'Moth-ers' Shine a Light on Nighttime Beauties

Think moths are nothing more than drab, little brown fliers stalking your wool sweaters? The folks behind National Moth Week, happening now, want to change that perception. Rutgers University moth expert Elena Tartaglia describes the diversity of moths and the role that they play in nature, and gives some tips on how to become a "moth-er."

'The Way, Way Back' movie review: Coming-of-age dramatic comedy ...

It's bad enough that he is relegated to the way, way back seat of his mother's boyfriend's "classic" Buick station wagon -- if there indeed is such a thing. You know the place: the rear-facing seat that makes it impossible for anyone to look cool, much less if that person is a 14-year-old boy. But for Duncan, that's just the beginning of his troubles.

Mired deep in the throes of teenage awkwardness, he is fatherless, he is friendless and -- forced to spend the summer at said Buick-driving boyfriend's beach house -- he is utterly alone. Technically speaking there are people there, circulating in and out of his general vicinity. But they're there only in a physical sense.

His mother, for example, is too busy trying to start over after the end of a bad marriage to give Duncan any attention. As for her boyfriend, his disinterest -- even disdain -- for Duncan couldn't be more obvious than his beach house's need for a coat of paint.

From an emotional standpoint, the way, way back seat of that Buick might as well be a deserted island.

Duncan and his teenage woes are the center of the coming-of-age dramatic comedy, "The Way, Way Back," and while it all might sound like well-covered ground -- you know: hopelessly awkward kid struggles to transition from boyhood to manhood -- it makes for a compelling and surprisingly sweet ride. Along the way, what easily could have become a total thematic retread ends up being a refreshingly warm release that doubles as an antidote to the traditional monsters-vs.-robots summertime fare.

Credit is largely due to first-time directors Nat Faxon and Jim Rush, two actors-turned-screenwriters who successfully make the transition to directors here after sharing the best adapted screenplay Oscar for "The Descendants" in 2011. Not only does their "Way, Way Back" script move along briskly, but they've managed to populate their film with a fantastic cast.?

Toni Collette ("The Sixth Sense") portrays Duncan's emotionally overtaxed mother, with AnnaSophia Robb ("Because of Winn-Dixie") as the pretty girl next door whose mere presence sends Duncan into fits of embarrassing babbling. The linchpin to it all, though, is relative newcomer Liam James as Duncan.

Viewers of the USA Network series "Psych" might recognize him as Young Shawn in that show's regular flashback segments, but this is James' first real chance to seize a leading role, and he acquits himself nicely. Telegraphing teenage angst and awkwardness with his every move -- and even when he's not moving or saying anything -- his Duncan is believable and, more importantly, entirely sympathetic.

Every bit as key is Steve Carell, once more demonstrating his range as an actor who can walk credibly in the worlds of both drama ("Little Miss Sunshine," "Seeking a Friend for the End of the World") and goofball comedy ("Anchorman," "The Office"). Here, he gets the thankless -- but essential -- role of Duncan's mother's boyfriend, Trent, an emotionally abusive boor whose idea of constructive criticism is to inform Duncan that he ranks a "3" on a scale of 1 to 10.

Along the way, Carell also showcases his generosity as an actor. Playing a despicable, self-absorbed jerk, he is entirely unlikeable. But his job here isn't to be liked. It's to bully Duncan emotionally and to stand back as the rest of the cast get all the funny lines.

Early on, Allison Janney is the chief beneficiary there, playing Trent's boozy, good-time-Charlie neighbor. At first glance, she is a hoot -- the kind of person you'd love to have a few margaritas with -- but she is also a sad and pitiful woman, one who wears her desperation her sleeve. She's very much like all the adults in Duncan's life.

Until, that is, he meets Owen, the manager of a nearby water park who takes the kid under his wing. In addition to giving him a job, he also ends up giving Duncan the one thing an awkward 14-year-old needs: a sense that somebody actually cares what happens to him.

Granted, that sounds far mushier than Owen would ever let on. Played wonderfully by the chameleonic Sam Rockwell, he is a fast-talking, wise-cracking man-child who plays Pac-Man when he has spare time and who can't seem to take anything seriously. Twenty years ago, one suspects, Bill Murray would have nailed this role.

Secretly, though, Owen knows just how Duncan feels. It's also clear that co-directors Faxon and Rash (who play supporting roles as water park employees Roddy and Lewis) know exactly how it feels -- perhaps even remember how it feels -- to be a 14-year-old nobody. That imbues their film with a sense of authenticity and a vital relatability, as Duncan becomes a sympathetic Everyteen, a loveable square peg in a world of obnoxiously round holes.

Best of all, they do all that without weighing their film down with emotional baggage. Often, this sort of movie takes a dark turn somewhere around two-thirds of the way through when it's time to deliver its Very Serious Message. And make no mistake, there are dramatic moments in "The Way, Way Back," as well as some plot turns that ramp up the emotional investment. But Faxon and Rash manage to pull it off without drinking too deeply from the well of despair that so many writers relish.

What we get is the rare film that manages to be breezy while also being meaningful. "The Way, Way Back" is way, way good -- and a welcome breath of fresh air at the summertime box office.

______

THE WAY, WAY BACK
4 stars, out of 5

Snapshot: A dramatic comedy about an awkward teen who, forced to spend his summer vacation at the beach with his mother and her self-absorbed boyfriend, finds friendship in an unlikely place.

What works: In addition to being well-cast, it is well-written, managing to be breezy and emotionally rewarding at the same time.

What doesn't: The central theme -- awkward kid trying to find his way -- is hardly a fresh one.

Cast: Liam James, Steve Carell, Sam Rockwell, Toni Collette, Allison Janney, AnnaSohpia Robb, Maya Rudolph, Rob Corddry, Amanda Peet. Directors: Nat Faxon, Jim Rash. Rating: PG-13, for thematic elements, language, some sexual content and brief drug material. Running time: 1 hour 43 minutes. Where: Find New Orleans showtimes.

Developing a Strong Business Brand - Branding

Unless you unbiased don?t have an appetite for fried chicken, or you?ve been living in recluse for the past few decades, the phrase ?We do chicken moral? should immediately conjure up the fast-food restaurant, Kentucky Fried Chicken. The reason you wouldn?t consider of Popeye?s, Church?s or Zaxby?s is because that simple tiny tagline helped to build the KFC mark.

As an entrepreneur, it is valuable that you pay attention to branding as you get your business, preferably as a start-up. Your effect says a lot about you and your business. It is mighty more than your logo, business cards and stationary. Creating a strong stamp can benefit spot you apart from the competition and lay the accurate foundation for the future growth of your business.

In this article we peep how to execute a strong label. What is branding? Although your logo, graphics and tagline are all a share of your label, the most notable aspect of branding relates to the customer experience associated with the trace. There must be a value-added connection, whether realistic or perceived. When a business delivers on that label it creates a bond of trust, thereby making itself memorable and recognizable. I might be dating myself, but I remember when KFC tried to enter into the business of selling ribs. That didn?t go over very well in the USA!

The questions to hold in mind when developing your label are:

1) Who are I (me and my business)?

2) Why should someone do business with me?

3) How am I different from my competition?

Your mark should consistently communicate what your company does, along with the obvious images, attributes and personality. In developing my notice for Life Treasures LLC, my strategy centered around my mission statement. My goal is to support people gawk the legal value they absorb within (gifts, talents and abilities), passion and calling, and to inspire them to unleash their potential. Out of my mission statement came the business name, products & services, logo and tagline. My tag is also an image of who I am and what I?ve discovered about myself. That authenticity is what I want to inform to my clients in building thriving, value-added relationships now and going forward.

What is your business trace and what does it say about you? Draft the essence of your notice using these points:

· trace Purpose ? a snapshot of what you provide to your target market.

· label Differentiation ? things clear about you that your competitors can?t copy.

· label Personality ? a collection of human-like traits and adjectives that represent your impress.

· effect Promise -the confident expectation you give people to sigh on your purpose.

Creating a strong business price will accomplish your marketing more effective and efficient. Rather than trying to advance up with a different marketing conception for each product or service you provide, your product marketing strategy will be tailored to your business imprint. You won?t be confronted with a conflict of having an image of ribs with a tagline, ?We do chicken correct!?

