PS4 release date teased by Sony exec as May

Sony has teased the eagerly awaited Sony PS4 release date with a company executive hinting that the upcoming console will be officially unveiled in May, weeks ahead of E3 2013.

Seemingly confirming the next-generation gamer?s imminent launch, Sony?s Vice President of Home Entertainment, Hiroshi Sakamoto has been quoted as suggesting the Nintendo Wii U rival will touch down as early as May as the Japanese gaming giant looks to beat Microsoft and the much rumoured Xbox 720 to the next-gen punch.

?It?s still a big secret, but our Sony PlayStation friends are getting ready,? Sakamoto told Chilean website Emol when asked directly if a Sony PS4 launch announcement can be expected in 2013. He added: ?I only can say that we?re focused on the games related E3 event, booked for June. The announcement can take place there or even before, in May.?

Asked if the PS3 manufacturer was planning a high-profile launch or simply a teaser to its upcoming games console, Sakamoto added: ?Probably the first, we plan to release big news for this date, but we have to wait at least until May.?

Sony PS4 Rumours
Long the thing of much rumour and speculation, Sony PS4 rumours kicked into overdrive last year with many expecting the Japanese company to unveil its next-generation console ahead of launch around the lucrative pre-Christmas period.

With a 2012 Sony PS4 release date failing to come into fruition, many PS4 rumours have now been rolled over to 2013 with the expected Xbox 720 rival to line up with a raft of new high-profile features in tow.

Expected to retain its integrated Blu-ray player, recent PS4 rumours have hinted at an AMD processor making the cut with one tipster stating: ?Other than it being an AMD CPU and GPU, we don?t have much more specific details [on the PS4 specs]. It is said to be a 28nm part, likely fabbed at Global Foundries or OBM fir the first run.?

Whilst many are expecting Sony?s PS3 follow-on to touch down with retailers before the end of the year, further reports have suggested that an ?autumn 2014? PS4 release date is more likely. Although claims have been made that the Sony PS4 spec will see physical disk-based games ditched in favour of a fully digital offering, these reports have been largely rubbished due to the still limited high-speed internet access in many countries.

The economic cost of work related injury and illness?in Australia is estimated to be costing $60 billion a year in lost productivity or just under 5% of Gross Domestic Production (GDP).

A report released by Safe Work Australia (2012) showed the true cost to Australian business of poor HSE?practices is significant.

A lost time to injury (LTI) is defined as an occurence that resulted in a fatality, permanent disability or time lost from work.

Find a copy of the Workplace Injury and Disease Recording Standard (AS1885.1-1990)

On average just 25 per cent of the total cost of work?related injury and disease is due to the direct costs of work-related incidents. The remaining 75 per cent was accounted for by indirect costs such as lost productivity, loss of income and quality of life according to the?Industry Commission.

The costs associated with work-related injury and disease will vary depending on the severity of the incident. Severity can range from minor incidents involving little or no absence from work to fatalities. In addition, whether an incident results in an injury or disease will also be a determining factor on the cost structure of the incident.

Costs?associated with lost time due to workplace injury are direct and indirect. They include recruitment, training and staff turnover costs; investigation, legal fines and penalties as well as overheads of rehabilitation such as medical costs and?travel expenses. You can also include overtime costs, workcover deductablesa, lost production.

There are also financial imposts?felt by the?public purse which picks up incapacity costs such as those to fund carers, aids, medicine, hospitalisation, loss of future government?income (taxes), welfare and export earnings. Generally, it is the case that the more severe the incident, the longer the time taken to recover and return to duties. Further, the more intensive the medical treatment required, the higher will be the costs associated with the incident.

The resulting?impact on Australia?s international competitiveness is?immense and yet largely avoidable. Australia has some of the most prescriptive, detailed and, with the new harmonisation of OHS, progressive laws in the western world. ?If more Australian businesses?chose to adhere to those laws and use as guides to healthy and productive workplaces?rather than as simply a check list for compliance there would be?a positive impact on the number of work days lost to injury or disease.

Serial Killer Art And Homemade Guillotines ? Interview with the ...

JD Healy and Cathee Shultz once built their own guillotine. The couple now runs the Museum of Death, in Los Angeles.

The Museum of Death, in Los Angeles, features exhibits on suicide and executions.

The museum features Suicide Hall, the California Death Room and an exhibit devoted to execution equipment. Digital Dying recently spoke with them about Death Row prison shanks, the art of serial killers and the logistics of mummification.

