L'Oreal eyes $1.3 billion in India sales by 2020

MUMBAI | Thu Jan 10, 2013 7:59pm IST

MUMBAI (Reuters) - L'Oreal(OREP.PA), the world's biggest cosmetics group, plans to quadruple sales over the next seven years in India, the fastest-growing beauty market in the world.

The company, which opened a research centre in Mumbai on Thursday to develop products specifically for Indian consumers, aims to grow sales to 70 billion rupees by 2020, its chief executive Jean-Paul Agon said.

Rising demand for quality and high-end beauty products among India's emerging middle class is expected to help L'Oreal grow by more than 20 percent every year in the country.

The French company, which sells shampoos and cosmetics under brands such as L'Oreal Paris, Garnier and Maybelline New York, had earlier said it planned to invest 9.7 billion rupees in India from 2011 through 2016.

"Out of the 66 shades of skin colour found in this world, more than 40 are found in India. That's an example of how varied and complex the requirements of this market are," Jochen Zaumseil, executive vice-president, Asia-Pacific, told Reuters.

L'Oreal, which has only 8 percent market share in India and faces tough competition from the likes of Hindustan Unilever and Procter and Gamble, said it is open to acquiring strong regional brands but is focusing on growing the business organically.

India contributes between 1 and 2 percent of the company's global revenue but is strategically one of its top five markets, Agon said.

Family life grounds Matthew McConaughey

NEW YORK (AP) ? Actor Matthew McConaughey credits his growing family for the success that 2012 brought him.

"One, they ground you. Two, when you have that kind of structure at home and you feel stable at home it makes it much easier to fly higher and wider when you're outside of home," McConaughey said Monday at the New York Film Critics Circle Awards.

The 43-year-old received the best supporting actor honor for "Magic Mike" and "Bernie." He garnered critical success in 2012 for "Mud" and "The Paperboy," both shown in competition at the Cannes Film Festival.

"Got a great family that loves what I do, they're happy for papa when papa is happy. Papa is happy when he's working, and they like it when papa goes to work," he said of his busy year.

"Things that I've been working on came to fruition personally, workwise, healthwise. And we just decided to embrace it all ? myself, my family ? decided to embrace it all," he said. "Even when it was work that I was doing that my family wasn't necessarily doing. My family was pushing me to go, 'Go get it on. Do it. We're right behind you. We got it.'"

McConaughey married long-time girlfriend Camila Alves in June. He announced last month on his Whosay page that Alves had given birth to their third child, Livingston, on Dec. 28.

"Livingston had a lot to say this morning," he joked. "He had a mouthful of milk. That's what he had."

McConaughey said his older children, 4-year-old son, Levi, and 3-year-old daughter, Vida, were excited about the NYFCC award, but even more excited about his return home in Texas.

"They're like, 'Get the trophy and come back home,'" he said. "I said, 'I'm coming back home.'"

Inauguration Lineup Includes Beyonce, Kelly Clarkson, James Taylor

In addition to the political crowd-planning that's part of the pomp and circumstance of a presidential inauguration, three musical stars will join the swearing-in ceremony in a couple weeks.

Beyonce Knowles, Kelly Clarkson and James Taylor will each take part in Obama's second inauguration, the Presidential Inaugural Committee said this morning. Knowles will sing the National Anthem, Clarkson, "My Country, 'Tis of Thee," and Taylor, "America the Beautiful."

The trio supported President Obama in the campaign.

Beyonce urged fans to vote and posted a letter endorsing the president to her website. She also sported earrings with Obama's name on them and hosted an Obama fundraiser with her husband, Jay-Z, in New York City.

Though she's a Republican at heart, Clarkson said she was voting for Obama again this fall because of his difference from Mitt Romney on social issues.

And Taylor stumped for Obama at his concerts and performed more than once for Democratic National Convention fundraisers. He also performed at the convention in September.

Beyonce performed in 2009 at the inauguration concert and one of 10 inaugural balls, singing the Etta James classic "At Last" for the Obamas' first dance as president and first lady.

The Presidential Inaugural Committee said Obama had a hand in deciding which singing stars would take part in the ceremonies this year.

A whole slew of celebrities are planning to attend the Creative Coalition Inaugural Ball, including Kirsten Dunst, Ashley Greene, Matt Bomer, Paula Abdul, Taraji P. Henson, Omar Epps, David Arquette and Creative Coalition president Tim Daly, according to The Washingtonian.

What Cancer Epidemic? Rate of Cancer Diagnoses and Deaths ...

More and moreOne definition of the word epidemic is "a rapid spread or increase in the occurrence of something." The good news is that is not happening with cancer in the United States. To be sure, cancer remains the second leading cause of death in the United States, but a new report by the National Cancer Institute confirms that overall cancer death rates continue to decline and that the incidence of cancer continues to fall for men and holds steady for women. From the press release:

The decline in overall cancer death rates continues a trend that began in the early 1990s.? From 2000 through 2009, cancer death rates decreased by 1.8 percent per year among men and by 1.4 percent per year among women. Death rates among children up to 14 years of age also continued to decrease by 1.8 percent per year. ...

Between 2000 and 2009, overall cancer incidence rates decreased by 0.6 percent per year among men, were stable among women, and increased by 0.6 percent per year among children (ages 0 to 14 years).

Cancer Death rates

The report highlights the increased rates of cancer related to the human papilloma virus (HPV) which can be prevented by vaccination. HPV not only causes cervical cancer, but also mouth, throat and anal cancer. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that both girls and boys be vaccinated against HPV. It's just plain stupid for parents to refuse to have their children vaccinated against this disease.