Former brokers in UK court on Libor fraud charges

By Tommy Wilkes

LONDON (Reuters) - Two former brokers, who appeared in court on Friday on fraud charges, conspired with employees at UBS, HSBC , Rabobank, Citi and Tullett Prebon to manipulate Libor rates, UK prosecutors alleged in court documents.

Terry Farr, 41, and 48-year old James Gilmour, former staff at UK interbroker dealer RP Martin, are accused of conspiracy to defraud along with former Citi and UBS trader Tom Hayes.

The two men, arrested last December alongside Hayes, are the first brokers to face criminal action in connection with a global investigation into the Libor interest rate rigging scandal.

A central cog in the world financial system, the London interbank offered rate (Libor) is used as a price reference for hundreds of trillions of dollars worth of contracts, ranging from complex derivatives to everyday credit card bills.

The scandal has sparked public and political outrage and laid bare the failure of authorities and bank bosses to spot the manipulation.

So far, regulators have fined Britain's Barclays , Switzerland's UBS and Royal Bank of Scotland a total of $2.6 billion and prosecutors have charged four men.

Hayes, Gilmour and Farr are the first to face court. The fourth suspect, Roger Darin, was charged by U.S. prosecutors last December. He is currently in Switzerland.

The case against the two men, who both live in the southeastern English county of Essex, will increase scrutiny of the role played in the scandal by interdealer brokers, who act as middlemen between the buyers and sellers of financial securities such as bonds, currencies or interest rate swaps.

Farr, dressed in a dark suit and tie, and Gilmour, dressed in an open neck white shirt, sat in the dock in London's Westminster Magistrates Court and spoke only to confirm their names and addresses and their bail conditions.

The two were granted bail until July 30, when their case will be transferred for a hearing to the higher Southwark Crown Court. They were told not to contact each other or Hayes, and they gave no indication of how they would plead.

Citi and UBS declined to comment. HSBC, Tullett Prebon and Rabobank did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Employers won't pay more to maintain workers' comp insurance ...

The purpose of workers' compensation laws is to ensure that employees who are injured on the job receive compensation for their injuries without having to litigate with their employers. Every business is required to carry some form of workers' compensation. The Rhode Island Department of Labor and Training is helping to ensure that businesses carry workers' compensation insurance by refusing to add additional costs for businesses in maintaining insurance on their employees.

According to the department, the rate for workers' compensation insurers has remained at 6.75 percent since 2008,and it is mirroring the state governor's efforts at making Rhode Island a more employer-friendly environment. The Department's yearly assessment is used to fund the operations of the workers' compensation court, workers' compensation education unit, workers' compensation fraud unit, the advisory council and other costs of Rhode Island's workers' compensation program.

Rhode Island residents should be aware that workers' compensation is usually a substitute for a civil suit against the employer. This gives employees the benefit of workers' comp while protecting the employer from many lawsuits.

Someone may file a workers' compensation claim for a work related injury that aggravates a preexisting condition or causes a disease such as lung cancer. Someone injured on the job may also be able to recover for injuries that result from mental and physical strain caused by work related stress. Someone who develops a disabling mental condition due to harassment by a supervisor or because of job demands may also be entitled to compensation. An injured employee may also recover for injuries that occur during lunch hours, breaks or work related activities.

We're Still Crying Over The Red Wedding

SAN DIEGO ? It's wasn't hard for "Game of Thrones" to say goodbye to several characters at Comic-Con.

The panel for the fantasy HBO series kicked off Friday with an "in memoriam" segment set to Boyz II Men's "It's So Hard to Say Goodbye to Yesterday."

The tribute was dedicated to the scads of characters who've bitten the dust on the show, ranging from Khal Drogo to Wine Merchant to Catelyn Stark, the character played by Michelle Fairley who died in the infamous "Red Wedding" installment.

"I knew how many years I signed for, so I knew what was coming," said Fairley at the pop-culture convention.

The vicious slayings of many Westeros residents in the third season surprised many viewers, especially the brutal "Red Wedding" episode.

"We'd been waiting for it for so long and dreading it, and having it turn out better than we expected because of these actors was one of the greatest moments of my life," series co-creator David Benioff said.

"Game of Thrones" cast members Fairley, Peter Dinklage, John Bradley, Kit Harrington, Rose Leslie, Richard Madden and Emilia Clarke joined "A Song of Fire and Ice" mastermind George R.R. Martin and series co-creators Benioff and D.B. Weiss.

Martin said he needed to get to work finishing the two upcoming novels, "The Winds of Winter" and "A Dream of Spring," because the show is catching up with source material.

The crowd inside Hall H in the San Diego Convention Center shrieked when Khal Drago actor Jason Momoa stomped on stage and planted a smooch on Clarke, who continues to play his love interest Daenerys Targaryen, the Mother of Dragons, on the show.

Momoa screamed into the microphone, "I'm not dead, George!"

Joe Dirt, Anthony Pettis and more: Where did they fall on Cagewriter?s Hot or Not List?

Happy Friday, Cagereaders. Let's take a look at who has had a good week and who hasn't.

Hot -- Joe Dirt, apparently: UFC president Dana White was hanging out with actor David Spade and UFC women's bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey on Thursday night. White is a big fan of "Meet Joe Dirt" and Spade, and he will not hear otherwise.

Not -- UFC 163: The Brazilian event headlined by Jose Aldo's championship bout with Chan Sung Jung was hit with injury again. Clint Hester, from the latest season of "The Ultimate Fighter," pulled out of his bout with Cezar Ferreira because of a rib injury. Phil Harris is out because of a broken orbital bone. Robert Drysdale also had to pull out because of a staph infection. This is the same card Anthony Pettis had to pull out of. Speaking of ...

Hot -- Anthony Pettis: He wanted a title shot against Benson Henderson. Because of T.J. Grant's injury, Pettis is getting that title shot. Not only will he fight for the title, he will do it in his hometown of Milwaukee.

Hot -- Fighter bonuses: When some fighters complained about their pay, UFC president Dana White threatened to take fight night bonuses off the table. This week, he pulled back on the threat.

Still taking temperature -- Cagereaders: This is a rare weekend. There are no UFC, Bellator, World Series of Fighting or Invicta bouts this weekend. It's the summer. Go outside and enjoy it. If your part of the world is being hit by a heat wave, drink water and stay safe. We'll have plenty to talk about next week with UFC on Fox 8.

FIFA sets 2014 World Cup ticket prices in Brazil

SAO PAULO (AP) ? Fans will pay $90 for tickets to see World Cup matches in Brazil next year, $10 more than in 2010 in South Africa.

Announcing ticket rates Friday, FIFA said $15 seats will be available to Brazilian students, people over 60 and members of social programs. In 2010, South African residents could pay $20.

Host nation residents will have access to at least 400,000 discounted tickets from the publicly available total of about 3 million.

International fans will pay from $440 to $990, in three category bands, to see the final July 13 at the Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro.

FIFA said prices start at $220 for the opening match in Sao Paulo on June 12. Top category seats will cost $495.

At the other 47 group-stage matches, seats costs $90 in the cheapest Category 3 band. Category 1 tickets will cost $175.

Prices for international fans are about 10 percent more than four years ago in South Africa.

The concessions to Brazilians were stipulated in a so-called World Cup bill approved last year by the Brazilian Congress. Portions of the bill ? parts that grant FIFA certain tax concessions ? have been called unconstitutional and are being appealed to the country's supreme court.

"The ticketing strategy shows important achievements that Brazil has obtained, which were included in the World Cup law," Deputy Sports Minister Luis Fernandes said at the ticket announcement.

Despite the discounts, the prices are out of reach for most people in Brazil, where the average official minimum monthly salary is about $340.

Brazil will spend about $14 billion on next year's World Cup. The price tag was a focus of violent street protests that took place during the Confederation Cup last month, the warm-up event for the World Cup.

The protests have continued with complaints about poor schools, hospitals and public services contrasted with the lavish spending on the World Cup ? and an equal amount on the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

Tickets for the World Cup will be sold globally from Aug. 20 on fifa.com. The first sales phase ends Oct. 10, and a random draw will allocate seats for oversubscribed matches.