What's in the Museum of Death? [JD]

We have the Execution Room, Suicide Hall, the California Death Room, the mortician and funeral room. As an artist I like to create environments, that way I can fully immerse the viewer. The California Death Room deals with death that happened in California, like the Black Dahlia murder and the Manson murder. Suicide Hall is everything from Heaven's Gate and Jonestown to individual suicides like Kurt Cobain. I just picked up five Death Row shanks from Oklahoma State Prison for the Execution Room.

What's a Death Row shank? [JD]

A shank is a prison-made knife. This guy who was a guard in Oklahoma State Prison for 20 years had a huge collection of different shanks that were made on Death Row, and five were actually used in murders. I bought those five. These are handmade weapons, made from bed frames and stuff, so they all look totally different. They can be metal, they can be plastic. These guys can make a weapon out of almost anything. Over the weekend I also bought an executioner's sword from the Boxer Rebellion, which occurred during the late 1890s to about 1900. The Chinese used the swords to execute westerners. We see these things as art, because we see everything as art.

Tell me about other shows? [Cathee]

We started as an art gallery in San Diego in 1987. We had shows about exotic weapons; how to build a neutron bomb, how to make a guillotine, how to make a hangman's gallows, or the little machine Kevorkian invented to kill people with. JD built an actual hangman's gallows. There's a chart put out by the Army about how long the rope should be based on body weight. If you don't put the noose in the right spot on the rope the weight of the body will break your neck as opposed to just decapitate you. JD and I got in a harness and have a photo of us hanging in the gallows. We also built a working guillotine and chopped watermelons. We had another show on the art of serial killers.

How did you get artwork from serial killers? [Cathee]

We started writing to them and asking them about their lives. We would try to find out about the killings or the case, if we could. They became our pen pals. We spoke to Richard Ramirez, Ottis Toole, John Wayne Gacy. He used to call us collect in the middle of the night. We wrote to Charles Manson one time and he wrote back. We would ask them for art, some of them we even got started doing art.

Are visitors ever offended by your exhibits? [Cathee]

When we had the gallows up I had an Irish guy come in, they had just hung Westley Allan Dodd in Washington and he couldn't believe we still hung people in this country. Another Irish guy got really angry at me for calling Jesus Christ a cannibal. Back before 9/11 we had five Israeli students, they came out of the museum and were so angry, particularly about the photos of Sharon Tate, one of the women killed in the Manson murders. They were like, ?We live with this, how could you show this?' My answer was, ?We live in a country where we have laws, and they give me the ability to do this'. I appreciate when people challenge me, because I think everyone shouldn't get it. Some of the more fascinating visitors are the Saudi Arabians and Iraqis. They still behead in Saudi Arabia, with an axe.

Given events like the Sandy Hook shooting, do you ever worry that showing violent things in the museum might lead to violence in real life? [Cathee]

Absolutely not, I believe in education. There is going to be copycat stuff, sure. I think a lot of the kidnappers and the shooters do it because they get so much press, but I also think these people are just mentally ill. They have problems that are way deeper than guns or other people talking about murder. Guns don't kill people, people do. I was raised with guns. I wouldn't date a boy in high school unless he had a gun in his car.

Have you ever gotten in legal trouble for exhibits? [Cathee]

We got in a lot of trouble for some of the sex stuff. We had these photos up by Charles Gatewood, a photographer from San Francisco. One was of a giant 300 pound nude woman lying in the forest. It was based on a famous painting. The other photo was of a tattoo artist holding a fetus by the head that he had just tattooed a little heart on. We had the photo of the nude in the forest up in our window and someone complained. The San Diego Police Department came and tried to take it down. The police officer was like you can put anything else up, just not this. And I pointed at the tattooed fetus photo and was like, 'So, I can put this up.' He said yes. It was crazy. We brought them to court. The ACLU [American Civil Liberties Union] in Washington was our lawyer.

Do you think there's a lack of death education in this country?? [Cathee]

When we started the museum in 1995 we had questions about death no one could answer. Our first Museum of Death shirt had our skull on it, I gave it to my niece and nephews and they were both kicked out of school for wearing it. Everyone is afraid to die and in general people are afraid that if you mention death it's going to bring death. Most people don't talk to their kids about it. ?Oh no, grandma went to heaven, she is a bird singing.' Come on! She is in the ground. ?How come grandma got stuck in a box in the ground?' They don't have answers to those questions.

What country do you think deals best with death? [Cathee]

Mexico. I love their culture. Your grandma and grandfather usually live together at home, whereas in my culture you can't wait to get away from siblings and on with life. They are so much more family oriented, so much more death oriented. As little kids you are watching your grandparents die. Then they have the Day of the Dead. You're raised your entire life knowing that when you die, once a year you get to come back and party with your family. That's brilliant. I want to be part of that culture.

