Spotlight: SPC professor Darlene Westberg ? St. Petersburg College ...

Professor, College of Computer and Information Technology

Darlene Westberg

Darlene Westberg

Darlene Westberg was nominated for the Center of Excellence for Teaching and Learning (CETL) Faculty Spotlight because of her participation on numerous college-wide committees and dedication to student learning.

Westberg was born in Illinois in a small town west of Chicago where her father served as mayor. The family moved to Madeira Beach when she was 13, where she enrolled at Madeira Beach Junior High and then Seminole High School. She dropped out of school in her junior year. Eight years later, she received a high school diploma from Dixie Hollins night school.

She received her Associate in Arts, Associate in Science in computer science, and a certificate in microcomputer applications from St. Petersburg Junior College and a bachelor?s degree in management and computers from Eckerd College. She received her master?s in instructional technology from the University of South Florida.

CETL caught up with Westberg to learn about teaching computer programming and Web development.

CETL: How did you get started in Computer Science / Instructional Technology?

Westberg: When I was going to school here my Introduction to Business teacher said, ?If you want to make money in the 80?s you need to learn computers.? I had two teenagers and no child support?I needed to match my income as a waitress. A schoolmate of mine was the student assistant in the Computer Science department and convinced me to take Introduction to Computers and Programming. Later, I replaced her as the student assistant in the CS department.

?

CETL: What prepared you for your faculty role?

Westberg: Tutoring students in computer programming as the student assistant helped prepare me to teach. I also worked at Honeywell on Trident Missile Memory Stacks, Mars Rover, Space Shuttle Main Engine Controls and Single Subscriber Terminals (encryption) and was promoted to Software Quality Engineer. I also taught Macintosh and PC applications at Raytheon for three years. Just before coming to SPJC, I was at Polk Community College as Coordinator of the Teaching Learning Computer Centers for two years.

?

CETL: What new developments are happening in your field?

Westberg: Windows 8 and Visual Studio 2012 are now available.

?

CETL: What are your biggest challenges in preparing students in your field?

Westberg: Keeping up with technology is a constant challenge. Since I started as a full time professor (I was an adjunct for 16 years), I have taught six versions of Visual Studio and as I mentioned, the seventh is now out.

?

CETL: What do your students seem to appreciate or enjoy about your class?

Westberg: I demonstrate code in face-to-face classes that is NOT in the textbook. The students follow along and I help with any syntax errors. I create errors on purpose to show them common pitfalls.

?

CETL: What teaching strategy do you find effective?

Westberg: Giving students mneumonics for programming logic exercises.

?

CETL: What are you most excited about regarding your faculty role?

Westberg: I am so very thankful for the opportunity to pay forward what I received from St. Petersburg College!

?

CETL: What can students do to prepare for a career in your field?

Westberg: Write code, code and more code?

Consumer confidence hits 4-year high, survey shows

2 hrs.

U.S. consumer confidence rose in October to its highest in more than four years, according to a private sector report released on Thursday.?

The Conference Board, an industry group, said its index of consumer attitudes gained to 72.2 from a downwardly revised 68.4 in September. It was the highest level since February 2008, though it came in shy of economists' estimates for 72.5.?

September was originally reported as 70.3

The survey was another piece of evidence that the recovery, while not robust, is at least picking up a little steam. Weekly jobless claims fell more than expected in the latest week, the Labor Department reported Thursday. And a survey of private sector hiring that's seen as a preview for the monthly jobs data Friday,?showed that U.S. companies created 158,000 jobs in October.

Non-farm payrolls are forecast to have risen 124,000 last month, barely more than September's 114,000 gain, according to economists polled by Reuters.?The so-called?headline jobless rate is expected to edge up to 7.9 percent in October, after it dropped to 7.8 percent in September from 8.1 percent in August.

HBT: Romo's parade T-shirt: 'I just look illegal'

The Giants had their World Series victory parade in San Francisco yesterday afternoon. Like the one in 2010, it was festive and well-attended. The details, if you care about such things, are here.

And of course, no Giants victory parade is complete without the quirky closer doing something quirky or provocative. In 2010 it was Brian Wilson doing Brian Wilson things. Yesterday it was Sergio Romo ? the son of Mexican immigrants ? wearing this:

According to the Merc, Wicky Tees, the small t-shirt company which makes them saw a big bump in orders yesterday after Romo sported it.

House flipping is back. MAKE MONEY. - Zillow Real Estate Advice

I have worked with a lot of flippers, and the profits vary tremendously...it is not for the faint of heart. ?In some transactions my clients break even at bestdue to unforseen circumstances, but because they are flipping 12+ homes a year, they don't care. ?If you are a first timer, and go "all in" on a "loser," ?well, then you are going to be sitting on an asset for a few years and renting it out.

This happened to me recently, after the 8k tax incentive dried up, sales prices of starter homes took a nose dive in CA...I just rented out the asset after being unable to sell it at a "break even" price. ?I could sell it now, but the rent is good...so I might just keep it until prices go up substantially more in the future.

Best wishes from So-Cal and good luck