A second sales phase opens Dec. 8, after the 32-team draw is made and the match schedule confirmed. FIFA said buyers can request a maximum of four seats per match and a maximum of seven matches.

FIFA said an additional 450,000 tickets have been reserved for a corporate client program, which FIFA licensed to MATCH Hospitality for $120 million.

The total number of available tickets will not be finalized until the 12 stadiums are completed, FIFA said.

FIFA marketing director Thierry Weil called on Brazilian authorities to have all 12 World Cup stadiums ready by a Dec. 31 deadline set by FIFA. Four of the six stadiums used for the Confederations Cup were late being delivered, causing ticketing confusion with some fans entering with tickets ? only to find no corresponding seats, Weil said.

"We need the stadiums in time for the World Cup to be ready and to be prepared," he said.

He also said ticket pickup locations would be available at the airports in all 12 host cities.

Air travel will be the main way to get around the continent-size country. Many of Brazil's airports are outdated ? notably those in Rio and Sao Paulo ? with domestic connections expensive and difficult to make.

"For the World Cup, what we need to do is, we need to have ticket centers in the right locations," Weil said.

Update Galaxy Grand I9082 to Official Jelly Bean 4.2.2 XXUBMF2 OS

Even though the official Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean OTA update isn?t yet available for the Samsung Galaxy Grand I9082, a leaked version of the firmware has been provided. So, if you want to test the stock JB 4.2.2 OS on your Galaxy Grand before the official release, then flash the XXUBMF2 software on your smartphone. By using this tutorial you will learn how to manually install the leaked firmware on your phone, so you will still get the official Android OS, not a custom ROM based on the same.

Since you will update your Galaxy Grand with the official, though just leaked, Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean software, you will not have to deal with a complex flashing operation. That?s why, for this step by step guide a rooted device isn?t required. The steps from below are compatible with both rooted and un-rooted smartphones, so you have nothing to worry about. Of course, if your Grand has been unchained or installed with a custom ROM, now by updating to stock JB 4.2.2 XXUBMF2 OS you will revoke the root access, restore the warranty and re-flash the default variant of the Android system.

The new Jelly Bean 4.2.2 firmware comes with new features, apps, capabilities and bug fixes, the XXUBMF2 software being stable and smoothly running on the Samsung Galaxy Grand model number I9082. The same OS will be official released and rolled out by Samsung for your Grand during the upcoming days ? or weeks if you are unlucky, so by completing this tutorial you will be with one step ahead Samsung and Google.

For safely completing this update operation you will use Odin which is an official tool developed and offered by Samsung. The app is being used for updating and rooting procedures, so your phone will be safe. But in order to avoid the unpleasant situations, before heading to the steps from below, complete the pre requisites.

  • Use a Windows running computer because Odin can be installed only on the same.
  • Ensure that your phone?s USB cable is near you as you will have to connect your device with the computer.
  • On the computer the Galaxy Grand drivers must be installed. You can use Samsung KIES for flashing the drivers.
  • On your computer there shouldn?t be any security tools installed; deactivate the security protection if you want to successfully complete this guide.
  • Enable the USB debugging option on your handset for being able to connect your device with the PC; for USB debugging go to: ?Settings -> Applications -> Development -> USB debugging?.
  • If on your phone you notice that there is less than 60% power left, it is recommended to plug in the charger before heading to the update operation.

Also, as a recommendation, a backup should be applied. In case, during the update operation, Odin gets stuck, or if your Galaxy Grand will get stuck in a boot loop, you will have to wipe the system. Therefore, for saving your data, personal info and accounts, choose to backup the Grand data first.

Finally, you are prepared to start the flashing procedure. Just make sure that you are applying the official Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean XXUBMF2 firmware on the Samsung Galaxy Grand model number I9082 because the present step by step guide is compatible only with the mentioned smartphone.

  1. Remember to install the Galaxy Grand drivers on the computer.
  2. On the same computer download and install Odin.
  3. Furthermore, from here download the update package.
  4. Unzip the firmware file and run Odin on your computer.
  5. Now, turn off your handset.
  6. Reboot it in download mode.
  7. The Galaxy Grand can be rebooted in download mode by: pressing and holding at the same time the Power, Volume Down and Home buttons.
  8. With the phone in download mode, use the USB cable and connect the device with your computer.
  9. Then, on Odin you should notice: the ?added? message displayed and the ID:COM section that should be yellow or blue.
  10. If not, it means Odin didn?t recognize your Galaxy Grand, so you should reinstall the drivers on your computer once more.
  11. From Odin select ?PDA? and pick the software file.
  12. Then, click on ?start? without making any other changes on Odin ? the re-partition section should remain unchecked.
  13. When the update process will be completed on Odin you will see the ?pass? message displayed.
  14. You should unplug the USB cable and reboot your handset.

Troubleshooting

First, Odin might get stuck while you are triyng to apply the ROM; in that case:

  • Close Odin.
  • Disconnect the devices.
  • Force-restart your smartphone.
  • Reinstall the drivers on your computer.
  • Run Odin.
  • Reboot your phone in download mode and connect it with the computer.
  • Follow the update operation from above.

Then, your Galaxy Grand might get stuck in a boot loop; you can resolve this problem by following:

  • Reboot your phone in recovery mode.
  • For recovery mode: press and hold Volume Up, Power and Home buttons at the same time.
  • From recovery select ?wipe data factory reset? and ?wipe cache partition?.
  • Return to recovery (select ?+++go back+++?) and select ?reboot system now?.

For any other problem check this step by step guide ? you will be able to learn how to resolve the most common Android issues.

Congratulations you have updated your Samsung Galaxy Grand smartphone with the leaked and official Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean XXUBMF2 firmware. Test the software and share your impressions and experience with our team and with other users who might want to use our tutorial.

NCAA to stop putting name, logo on video game

NEW YORK (AP) ? The NCAA said Wednesday it won't allow Electronic Arts Inc. to use its logo and name in video games while it fights a lawsuit that says the governing body owes billions of dollars to former players for allowing their likenesses to be used for free.

The NCAA said it won't enter into a new contract with EA Sports beyond the current one that expires June 2014. That means NCAA Football 2014 will be the last edition of the popular game. However, it won't necessarily stop EA Sports from producing a college football video game depicting powerhouse schools such as Alabama, Ohio State and Oregon.

"Member colleges and universities license their own trademarks and other intellectual property for the video game," the NCAA said in a statement. "They will have to independently decide whether to continue those business arrangements in the future."

The NCAA is in the midst of a long legal battle that started with a lawsuit filed by former UCLA basketball star Ed O'Bannon.

The suit has expanded to include several former athletes who claim the NCAA and EA Sports have used their names and likenesses without compensation and demand the NCAA find a way to give players a cut of the billions of dollars earned from live broadcasts, memorabilia sales and video games.

"We are confident in our legal position regarding the use of our trademarks in video games," the NCAA said. "But given the current business climate and costs of litigation, we determined participating in this game is not in the best interests of the NCAA.

Re my previous topic here, "How can I find out what my Computer is doing", I bought a registry cleaner, PC Tuneup by Comodo, now I find it has not only failed to fix about 273 of the 290 problems it claimed my computer has, but it has also removed my Taskbar and startup menu on Windows XP, all it does is load a "my Documents"box instead from which I have to access everything.

Anybody know how I can restore my Taskbar?
System restore didnt get it back, the taskbar icon wont open up in control panel.

"Win key" is that the key next to Ctrl with a circular depression and a Window Icon on it?

I tried pressing that and R at the same time, tried one after the other, tried the other win key, nothing happens?

Apple to probe death of woman who used iPhone while it was charging

SINGAPORE - Apple (AAPL) is investigating an accident in which a Chinese woman was killed by an electric shock when answering a call on her iPhone 5 while it was charging, the U.S. technology company said Monday.

Last Thursday, Ma Ailun, a 23-year-old woman from China's western Xinjiang region and a flight attendant with China Southern Airlines, was electrocuted when she took a call on the charging mobile telephone, the official Xinhua news agency quoted police as saying on Sunday.

