lecturers have no need to be involved in the course, apart form the odd input into a discussion forum. This scalability means that there is a front end cost to create the course which is known but after that there is little additional expense.

What is the student experience?

I am really enjoying the course. That is not surprising, since I love doing mathematics and my reasons for doing the course are self ? motivated. However, if I did not have a strong math background and if I was not used to a certain type of thinking about problems then I can imagine a student becoming quickly discouraged. There is not much technical mathematics in the course but it does require a certain approach that a general student might struggle with. If I was not capable of this then the course would not help me develop the key meta skills that allow me to cope with the thinking required.

There are study groups in the course and if I hooked up with the right people we could collaborate to develop the necessary thinking or technical skills. However, the key point is that there is no ?teacher? to go to that supports or models these approaches to mathematical thinking. Meta thinking and learning is not explicitly built into the course. I think this is a similar situation for another much vaunted education platform ??Khan Academy. Coursera and Khan Academy are content delivery platforms, no bad thing, but that is just one (perhaps rather small and unimportant) element in the education of a person. I would argue that this is just as true for a subject such as Mathematics as a ?creative? subject such as Art. One could argue that pure content delivery is a general model for university education and not the fault of the online platform. However, I would rather you compare such an experience with the learning environment in a good school

Courses vs Curriculum

One thing I really like about Coursera is the name. I do not know whether this was a definite decision or subliminal but Coursera provides courses and this seems an honest acceptance that Coursera is about content delivery. I am aware that the etymology of?Course?and?Curriculum? both come from the idea of forward movement, a race. However, in modern usage I think a Course is a body of knowledge to be communicated whereas a Curriculum is a broader definition of learning. Curriculum implies process, meta thinking, methodology and a set of values. Curriculum needs teachers and teachers are not scalable. If I have hundreds of thousands of students I need thousands of teachers. The more students, the more teachers. That costs money.

So what is a teacher for?

My positive experience with Coursera and my (also positive) experience as an online educator is helping me to crystalise my thinking about education, teaching and learning in these environments. We seem to be getting to the nub of the issue. During the next few weeks I will blog about what it means to TEACH online and what it means for students if they are to LEARN. Here are some questins that will motivate my next few blog posts.

If content delivery can be leveraged for quality and made scalable for access where does this leave the role of a teacher if they are no longer the primary means of content delivery?Do online ?taught? curriculum allow students to learn or are they just content delivery with bells and whistles? Can teachers in online environments help students develop meta thinking skills and transmit value sets, approaches to learning and routines that help students learn how to learn? How?

This is all fascinating stuff and I really hope you will join me on this journey. I am excited about hearing your thoughts.

FCC proposal hopes to grow WiFi spectrum by 35 percent, reduce hotspot congestion

Sick of overloaded public WiFi? So is the FCC. Back at CES FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski said we were heading for a WiFi "traffic jam," and promised to work with Government agencies to score public networks a little extra spectrum. In an effort to make good on the pledge, the FCC has now proposed a 195 megahertz expansion of the 5GHz band, giving unlicensed wireless devices (that would be your tablets, laptops, phones etc) a little bandwidth to share. The move would give devices a wider channel, which should translate to faster connection speeds. It isn't all just for the sake of your local coffee shop's network congestion, however -- the proposal also fulfills requirements laid out by the Middle Class Tax Relief and Jobs Creation Act of 2012, which called for expanding spectrum for unlicensed use. Sounds like a winning move to us. Check out the FCC's official press announcement after the break.

NCAA says 3 former UM coaches misled probe

Published: Wednesday, February 20, 2013 at 1:31 p.m.
Last Modified: Wednesday, February 20, 2013 at 1:31 p.m.

CORAL GABLES ? The NCAA believes former Miami assistant coaches Clint Hurtt, Aubrey Hill and Jorge Fernandez provided false or misleading information during the probe into the Hurricanes? athletic department.

The NCAA said all three violated ?principles of ethical conduct? as part of the notice of allegations served against the Hurricanes, according to a person who spoke to The Associated Press Wednesday on condition of anonymity because the allegations have not been released publicly.