What's your dream exhibit? [Cathee]

One of my goals is to have a dead rotting corpse in the Museum of Death. That's the Holy Grail. But you can't just have a stinking rotting corpse, you have to have a refrigeration unit and ventilation. As long as I have that, I don't think there is any legal reason I can't do it. People donate their bodies to us all the time. Fortunately our clientele is young and they're not going to die anytime soon. But also unfortunately our clientele is young and they're not going to die anytime soon. Luckily I know the coroners. I think it would be fascinating for scientific reasons. The corpse would have to be embalmed too, so it would rot slowly.

Do you guys have something artistic planned for your own deaths? [Cathee]

JD wants to be mummified. There is a place in Utah that does it, it's just really expensive. But hopefully he doesn't die anytime soon. I want to be plastinated, which is a process to preserve the body after death by replacing water and fat with plastics that don't smell or decay. But I think the guy who invented it has a patent on the process. I'm going to have to get to know him first. If I can't be plastinated I'll probably be mummified. And I want to be in the Museum of Death.

The Galaxy S III's 30 million sales landmark? Impressive, but still just part of a larger equation -- according to Samsung, its entire line of Galaxy S phones has now sold over 100 million units collectively. According to the firm's Flickr page, the line of popular smartphones passed the nine-digit mark two years and 7 months after the original Galaxy S hit the market. Since then, the Galaxy S II has sold over 40 million units, doubling its sales since February. New iterations old hardware and up and comers like the Galaxy S III mini contribute to the big number too, but Sammy puts the focus on old number three, citing 190,000 as the Galaxy S III's average daily sales. So, that's what it takes to sell 500 phones a minute.

There'll be an iPhone 5S and iPhone 6. There'll be a Retina iPad mini. There'll be a thinner, lighter iPad 5. There'll be an Apple A7 system-on-a-chip. There'll be an LTE radio that can do simultaneous voice and data, and eventually voice over LTE. There may be curved displays, biometric sensors and security, 4K AirPlay, onboard voice parsing, in-air gesture and face recognition, and much, much more. Apple's hardware will continue to tick tock its way towards the future, but for mainstream users, most of the time, the devices we hold in our hands today are more than good enough. And it's the stuff inside and around them that's become far, far more important.

iOS 6 was prep work, a way for Apple to get Google off their platform, fully outsource social, and better approach China. It prepared Apple for the future, but it didn't take them there. Likewise, iOS 5 introduced iCloud and Siri, but to this day Apple's online services are still unreliable, with the potential of tomorrow but mired in the problems of yesterday.

When BlackBerry 10 launches at the end of this month, iOS will become the oldest major operation system in mobile. Windows Phone still hasn't found feature parity or market traction, but Microsoft can throw Windows and Office money at it in perpetuity, and their phone division is perhaps the only part of the company that has shown any real, transformative forward thinking. They'll get there. Android still hasn't caught up on interface or overall experience, but their feature set has leap-frogged ahead, and Samsung is now interesting and competitive all on their own. Then there's Amazon, Facebook, Intel, NVIDIA, and who knows what else 2013 will bring.

All of them will throw more and more varied hardware, more often, at the market than Apple. But it's not Samsung's or LG's or HTC's or Nokia's or BlackBerry's hardware that Apple will face in the market. It's Google Now and BlackBerry Balance and whatever Facebook does with their social graph, and SDKs that let developers create compelling apps to leverage them.

It's not about outdated concepts like widgets or settings toggles, or inconsequential interface trends like skeuomorphism. it's about software and services that don't force us to hunt for data or controls, no matter how they're painted up, but that bring data and controls to us, flat or textured. It's about actionable notifications powered by headless apps and seamless inter-app communication. It's about predictive data assistance with multi-layer natural language interfaces. It's about data moving from cloud to device, or vice versa, transparently, in the background, so we have what we need, when and where we need it, without having to manage or store it. It's about all our stuff working together directly, device to device, so using one of them is akin to using any one of them. It's about an app ecosystem that pushes rather than than waits for us to pull, with demos and refunds, and analytics that delight developers and users alike. It's about the brilliant interaction of software and services both on-device and in the clouds.

Over the coming weeks and months, we're going to be seeing a ton of rumors and leaks, real and fake, about the new iPhones and iPads and other devices Apple is thinking about for this spring and fall. None of them will be as important to Apple, to us, or to the future of Apple's mobile platforms as iOS 7 and iCloud this summer.