"We are deeply saddened to learn of this tragic incident and offer our condolences to the Ma family. We will fully investigate and cooperate with authorities in this matter," Apple said in an e-mail.

Apple declined to comment on details, such as whether this was an isolated case.

Ma's sister tweeted on Sina's microblog saying that Ma collapsed and died after using her charging iPhone 5 and urged users to be careful, a message that went viral on the site.

In April, Apple apologized to Chinese consumers and altered iPhone warranty policies in its second-biggest market after its after-sales service suffered more more than two weeks of condemnation by the state-run media.

Weidner Center to announce 2013-14 Performing Arts Season ...

Posted in:? News, Press Releases
Posted by: Kelly McBride ?|? July 15, 2013 ?-? 9:19 am

The Weidner Center for the Performing Arts at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay will announce its 2013-14 Performing Arts Season lineup during a special event for patrons, friends and the campus community at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 17 on the Weidner Center mainstage.

The 21-show, 24-performance season is described as offering a wide variety of titles designed to appeal to audiences of all kinds. Weidner officials responsible for programing the series ? which includes Broadway, comedy, dance, family entertainment and more ? say they expect the lineup to appeal to longtime Weidner audiences and less familiar newcomers alike. The season?s first title has been announced, with comedienne, author and Emmy winner Kathy Griffin set to present ?An Evening with Kathy Griffin? at 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 12.

?We are thrilled to announce the 2013-14 Performing Arts Season, a lineup of shows that builds upon the success of the first year of our five-year revitalization plan,? said Weidner Center Executive Director Kate Green. ?Once again, this season offers something for everyone, including wildly popular touring productions and the finest in Broadway, comedy, music and more. Community input remains paramount in all we do, and this season reflects that. We?re so excited to share it, and to prepare for another terrific year.?

The lineup announcement comes on the heels of a successful inaugural season of UW-Green Bay?s five-year Strategic Plan to reinvigorate its signature performing arts venue. UW-Green Bay Chancellor Tom Harden in late 2011 outlined tentative budgetary and staffing structures for the Weidner Center, part of a comprehensive plan for the venue?s future. That plan has four primary goals: enhancing the Weidner?s Performing Arts Series (traditionally referred to as ?mainstage? programming); increasing access to the venue for faculty, staff and students; providing more opportunities for various community groups; and continuing an emphasis on K-12 educational programing. The Weidner in May announced its 2013-14 Stage Doors Education Series, a collection of 10 titles and 19 performances that provide learning opportunities for students throughout Wisconsin and Upper Michigan.

Building on the success of a successful 2013-14 Performing Arts Season that included 16 shows and 18 performances, the Weidner has continued to build pathways for its future. In August 2012, Kate Green was named executive director of the Weidner Center, following a nationwide search. Part of an identified priority to increase staffing levels, the position was restored after being shelved in 2005, when UW-Green Bay stepped back from being the venue?s primary programmer. The Weidner Center currently is conducting a nationwide search for a director of marketing, a crucial position that will help bolster revitalization efforts as the Strategic Plan continues to move forward.

UW-Green Bay worked with an outside consultant and numerous stakeholder groups to establish a sustainable plan for the Weidner Center?s future. Individuals from those groups will be among those in attendance during the July 17 season lineup announcement, for which invitations were sent earlier this spring. Members of the news media are invited to attend and cover the event. A news embargo on the lineup will be lifted as soon as it is announced during the event, and the full schedule will be posted online at www.WeidnerCenter.com by 7 p.m.

The Weidner Center for the Performing Arts, located near the center of UW-Green Bay?s bayshore campus on the northeast side of the city of Green Bay, is known for its elegant design and the acoustic excellence of its 2,000-seat main hall, Cofrin Family Hall. It also houses two smaller performance spaces, the Fort Howard recital hall and the Jean Weidner Theatre, along with a dance studio and grand foyer. The center is a home for UW-Green Bay music and theatre productions, the Green Bay Symphony, community events and productions, and performances by visiting artists and touring companies.

For more information on the Weidner Center, visit www.WeidnerCenter.com, call 800-895-0071 or 920-465-2726, or follow the venue on Facebook (www.facebook.com/pages/Weidner-Center-for-the-Performing-Arts/15015305278) and Twitter (@WeidnerCenter).

OS X Mavericks Preview: OS X Server - friend to Macs, iOS devices

OS X Mavericks Preview: OS X Server is a friend to Macs, iOS devices

In all that's been written or said about OS X Mavericks, precious few words have been saved for OS X Server, which, of course, is getting the Mavericks treatment too. Let's take a look at some of the enhancements coming to OS X Server when Mavericks bows this fall.

OS X Server, using the same underpinnings as OS X, provides server-strength file sharing capabilities, database publication (including contact and calendar functionality), live video streaming, e-mail service, wiki and Web site publication, iOS device management, and more. It includes powerful open source software like Python, a popular scripting language, PostgreSQL for Structured Query Language (SQL) database support, and Apache, a popular open-source web server.

Apple's senior vice president of Software Engineering, Craig Federighi, offered nary a word about OS X Server during his keynote presentation introducing Mavericks at Apple's Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) in San Francisco last month. Should you infer from that a disinterest in server software coming from Apple's senior management? No. In fact, the opposite is true. They're very interested in seeing OS X Server do well, because it's crucial to the entire Apple ecosystem.

Working hand-in-hand with OS X on desktop and laptop Macs

The history of Macs as servers is almost as long as the Mac itself. Apple has sold server products for years - even in the pre-OS X "Classic" Mac OS days. Up until fairly recently, however, OS X Server remained the rarified domain of corporate IT departments. In January, 2011 Apple discontinued its rack-mountable server product, the Xserve, and IT jocks (and analysts) panicked - it seemed like Apple was pulling up stakes out of the enterprise space all together.

How wrong we were.

Turns out the Mac mini has had smashing success as a server, for the lucrative Small to Medium Business (SMB) market and also as a workgroup server for small to medium-sized groups of employees in corporate environments. The diminutive laptop is available in a server-specific configuration with two internal 1TB hard disk drives for $999. But you can install OS X Server on any Mac you might have lying around that's running up-to-date operating system software.

That's because Apple also radically changed the way it sold OS X Server.

As recently as Apple's release of Snow Leopard, Mac OS X v10.6, the company sold Snow Leopard Server separately from the "regular" operating system. $499 netted you a single server installation with support for unlimited users.

An incredible value

Now OS X Server is actually included with the regular operating system. You can buy a server management application for $19.99 as a download through the Mac App Store.

That's not changing with OS X Mavericks - you'll still be able to buy a separate management app through the Mac App Store. Apple continues to build the core capabilities into the regular consumer operating system.

Here's what Apple has to say about OS X Server in Mavericks:

OS X Server includes a number of innovations that will help the people who use your network as well as the people who manage it. The new features in Xcode Server make it easier than ever for a Mac or iOS development team to create robust, reliable software, thanks to continuous integration, testing, and repository hosting services. Caching Server 2 speeds up the download and delivery of software through the App Store, Mac App Store, and iTunes Store, and it can now cache on your server for faster downloading to iOS 7 devices. And Profile Manager has an array of new management features for iOS 7 and OS X Mavericks that simplify software distribution of apps and books.

A friend to iOS devices as well

In other words, OS X Server in Mavericks is pretty much going to be a continuation of what we've seen - enhancements, rather than a major upheaval, designed to facilitate better workgroup communication in areas where OS X Server is really useful - teams of programmers working together on projects in Xcode, Apple's development environment for OS X and iOS applications alike, for example. Or businesses that are leveraging iOS devices like the iPhone and iPad among their employees, whether it's standard-issue policy or Bring Your Own Device (BYOD). Caching Server 2 promises to reduce wasted employee time by hastening the speed at which OS X Server will download content from iTunes, the Mac App Store or the App Store for iOS.

But don't think OS X Server is only good for Macs, iPads and iPhones. It's built on the same open standards and proven technology as the rest of OS X. It is OS X. It's a good corporate citizen that plays well with Windows PCs, Linux boxes and other various and sundry computing devices, too.

