Connecticut hasn't escaped the flu outbreak either

Connecticut is a lone green state in a sea of red, but we're not talking politics. Connecticut shows up on a map as a state with minimal flu-like illness, surrounded by states with high flu-like activity levels, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It has just issued its Influenza Surveillance Report for the last week of December, called ILINet.

But if you're worried about the flu, that's not a reason to move to Hartford, health professionals say. Connecticut is far from flu-free, and CDC data aren't perfect.

"Germs don't respect state lines," said ABC News Chief Medical Editor Dr. Richard Besser. He said Connecticut certainly didn't escape the flu just because other states have had higher percentages of outpatient office visits.

Click here to read how the flu has little to do with cold weather.

It's possible the Connecticut's numbers were artificially deflated because of students' winter break, said William Gerrish, a spokesman for the Connecticut Department of Public Health. College student health centers account for a large percentage of flu reports in the state.

"Unfortunately, these student health centers have been essentially closed during the long holiday break resulting in an artificially low statewide ILINet activity level," he said.

Gerrish also said that a separate flu map, which includes only laboratory confirmed flu cases, shows Connecticut as a state with "widespread" flu cases, meaning that no areas are flu-free. (ILINet is broader and includes flu-like illnesses.)

"These indicators clearly show that Connecticut has not avoided the flu," Gerrish said.

Kogan Agora launches as a dual-SIM Android 4.0.4 device priced at $149

Kogan has confirmed the upcoming release of the Agora smartphone. The handset is launching with a 5-inch display and perhaps key for some ? as a dual-SIM device. The handset will begin shipping next month where it will be available for a total of eleven countries and with a relatively low price point.

More specifically, the Kogan Agora will begin shipping on February 11. The available countries are varied and include the US along with Australia and the UK. The handset will be sold exclusively through the Kogan website. The price is $149.99. And keep in mind, that is a contract-free $149.

5241e426061f4600141b2d651f551285

Needless to say, with a low price you cannot expect super high-end specs. We suspect the key attraction for some will be the dual-SIM card support, however the handset also features a 5-inch (480 x 800) display and is running Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich. Network support includes 3G on the 850, 900, 1900 and 2100MHz bands.

Other goodies include a dual-core 1GHz Cortex A9 processor, 512MB of RAM, 4GB of internal storage, a microSD card slot, GPS, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth, a 0.3 megapixel front-facing camera and a 5 megapixel rear-facing camera. Bottom line here, the Kogan Agora is far from a screamer in terms of specs, however given the low price it could make for a handset worth checking out.

Kyla's Adventures in Real Estate: Buying Local in Newcastle Ontario ...

Our sister-in-law got great news this week in the form of a full time position with the Durham Region YMCA - like all events and news in our family, this was to be celebrated, and we decided on a roast beef dinner.? Robin bought a roast from our local butcher shop, Clark Meats, here in Newcastle, and I just have to say how great it was.? Not only because of the fantastic service and fair prices we receive in their shop, but the knowledge that our dinner came from a farm not more than 10 minutes away from our homes made it so much better.? We adore shopping and supporting the local merchants, shop owners, restaurants, business owners of Newcastle Ontario - if you are in the area, we encourage you to explore what our village has to offer - you'll be pleasantly surprised!

PFT: Jaguars fire Mularkey after one season

Justin SmithAP

If the RG3 knee injury, which came at a time when he clearly shouldn?t have been playing, will spark a culture change in the NFL when it comes to injured players playing, it may take a little while for the shift to begin.

Maybe, perhaps, until God isn?t willing and/or the creek rises.

That likely won?t happen in time to keep 49ers keeping defensive lineman Justin Smith out of Saturday night?s showdown with the Packers as he continues to recover from a torn triceps.

Smith practiced on Thursday, once again on a limited basis.? As Scott Ostler of the San Francisco Chronicle explains the situation, it sounds like the team will let Smith play if he thinks he can, which sounds a lot like the rationale given by the Redskins for leaving Griffin in Sunday?s loss to the Seahawks, until multiple ligaments in his knee popped.

?Well, [Smith] told me he?s ready and he?s ready to go,? defensive coordinator Vic Fangio said Tuesday.? ?And that?s enough for?me.?

On Wednesday, Jim Harbaugh said that, in the end, it?s up to the physicians not the players.? ?The doctors are always consulted,? Harbaugh said.? ?And the player knows his body the best, but the doctors have final decision.? They?re not going to just let a guy go out and play if he can?t protect himself, or could severely make it worse than what it already is.? That?s a general rule of?thumb.?