Hurtt and Hill, who was an assistant coach at Florida in head coach Will Muschamp?s first season before stepping down last summer, were members of Miami?s football staff. Fernandez worked on the men?s basketball staff.

Several other coaches are named or referenced in the allegations, including Missouri basketball coach Frank Haith. But only Hurtt, Hill and Fernandez are facing the ethical-conduct charge, commonly known as NCAA Rule 10.1.

Hurtt is currently on the staff at Louisville. Hill is not working as a coach at this time, and Fernandez spent last season as an assistant at Marshall, resigning last May.

The notice of allegations was delivered to Miami on Tuesday, and the university is facing the charge that it had a ?lack of institutional control? ? one of the worst things the NCAA can levy against a member school. The charge revolves around how the school allegedly failed to monitor conduct of Nevin Shapiro, a rogue booster and convicted felon who provided cash, gifts and other items to players on the football and men?s basketball teams.

University President Donna Shalala said Tuesday night that the Hurricanes have suffered enough already through self-imposed sanctions. Through a university spokesman, she declined further comment Wednesday.

The NCAA said Hurtt and Hill committed the same violations, at least related to the ethical-conduct matter.

The NCAA alleged both provided meals, transportation and lodging to either recruits, current players, or both in either 2008 or 2009. Both were interviewed by the NCAA during the course of its probe and allegedly denied providing those extra benefits, statements the NCAA said were contradicted in each case by what players told them separately.

Hurtt also took a $2,500 personal loan from Shapiro, which was repaid. The NCAA also believes he sent about 40 impermissible text messages to recruits, which typically is a secondary, or minor, violation.

Fernandez, the NCAA alleged, ?knowingly provided extra benefits? in the form of an air ticket. The NCAA said Fernandez denied using air miles for the tickets for a men?s basketball player and a high school coach, despite evidence to the contrary.

In February 2012, Miami center Reggie Johnson was ruled ineligible by the school after an investigation revealed that members of his family accepted ?impermissible travel benefits? from a member of the school?s former coaching staff, without specifying Fernandez or anyone else by name. The university said Johnson was not aware of the benefits, personally accepted nothing and that his family had been told they were allowed.

Johnson was reinstated quickly last season, and remains a key part of this season?s team ? now ranked No. 2 in the nation and leading the Atlantic Coast Conference. The ongoing cloud of the scandal is not hurting the Hurricanes, basketball coach Jim Larranaga said Tuesday night.

?If it was overshadowing what we were doing, this room would not be packed,? Larranaga said after his team beat Virginia. ?We?re getting so much exposure. We can only focus on the things we have control over. We have nothing to do with the investigation.?

Several other former Miami coaches are named in the allegations as well, including one-time men?s basketball assistant Jake Morton, who the NCAA said, among other things, accepted ?supplemental income? of at least $6,000 from Shapiro. Morton is now on the staff at Western Kentucky.

Missouri coach Frank Haith is alleged of failing ?to promote an atmosphere for compliance,? a charge specific to how he handled things when Shapiro allegedly wanted money in exchange for not going public with accusations that he paid to help the Hurricanes recruit a player.

Some of the allegations are more than 10 years old, including a claim that Shapiro bought a suit for former Miami star running back Willis McGahee to wear to the Heisman Trophy ceremony in 2002.

Other allegations include that he paid for dinners at Benihana, televisions, sneakers, Miami Heat tickets, bowling parties, one player?s engagement ring, a used washer-dryer set for current New England Patriots lineman Vince Wilfork, and that he directed his girlfriend to give two former Hurricanes no-show jobs for a couple of months.

Evolution of diversity surprisingly predictable

Wednesday, February 20, 2013

Similar?or even identical?mutations can occur during diversification in completely separate populations of E. coli evolving over more than 1,000 generations, according to researchers at the University of British Columbia and the University of Montana.

The findings by UBC zoologist and mathematician Michael Doebeli and Matthew Herron, a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Montana, will be published next week in the open access journal PLOS Biology.