Some pundits and analysts erroneously think that Apple doesn't care about the enterprise space - those blowhards don't see Apple selling server hardware to compete with Dell, IBM and other companies, and assume the company is MIA. Nothing is further from the truth - Apple's been here all along. It's just that they have a very different handle on the market than most of the other companies in enterprise computing do. $20 gets you everything you need to get OS X Server off the ground. Compare that with the costs of server racks and blade systems and specialized server software used in other venues. It's a remarkable difference.

Are you in IT? Do you depend on OS X Server either as a user or an administrator? Or is this all rubbish that you don't care about? Talk to me in the comments, please, I'd love to hear from you. And please follow these links to find out more about OS X Mavericks or to have a conversation with other users about what features you're looking forward to most.

Acer Aspire P3-171-6820

The Acer Aspire P3-171-6820 is a cleverly designed hybrid/convertible tablet featuring a ten-point touch-screen, an ultra-low voltage Core i5 processor, a Bluetooth keyboard case, and a 120GB solid state drive. The keyboard comes in handy for those times when only a keyboard will do, but it doesn't do a very good job of supporting the tablet and it doesn't have a touchpad. Priced at just under $900 (list) it is relatively affordable as far as hybrid go, but it can't match the performance of similarly priced hybrids, including our current Editors' Choice, the Microsoft Surface Windows 8 Pro.

Design and Features
The P3-171-6820 is wrapped in a sleek brushed silver aluminum chassis that weighs 1.7 pounds and measures 11.6-by-7.5 -by-0.04 inches (HWD). A micro-HDMI port and a full-size USB 3.0 port share space on the left side of the tablet with a microphone, rest button, and the power jack. On the right side are a headphone/speaker jack, the power button, a battery status indicator, and a volume key. There are two air vents on the top, a rear-facing five-megapixel camera on the back, and a 720p HD camera embedded at the top of the screen.

There are two small speakers embedded in the bottom of the tablet. Combined with Dolby Home Theater software they deliver a much bigger sound than their size would indicate, although bass response is non-existent. Missing is a card reader slot.

The 11.6-inch glossy screen has a maximum resolution of 1,366-by-768, which is disappointing as it can't display video in full (1080p) high-definition like the Microsoft Surface Pro and the Samsung ATIV SmartPC Pro 700T (XE700T1C-A01US). However, it does a good job with 720p content, delivering rich colors, sharp imagery, and good viewing angles. The screen uses 10-point touch technology, which provides effortless and accurate swiping, gesturing, pinching, and zooming.

Unlike the Sony VAIO Duo 11 (D11213CX) and Samsung 700T, the Aspire P3's keyboard is detached and stays that way as it uses Bluetooth technology to communicate with the tablet. Simply snap the tablet into the keyboard case, press the power button on the upper part of the keyboard deck, slide the screen into the groove above the keyboard, and you're ready to type. Be careful, though; the tablet doesn't sit very snug in the groove and can be knocked loose with slight pressure to the top of the screen.

Typing is relatively comfortable but those with big hands may feel a bit cramped. There's no room for a touchpad here either, but there is a mini-USB port on the upper left side. The black textured keyboard case adds 0.78-inch to the P3-171-6820's overall thickness and 1.32-pounds to the overall weight.

The 120GB drive comes loaded with Windows 8 and the usual assortment of apps including Skype, Amazon Kindle, Netflix, and trail versions of MS Office and McAfee Internet Security Suite. There's also eShopping, eReading, and iCookbook programs, as well as Acer Cloud and Nero Backitup software.

Rounding out the feature set are Wi-Fi a/b/g/n and Bluetooth 4.0 radios, a mini-USB to full-sized USB adapter (for use with the keyboard), and a micro-HDMI to VGA video dongle. Acer covers the P3 with a standard one-year warranty.

Performance
Acer Aspire P3-171-6820 The Aspire P3 is powered by a 1.5GHz Intel Core i5-3339Y processor, 4 GBs of memory, and Intel's integrated HD Graphics 4000 GPU. It's score of 3,750 trailed the Surface Pro (4,768) by more than 1,000 points and the Samsung SmartPC Pro 700T by around 700 points. The P3 came in last on our Cinebench R11.5 CPU test with a score of 1.80 while the Surface Pro scored a 2.39.

Acer Aspire P3-171-6820

Multimedia performance was similar; the Aspire P3's Photoshop (8:25) and Handbrake (2:01) encoding times were significantly longer than the Microsoft Surface Pro (6:11 and 1:28, respectively), while the Core i7-fueled Asus Transformer Book TX300C led the pack.

Most tablets come up short when it comes to gaming and the Aspire P3 is no different. It managed a paltry 8 fps on our medium quality Alien vs. Predator test and 7 fps on our medium quality Heaven benchmark test. On the plus side, video played smoothly without any sign of chop or stutter.

The Aspire P3's 4-cell lithium-ion battery lasted 5 hours 11 minutes on our battery rundown test. That's right up there with the Samsung ATIV Smart PC Pro (5:12) and a bit longer than the Dell XPS 12 (5:09), the Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga 13 (5:00), and Microsoft Surface Pro (4:58). The Asus TX300C held onto its lead with a battery time of 7:35, but it needed two batteries to do so. Without the help of the secondary keyboard case battery, the Transformer Book lasted 4:47.

With the Acer Aspire P3-171-6820 you get a tablet and an Ultrabook in one slim, affordable package. Its 10-point touch-screen is ideal for swiping your way through Windows 8 apps, and you'll never have to worry about reattaching the Bluetooth keyboard (but you may want to take care not to knock the tablet off its perch while typing). Its battery provided over five hours of unplugged computing power, but when it came to performance, it couldn't keep pace with the competition. If you can spare an extra $100, the Editors' Choice Microsoft Surface Windows 8 Pro offers better performance as well as a 1,920-by-1,080 screen, a digitizer pen, an SDXC card reader, and a slightly bigger solid-state drive.

S Korea enforces smartphone app to curb military leaks

Korea (/k??ri??/ k?-REE-?; Korean: ?? Hanguk [han?u?k] or ?? Joseon [t?os?n] ? (see etymology) is an East Asian region that is divided into two separate sovereign states ? North Korea and South Korea. Located on the Korean Peninsula, Korea is bordered by China to the northwest, Russia to the northeast, and is separated from Japan to the east by the Korea Strait and the Sea of Japan (East Sea), and separated from Taiwan to the south by the East China Sea.

Archaeological and linguistic evidence suggest the origins of the Korean people might have been Altaic language-speaking people from south-central Siberia,[dubious ][4] who populated ancient Korea in successive waves from the Neolithic age to the Bronze Age.[5] The adoption of the Chinese writing system ("Hanja" in Korean) in the 2nd century BC, and Buddhism in the 4th century AD, had profound effects on the Three Kingdoms of Korea.

The Three Kingdoms of Korea was first united during the Silla dynasty under the king Munmu of Silla. The united Silla dynasty fell to Goryeo Dynasty in 935 at the end of Later Three Kingdoms of Korea era. Goryeo was a highly cultural state and created the Jikji in the 14th century, using the world's first movable metal type printing press. The Mongol invasions in the 13th century, however, greatly weakened the nation which was forced to become a tributary state. After the Mongol Empire's collapse, severe political strife followed and Goryeo was replaced by the Joseon Dynasty in 1388.

The first 200 years of Joseon were marked by relative peace and saw the creation of the Korean alphabet Hangul by King Sejong the Great in the 14th century and the rise in influence of Confucianism in the country. During the latter part of the dynasty, however, Korea's isolationist policy earned it the Western nickname the "Hermit kingdom". By the late 19th century, the country became the object of the colonial designs of Japan. In 1910, Korea was invaded by Japan and remained occupied until the end of World War II in August 1945.

In 1945, the Soviet Union and the United States agreed on the surrender of Japanese forces in Korea and Soviet troops occupied north of the 38th parallel, while U.S. troops took surrender south of it. This decision by allied armies soon became the basis for the division of Korea by the two superpowers, exacerbated by their inability to agree on the terms of Korean independence. The two Cold War rivals then established governments sympathetic to their own ideologies, leading to Korea's current division into two political entities: North Korea and South Korea. The ensuing conflict between the two was largely a proxy war.

