College basketball: Seton Hall stuns No. 8 Connecticut

Getting embarrassed by No. 1 Syracuse last week angered Seton Hall seniors Jordan Theodore and Herb Pope so much they vowed to make the Pirates' upcoming opponents pay.

West Virginia was the first to feel the wrath, and the Pirates followed that on Tuesday night with their biggest victory under coach Kevin Willard, a stunningly one-sided 75-63 upset of No. 8 Connecticut that ended nearly 11 years of frustration against the Huskies.

"We liked our chances at home," said Pope, who had 15 points and eight rebounds. "After last week, ever since we got blown out by Syracuse, they punched us square in the mouth and we didn't like it. I watched what they did to us over and over for like 48 hours straight and it left a bad taste in my mouth. So I think we all decided that we had to be tough at home. We had to be the ones to terrorize the other teams when they play here, make them afraid to come here."

Seton Hall (13-2, 2-1 Big East) dominated Connecticut (12-2, 2-1) and in the process put themselves on the map.

"I'm sure we'll get some national attention, because this was a great win against a great program," Willard said.

After building a 13-point halftime lead, Theodore helped close out the game by scoring all 19 of his points in the second half. The Pirates did the rest on defense, holding Connecticut to a season-low 35.1 percent from the field.

Fuquan Edwin and Aaron Cosby had 12 apiece as the Pirates beat Connecticut for

the first time since March 3, 2001.

USF 87, Morgan State 74: Angelo Caloiaro scored 19 points with a game-high eight rebounds, and the Dons (10-6) broke their three-game losing streak. .

Gene Bartow, who succeeded John Wooden at UCLA in 1976 and later began UAB's athletic program, has died, UAB officials said. He was 81.

Bartow, who was the president of the company that owns the NBA's Memphis Grizzlies and FedEx Forum, died Tuesday evening at his home in Birmingham, Ala., after a battle with stomach cancer, said university spokesman Norm Reilly.

Bartow was one of the winningest NCAA Division I basketball coaches with 647 wins over 34 seasons. He was inducted into the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame in 2009.

Women

San Jose State 70, Southern Utah 68: Brittany Johnson scored a career-high 28 points and two other Spartans hit double figures as SJSU (4-10) held off the Thunderbirds.

San Jose State built a 15-point lead early in the second half, only to see the Thunderbirds (4-10) get back into the game. San Jose State put the game away by scoring seven of its final 11 points from the free-throw line.