The researchers allowed three populations of E. coli, each consisting of generalist bacteria competing for two food sources (glucose and acetate), to evolve independently. After 1,200 generations all three populations had evolved into two coexisting types, each with a specialized physiology adapted to one of the foods.

Herron and Doebeli sequenced the genomes of populations of bacteria frozen at 16 different points during their evolution, and discovered a surprising amount of similarity between independently evolving populations.

"Understanding the intricacies of diversification is important for understanding why there are so many species on Earth," says Doebeli.

"Not only did similar genetic changes occur, but the temporal sequence in which the changes occur over evolutionary time was also similar between the different evolving populations. This 'parallelism' implies that diversification is a deterministic process driven by natural selection."

Herron and Doebeli argue that a particular form of selection?negative frequency dependence?plays an important role in driving diversification. When bacteria are either glucose specialists or acetate specialists, a higher density of one type will mean fewer resources for that type, so bacteria specializing on the alternative resource will be at an advantage.

Recent advances in sequencing technology allowed Doebeli and Herron to sequence large numbers of whole bacterial genomes. As technology advances, they believe similar experiments in larger organisms will be possible.

Cool. Were they all done on iPad, or just the single? Also, just out of curiosity, how were you mixing it? iPad there, too, or did you export? And, what was your monitoring setup?

Thanks

I do everything on the ipad these days...this is a mix of JamUp Pro XT, Beatmaker2 (piano, drums...custom mapped kit) GarageBand mobile (beginning piano melody and bass) imported GB tracks to BM2...laid down drum tracks...Audiobus with JamUp in BM2 (beta version...not released to public yet). Then exported everything to Cubasis for a quick mix. Then exported to a desktop DAW for .mp3 conversion. Monitored through a mix of headphones (for late night recording) and a pair of powered studio monitors for initial mix (with various tests on different sound systems to get a feel for all around sound). It's quite the process but no worse than doing it on a desktop...in some ways, a lot more intuitive.

NCAA acknowledges 'missteps' in Miami case

The NCAA will proceed in the Miami case 'with information properly obtained by the enforcement staff.'

AP

CORAL GABLES, Fla. (AP) -- The NCAA said that the information it collected as part of the Miami investigation through depositions performed as part of a former booster's bankruptcy proceedings will not be part of the case against the Hurricanes.

However, the NCAA said the case against Miami will proceed "with information properly obtained by the enforcement staff."

The NCAA released the results of an external probe of how it investigated the Hurricanes on Monday, nearly a month after revealing what it called "a very severe issue of improper conduct." That issue was that the attorney for former booster and convicted Ponzi scheme architect Nevin Shapiro was used to improperly obtain information.

The NCAA said missteps were made. Miami had no immediate comment.

And now that this step is complete, the path is clear -- again -- for Miami to finally receive its notice of allegations from the nearly two-year-old investigation into what rules were broken within athletics. Shapiro said he provided dozens of athletes, coaches and recruits with impermissible benefits for several years, starting in 2002. Shapiro is now serving a 20-year federal prison sentence for his Ponzi scheme, which bilked investors of about $930 million.

The report the NCAA released Monday said Shapiro's attorney, Maria Elena Perez, billed the NCAA for $57,115 worth of work performed from October 2011 through July 2012. The NCAA said it paid about $18,000.

One of the people Perez deposed, former Miami equipment room staffer Sean Allen, said he was not contacted during the NCAA's external probe. Allen provided some testimony that could have damaged Miami, but since the NCAA does not have subpoena power, what he said in that deposition to Perez should never have been part of the case against the Hurricanes.

A transcript of Allen's deposition shows that much of his deposition involved Perez asking questions about Miami athletics, matters which would not have seemed directly involved to Shapiro's bankruptcy case.

The NCAA said Perez offered to use depositions and subpoena power to assist with the case against Miami. The NCAA also said Perez was willing to ask any questions they wanted, but that the enforcement staff was urged by the governing body's legal team not to go forward with the plan to collaborate with Perez.

"We found very clearly the enforcement staff disregarded ... the advice they got from the legal staff," said Kenneth L. Wainstein, the attorney who led the probe that NCAA President Mark Emmert ordered last month.