North Korea, officially the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, is a single-party state with a centrally planned industrial economy. South Korea, officially the Republic of Korea, is a free market, democratic, and developed country with membership in the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and the Group of Twenty.

Main article: Names of Korea

"Korea" derives from the Goryeo period of Korean history, which in turn referred to the ancient kingdom of Goguryeo, the first Korean dynasty visited by Persian merchants who referred to Kory? (Goryeo) (??) as Korea.[6] Kory? (Goryeo) is also the name of Goguryeo, which changed its name to Kory? (Goryeo) in the 5th century (during the reign of King Jangsu of Goguryeo). Korea is now commonly used in English contexts by both North and South Korea. In the Korean language, Korea as a whole is referred to as Han-guk (??) in South Korea, and Chos?n (??) in North Korea. The latter name, also Romanised Joseon, is from the Joseon Dynasty and the earlier Gojoseon. "The Land of the Morning Calm" is an English language title for the country loosely derived from the hanja characters for Joseon.

Prehistory and Gojoseon[link]

The Korean Academy of North America discovered ancient hominid fossils originating from about 100,000 BC in the lava at a stone city site in Korea. Fluorescent and high-magnetic analyses indicate the volcanic fossils may be from as early as 300,000 BC.[7] The best preserved Korean pottery goes back to the paleolithic times around 10,000 BC, and the Neolithic period begins around 6000 BC.

Gojoseon's founding legend describes Dangun, a descendent of heaven, as establishing the kingdom in 2333 BC[8] until the fall in 108 BC, although no evidence has been found that supports whatever facts may lie beneath this myth.[9]

The original capital may have been at the Manchuria-Korea border,[10] but was later moved to what is today Pyongyang, North Korea. In 108 BC, the Chinese Han Dynasty defeated Wiman Joseon and installed the Four Commanderies of Han in the area of the northwestern Korean Peninsula and part of the Liaodong Peninsula,[11] leaving many smaller kingdoms and confederacies in the southern and eastern parts of the peninsula. By 75 BC, three of those commanderies had fallen, but the Lelang Commandery remained as a center of cultural and economic exchange with successive Chinese dynasties until 313, when it fell to Goguryeo.

Proto?Three Kingdoms[link]

The Proto?Three Kingdoms period, sometimes called the Several States Period, is the earlier part of what is commonly called the Three Kingdoms Period, following the fall of Gojoseon but before Goguryeo, Baekje, and Silla fully developed into kingdoms.

This time period saw numerous states spring up from the former territories of Gojoseon. Buyeo arose in today's North Korea and southern Manchuria, from about the 2nd century BC to 494. Its remnants were absorbed by Goguryeo in 494, and both Goguryeo and Baekje, two of the Three Kingdoms of Korea, considered themselves its successor. Okjeo and Dongye of northern Korea were eventually absorbed into the growing Goguryeo.

Located in the southern part of the Korean Peninsula, Samhan refers to the three confederacies of Mahan, Jinhan, and Byeonhan. Mahan was the largest and consisted of 54 states. Byeonhan and Jinhan both consisted of twelve states, bringing a total of 78 states within the Samhan. These three confederacies eventually developed into Baekje, Silla, and Gaya.

Three Kingdoms[link]

The Three Kingdoms of Korea (Goguryeo, Silla, and Baekje) dominated the peninsula and parts of Manchuria at beginning of the 1st century AD. They competed with each other both economically and militarily.

Goguryeo united Buyeo, Okjeo, Dongye and other states in the former Gojoseon territory.[12] Goguryeo was the most dominant power; it reached its zenith in the 5th century, when reign of the Gwanggaeto the Great and his son, Jangsu expanded territory into almost all of Manchuria and part of inner Mongolia, and took the Seoul region from Baekje. Gwanggaeto and Jangsu subdued Baekje and Silla during their times. After the 7th century, Goguryeo was constantly at war with the Sui and Tang dynasties of China.

Founded around modern day Seoul, the southwestern kingdom Baekje expanded far beyond Pyongyang during the peak of its powers in the 4th century. It had absorbed all of the Mahan states and subjugated most of the western Korean peninsula (including the modern provinces of Gyeonggi, Chungcheong, and Jeolla, as well as part of Hwanghae and Gangwon) to a centralised government. Baekje acquired Chinese culture and technology through contacts with the Southern Dynasties during the expansion of its territory. Historic evidence suggests that Japanese culture, art, and language was strongly influenced by the kingdom of Baekje and Korea itself.[13][14][15][16][17][18][19][20][21][21][22]

Although later records claim that Silla, in the southeast, was the oldest of the three kingdoms, it is now believed to have been the last kingdom to develop. By the 2nd century, Silla existed as a large state, occupying and influencing nearby city states. Silla began to gain power when it annexed the Gaya confederacy in AD 562. The Gaya confederacy was located between Baekje and Silla. The three kingdoms of Korea often warred with each other and Silla often faced pressure from Baekje and Goguryeo but at various times Silla also allied with Baekje and Goguryeo in order to gain dominance over the peninsula.

In 660, King Muyeol of Silla ordered his armies to attack Baekje. General Kim Yu-shin (Gim Yu-sin), aided by Tang forces, conquered Baekje. In 661, Silla and Tang moved on Goguryeo but were repelled. King Munmu, son of Muyeol and nephew of General Kim launched another campaign in 667 and Goguryeo fell in the following year.

North-South States Period[link]

In the 5th, 6th, and 7th centuries, Silla's power gradually extended across the Korean Peninsula. Silla first annexed the adjacent Gaya confederacy. By the 660s, Silla formed an alliance with the Tang Dynasty of China to conquer Baekje and later Goguryeo. After repelling Chinese forces, Silla partially unified the Peninsula, beginning a period often called Unified Silla.

In the north, former Goguryeo General Dae Joyeong led a group of Goguryeo refugees to the Jilin area in Manchuria and founded Balhae (698 - 926) as the successor to Goguryeo. At its height, Balhae's territory extended from northern Manchuria down to the northern provinces of modern-day Korea. Balhae was destroyed by the Khitans in 926.

Unified Silla fell apart in the late 9th century, giving way to the tumultuous Later Three Kingdoms period (892-935). Goryeo unified the Later Three Kingdoms and absorbed Balhae refugees.

Goryeo[link]

The country Goryeo was founded in 918 and replaced Silla as the ruling dynasty of Korea. ("Goryeo" is a short form of "Goguryeo" and the source of the English name "Korea".) The dynasty lasted until 1392.

During this period laws were codified, and a civil service system was introduced. Buddhism flourished, and spread throughout the peninsula. The development of celadon industry flourished in 12th and 13th century. The publication of Tripitaka Koreana onto 80,000 wooden blocks and the invention of the world's first movable-metal-type printing press in 13th century attest to Goryeo's cultural achievements.

Their dynasty was threatened by Mongol invasions from the 1230s into the 1270s, but the dynastic line continued to survive until 1392 since they negotiated a treaty with the Mongols that kept its sovereign power.

In 1350s, King Gongmin was free at last to reform a Goryeo government. Gongmin had various problems that needed to be dealt with, which included the removal of pro-Mongol aristocrats and military officials, the question of land holding, and quelling the growing animosity between the Buddhists and Confucian scholars.

Joseon Dynasty[link]

In 1392, the general Yi Seong-gye established the Joseon Dynasty (1392?1910) with a largely bloodless coup. He named it the Joseon Dynasty in honor of the previous Joseon before (Gojoseon is the first Joseon. "Go", meaning "old", was added to distinguish between the two).

King Taejo moved the capital to Hanseong (formerly Hanyang; modern-day Seoul) and built the Gyeongbokgung palace. In 1394 he adopted Confucianism as the country's official religion, resulting in much loss of power and wealth by the Buddhists. The prevailing philosophy was Neo-Confucianism.

Joseon experienced advances in science and culture. King Sejong the Great (1418?1450) promulgated hangul, the Korean alphabet. The period saw various other cultural and technological advances as well as the dominance of neo-Confucianism over the entire peninsula. Slaves, nobi, are estimated to have accounted for about one third of the population of Joseon Korea.[23]

Between 1592 and 1598, the Japanese invaded Korea. Toyotomi Hideyoshi ordered the forces and tried to invade the Asian continent through Korea, but was completely defeated by a Righteous army, Admiral Yi Sun-sin and assistance from Ming China. This war also saw the rise of the career of Admiral Yi Sun-sin with the "turtle ship". In the 1620s and 1630s Joseon suffered invasions by the Manchu.