Still, the players think the doctors will defer to their supposed patients.? ?It?s basically us,? tight end Delanie Walker said.? ?[The team doctor] will tell you he don?t think you should [play], but if you feel like you think you can, they?d give you the OK.? You know your body better than?anyone.?

That?s the common attitude for most NFL teams.? The players want to play, and the team doctors won?t be the team doctors for long if they don?t let the players play when the players want to play.

In Smith?s case, if (when) he plays he?ll be wearing a brace.? Ostler asked Harbaugh how the brace would protect Smith?s damaged triceps muscle.? ?At the risk of sounding like I don?t know what I?m talking about,? Harbaugh said, ?I suggest maybe talking to the brace manufacturer, or to one of our medical personnel or?trainers.?

Harbaugh reportedly inserted a long pause before saying ?manufacturer,? which created the impression that his response was ?talk to the brace.?? As to talking to the team?s medical personnel or trainers, Ostler says the team won?t allow that.

So, yes, we?ll all get more info from talking to the brace.

Rebound of video game consoles seen as new platforms arrive ...

A new study from research firm IDC has forecast that demand for Microsoft?s Xbox 360, Nintendo?s Wii and Wii U, and Sony?s PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 2 is expected to rise in four global regions through 2016.

?The console ecosystem is in a state of flux since these platforms need to support an ever-growing array of non-gaming features and services at the same time that game distribution and monetization is moving in a digital direction,? said Lewis Ward, research manager of IDC?s Gaming service.

?At the same time, it doesn?t appear that alternative platforms ? set-top boxes from cable companies, Web-connected smart TVs, and so on ? are positioned to materially disrupt the trajectory of the ?big 3? console OEMs in 2013 or 2014. Discs will remain the console game revenue mainstay for years to come.?

Key takeaways from the new forecast include:

? In December 2012, PS3 system shipments eclipsed the number of Xbox 360?s shipped worldwide, despite the PS3 launching a year later than the Xbox 360 (an estimated 77 million bundles versus approximately 76 million bundles shipped)

o Nintendo?s Wii U will find an audience; global bundle shipments will exceed 50 million by year-end 2016

? The volume of packaged game discs shipped will decline an average of roughly 3 percent per year through 2016, as console spending shifts into digital channels

?2011 and 2012 were tough for many console game disc developers and publishers,? added Ward. ?With the advent of eighth-generation consoles, starting with the Wii U, historical norms strongly imply that game disc revenue will stop bleeding in 2013 and rise substantively in 2014,? said Ward.

The regional breakdown includes North America, Western Europe, Japan, and a combined Rest of World (ROW). Console bundle and packaged game disc shipments, console installed bases, hardware and packaged software ASPs, total hardware and packaged software revenue, and total console gamers are some of the key metrics considered.

ID your cat or dog | The Rock River Times

Staff Report

Winnebago County Animal Services has received more than 4,900 lost cats and dogs this year, many of which had no form of identification, making it nearly impossible for the shelter to find their owners. When pets don?t have identification, Animal Services relies heavily upon pet owners to regularly visit the shelter to look for their lost pet.

Having identification on your cat or dog can help your pet get back home faster and may cost you less to reclaim them. It?s very important to have identification on your pet during the holidays, especially if you are traveling. Common types of pet identification include a rabies tag, microchip, or name tag.

A rabies tag is a link to your address and phone number and is attached to your pet?s collar. It?s important to keep your address and phone number current with your local Animal Services agency. A rabies tag also shows that your pet is currently vaccinated against rabies, which is a virus that affects the brain and can be passed from animals to people. Winnebago County residents are required to vaccinate any cat or dog four months or older for rabies every year and purchase a county rabies tag.

Microchips are a permanent form of identification and are implanted under the skin of the cat or dog. A microchip is the size of a grain of rice. Shelters in Illinois are required to scan all cats and dogs when impounded and before they are adopted or euthanized. Veterinary clinics also have scanners and can scan a lost pet. A universal scanner will pick up microchips from the different manufacturers.

Winnebago County Animal Services microchips all cats and dogs adopted or reclaimed from their facility. It is important for pet owners to register their microchip with their local animal control and with the microchip manufacturer. Pet owners should always keep current address and phone number information on file at Animal Services, their veterinarian, and the microchip company.

At the very least, pet owners should purchase a name tag available online and at local pet stores with the pet owner?s current phone number engraved on it.

Winnebago County Animal Services encourages all pet owners to visit the shelter if they?ve lost a pet. For more information on lost pets, visit the website at www.wcasrock.org or call (815) 319-4100.