After invasions from Manchuria, Joseon experienced a nearly 200-year period of peace. King Yeongjo and King Jeongjo led a new renaissance of the Joseon dynasty.

However, during the last years of the Joseon Dynasty, Korea's isolationist policy earned it the name the "Hermit Kingdom", primarily for protection against Western imperialism before it was forced to open trade beginning an era leading into Japanese colonial rule.

Korean Empire[link]

Main article: Korean Empire

Beginning in the 1870s, Japan began to force Korea out of the Manchu Qing Dynasty's traditional sphere of influence into its own. As a result of the Sino-Japanese War (1894?1895), the Qing Dynasty had to give up such a position according to Article 1 of the Treaty of Shimonoseki, which was concluded between China and Japan in 1895. That same year, Empress Myeongseong was assassinated by Japanese agents.[24]

In 1897, the Joseon dynasty proclaimed the Korean Empire (1897?1910), and King Gojong became Emperor Gojong. This brief period saw the partially successful modernisation of the military, economy, real property laws, education system, and various industries, influenced by the political encroachment into Korea of Russia, Japan, France, and the United States.

In 1904, the Russo-Japanese War pushed the Russians out of the fight for Korea. In Manchuria on October 26, 1909, An Jung-geun assassinated the former Resident-General of Korea, It? Hirobumi for his role in trying to force Korea into occupation.

Japanese occupation[link]

In 1910, an already militarily occupied Korea was a forced party to the Japan-Korea Annexation Treaty. The treaty was signed by Lee Wan-Yong, who was given the General Power of Attorney by the Emperor. However, the Emperor is said to have not actually ratified the treaty according to Yi Tae-jin.[25] There is a long dispute whether this treaty was legal or illegal due to its signing under duress, threat of force and bribes.

Korean resistance to the brutal Japanese occupation[26][27][28] was manifested in the nonviolent March 1st Movement of 1919, where 7,000 demonstrators were killed by Japanese police and military.[29] The Korean liberation movement also spread to neighbouring Manchuria and Siberia.

Over five million Koreans were conscripted for labour beginning in 1939,[30] and tens of thousands of men were forced into Japan's military.[31] Close to 400,000 Korean labourers lost their lives due to the war.[32] Approximately 200,000 girls and women,[33] mostly from China and Korea, were forced into sexual slavery for the Japanese military.[34] In 1993, Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Yohei Kono acknowledged the terrible injustices faced by these euphemistically named "comfort women".[35][36]

During the Japanese Colonial rule, the Korean language was suppressed in an effort to eradicate Korean national identity. Koreans were forced to take Japanese surnames, known as S?shi-kaimei.[37] Traditional Korean culture suffered heavy losses, as numerous Korean cultural artifacts were destroyed[38] or taken to Japan.[39] To this day, valuable Korean artifacts can often be found in Japanese museums or among private collections.[40] One investigation by the South Korean government identified 75,311 cultural assets that were taken from Korea, 34,369 in Japan and 17,803 in the United States. However, experts estimate that over 100,000 artifacts actually remain in Japan.[39][41] Japanese officials considered returning Korean cultural properties, but to date[39] this has not occurred.[41] Korea and Japan still dispute the ownership of the Liancourt Rocks, islets located east of the Korean Peninsula.[42]

There was a significant level of emigration to the overseas territories of the Empire of Japan during the Japanese colonial period, including Korea.[43] By the end of World War II, there were over 850,000 Japanese settlers in Korea.[44] After World War II, most of these overseas Japanese repatriated to Japan.

Korean War[link]

With the surrender of Japan in 1945 the United Nations developed plans for a trusteeship administration, the Soviet Union administering the peninsula north of the 38th parallel and the United States administering the south. The politics of the Cold War resulted in the 1948 establishment of two separate governments, North Korea and South Korea.

In June 1950 North Korea invaded the South, using Soviet tanks and weaponry. During the Korean War (1950?1953) millions of civilians died and the three years of fighting throughout the nation effectively destroyed most cities.[45] Around 125,000 POWs were captured and held by the Americans and South Koreans on Geojedo (an island in the south).[46] The war ended in an Armistice Agreement at approximately the Military Demarcation Line.

Division of Korea[link]

The aftermath of World War II left Korea partitioned along the 38th parallel, with the north under Soviet occupation and the south under the occupation of other allied countries. Consequently, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, a Soviet-style socialist regime, was established in the north while the Republic of Korea, a Western-style republic, was established in the south.[47] The Korean War broke out when Soviet-backed North Korea invaded South Korea, though neither side gained much territory as a result. The Korean Peninsula remains divided, the Korean Demilitarized Zone being the de facto border between the two states.

Since the 1960s, the South Korean economy has grown enormously and the economic structure was radically transformed. In 1957 South Korea had a lower per capita GDP than Ghana,[48] and by 2008 it was 17 times as high as Ghana's.[49]

The North Korean famine began in 1995 and peaked in 1997. According to South Korea intelligence agency, an internal report by North Korea's Public Security Ministry estimates North Korea lost 2.5 million to 3 million lives from 1995 to March 1998.[50]

Tensions continue to this day, but the political arena is a far more complicated one. Recently both China and Russia have expressed concerns over South Korea's provocation of North Korea by carrying out military drills on the island of Yeonpyeong, which itself lies on a disputed sea border between the two countries.[51][52][53]

Korea is located on the Korean Peninsula in North-East Asia. To the northwest, the Amnok River (Yalu River) separates Korea from China and to the northeast, the Duman River (Tumen River) separates Korea from China and Russia. The Yellow Sea is to the west, the East China Sea and Korea Strait is to the south, and the Sea of Japan is to the east.[54] Notable islands include Jeju Island (Jejudo), Ulleung Island (Ulleungdo), and Liancourt Rocks (Dokdo).

The southern and western parts of the peninsula have well-developed plains, while the eastern and northern parts are mountainous. The highest mountain in Korea is Mount Paektu or Paektusan (2,744?m), through which runs the border with China. The southern extension of Mount Paektu is a highland called Gaema Heights. This highland was mainly raised during the Cenozoic orogeny and partly covered by volcanic matter. To the south of Gaema Gowon, successive high mountains are located along the eastern coast of the peninsula. This mountain range is named Baekdudaegan. Some significant mountains include Mount Sobaek or Sobaeksan (1,439?m), Mount Kumgang or Kumgangsan (1,638?m), Mount Seorak or Seoraksan (1,708?m), Mount Taebaek or Taebaeksan (1,567?m), and Mount Jiri or Jirisan (1,915?m). There are several lower, secondary mountain series whose direction is almost perpendicular to that of Baekdudaegan. They are developed along the tectonic line of Mesozoic orogeny and their directions are basically northwest.

Unlike most ancient mountains on the mainland, many important islands in Korea were formed by volcanic activity in the Cenozoic orogeny. Jeju Island, situated off the southern coast, is a large volcanic island whose main mountain Mount Halla or Hallasan (1950?m) is the highest in South Korea. Ulleung Island is a volcanic island in the Sea of Japan, whose composition is more felsic than Jeju-do. The volcanic islands tend to be younger, the more westward.

Because the mountainous region is mostly on the eastern part of the peninsula, the main rivers tend to flow westwards. Two exceptions are the southward-flowing Nakdong River (Nakdonggang) and Seomjin River (Seomjingang). Important rivers running westward include the Amnok River, the Chongchon River (Chongchongang), the Taedong River (Taedonggang), the Han River (Hangang), the Geum River (Geumgang), and the Yeongsan River (Yeongsangang). These rivers have vast flood plains and provide an ideal environment for wet-rice cultivation.

The southern and southwestern coastlines of Korea form a well-developed ria coastline, known as Dadohae-jin in Korean. Its convoluted coastline provides mild seas, and the resulting calm environment allows for safe navigation, fishing, and seaweed farming. In addition to the complex coastline, the western coast of the Korean Peninsula has an extremely high tidal amplitude (at Incheon, around the middle of the western coast. It can get as high as 9?m). Vast tidal flats have been developing on the south and west coastlines.

The combined population of the Koreans is about 73 million (North Korea: 23 million, South Korea: 50 million). Korea is chiefly populated by a highly homogeneous ethnic group, the Koreans, who speak the Korean language.[55] The number of foreigners living in Korea has also steadily increased since the late 20th century, particularly in South Korea, where more than 1 million foreigners currently reside.[56] It is estimated that only 26,700 of the old Chinese community now remain in South Korea.[57] However, in recent years, immigration from mainland China has increased; 624,994 persons of Chinese nationality have immigrated to South Korea, including 443,566 of ethnic Korean descent.[58] Small communities of ethnic Chinese and Japanese are also found in North Korea.[59]

Language[link]

Korean is the official language of both North and South Korea, and (along with Mandarin) of Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture in Manchuria area of China. Worldwide, there are up to 80 million speakers of the Korean language. South Korea has around 50 million speakers while North Korea around 23 million. Other large groups of Korean speakers are found in China (around 1.8 million speakers), the United States (around 900,000 speakers), the former Soviet Union (around 350,000), Japan (around 700,000), Canada (100,000), Malaysia (70,000) and Australia (150,000). It is estimated that there are around 700,000 people scattered across the world who are able to speak Korean because of job requirements (for example, salespersons or businessmen with Korean contacts), marriages to Koreans or out of pure interest in the language.[citation needed]

The genealogical classification of Korean is debated. Some linguists place it in the Altaic language family; others consider it to be a language isolate. Korean is agglutinative in its morphology and SOV in its syntax. Like Japanese and Vietnamese, Korean has borrowed much vocabulary from the Chinese or created vocabulary on Chinese models.

Modern Korean is written almost exclusively in the Hangul script, which was invented in the 15th century. While Hangul may appear logographic, it is actually a phonemic alphabet organised into syllabic blocks. Each block consists of at least two of the 24 hangul letters (jamo): at least one each of the 14 consonants and 10 vowels. Historically, the alphabet had several additional letters (see obsolete jamo). For a phonological description of the letters, see Korean phonology. Hanja (Chinese characters) and Latin alphabets are sometimes included within Hangul texts, particularly in South Korea.

In ancient Chinese texts, Korea is referred to as "Rivers and Mountains Embroidered on Silk" (????, ????) and "Eastern Nation of Decorum" (??????, ??????).[60] Individuals are regarded as one year old when they are born, as Koreans reckon the pregnancy period as one year of life for infants, and age increments increase on New Year's Day rather than on the anniversary of birthdays. Thus, one born immediately before New Year's Day may only be a few days old in western reckoning, but two years old in Korea. Accordingly, a Korean person's stated age (at least among fellow Koreans) will be one or two years more than their age according to western reckoning. However, western reckoning is sometimes applied with regard to the concept of legal age; for example, the legal age for purchasing alcohol or cigarettes in the Republic of Korea is 19, which is measured according to western reckoning.

Literature[link]

Korean literature written before the end of the Joseon Dynasty is called "Classical" or "Traditional." Literature, written in Chinese characters (hanja), was established at the same time as the Chinese script arrived on the peninsula. Korean scholars were writing poetry in the classical Korean style as early as the 2nd century BC, reflecting Korean thoughts and experiences of that time. Classical Korean literature has its roots in traditional folk beliefs and folk tales of the peninsula, strongly influenced by Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism.

Modern literature is often linked with the development of hangul, which helped spread literacy from the aristocracy to the common people and women. Hangul, however, only reached a dominant position in Korean literature in the second half of the 19th century, resulting in a major growth in Korean literature. Sinsoseol, for instance, are novels written in hangul.

The Korean War led to the development of literature centered on the wounds and chaos of war. Much of the post-war literature in South Korea deals with the daily lives of ordinary people, and their struggles with national pain. The collapse of the traditional Korean value system is another common theme of the time.

Religion[link]

Confucian tradition has dominated Korean thought, along with contributions by Buddhism, Taoism, and Korean Shamanism. Since the middle of the 20th century, however, Christianity has competed with Buddhism in South Korea, while religious practice has been suppressed in North Korea. Throughout Korean history and culture, regardless of separation; the influence of traditional beliefs of Korean Shamanism, Mahayana Buddhism, Confucianism and Taoism have remained an underlying religion of the Korean people as well as a vital aspect of their culture; all these traditions have coexisted peacefully for hundreds of years up to today despite strong Westernisation from Christian missionary conversions in the South[61][62][63] or the pressure from Communism's Juche government in the North.[64][65]

According to 2005 statistics compiled by the South Korean government, about 46% of citizens profess to follow no particular religion. Christians account for 29.2% of the population (of which are Protestants 18.3% and Catholics 10.9%) and Buddhists 22.8%.[66]

Islam in South Korea is practiced by about 45,000 natives (about 0.09% of the population) in addition to some 100,000 foreign workers from Muslim countries.[67]

Cuisine[link]

Main article: Korean cuisine

Korean cuisine is probably best known for kimchi, a side dish which uses a distinctive fermentation process of preserving vegetables, most commonly cabbage. Kimchi is said to relieve the pores on the skin, thereby reducing wrinkles and providing nutrients to the skin naturally. It is also healthy, as it provides necessary vitamins and nutrients. Gochujang (Korean traditional sauce made of red pepper) is also commonly used, often as pepper (chilli) paste, earning the cuisine a reputation for being spicy.

Bulgogi (roasted marinated meat, usually beef), galbi (marinated grilled short ribs), and samgyeopsal (pork belly) are popular meat entrees. Fish is also a popular commodity, as it is the traditional meat that Koreans eat. Meals are usually accompanied by a soup or stew, such as galbitang (stewed ribs) and doenjang jjigae (fermented bean paste soup). The center of the table is filled with a shared collection of sidedishes called banchan.

Other popular dishes include bibimbap which literally means "mixed rice" (rice mixed with meat, vegetables, and red pepper paste) and naengmyeon (cold noodles).

A popular Korean dish[68] is gimbab (also kimbap), made from steamed white rice (bap) and various other ingredients including meat and vegetables. This is rolled in gim (sheets of dried laver seaweed) and served in bite-size slices.[69] Gimbap is often eaten during picnics or outdoor events, or as a light lunch, served with danmuji or kimchi.[70] While an increasingly wide variety of ingredients are used in gimbap, fish (raw or cooked) is rarely used, perhaps due to gimbap's origin as a portable, packable snack, as fish could quickly spoil if not refrigerated.

Instant noodles are also a very popular snack food. Koreans also enjoy food from pojangmachas (street vendors), where one can buy tteokbokki (rice cake and fish cake with a spicy gochujang sauce), fried squid and glazed sweet potato. Soondae, a sausage made of cellophane noodles and pork blood, is widely eaten. There is also an instant noodle called "Ramyun" which is spicy for non-Koreans.

Additionally, some of other common snacks includes "Choco Pie", shrimp cracker, "bbungtigi" (fried rice cracker), and "nu lung ji" (slightly burnt rice). Nu lung ji can be eaten as it is or boiled with water to make a soup. Nu lung ji can be eaten as a snack or a dessert.

The modern Korean school system consists of six years in elementary school, three years in middle school, and three years in high school. Students are required to go to elementary and middle school, and do not have to pay for their education, except for a small fee called a "School Operation Support Fee" that differs from school to school. The Programme for International Student Assessment, coordinated by the OECD, currently ranks South Korea's science education as the third best in the world and being significantly higher than the OECD average.[71]

Korea also ranks second on math and literature and first in problem solving. Although South Korean students often rank high on international comparative tests, the education system is sometimes criticised for its emphasis on passive learning and memorization. The Korean education system is much more strict and structured than the education systems of most Western societies. Also, high cost and dependence on non-school private institutions (Hagwon (??)), a for-profit private institute, academy or cram-school prevalent in South Korea, is criticised as a major social problem. After students enter university, however, the situation is markedly reversed.

One of the best known artifacts of Korea's history of science and technology is Cheomseongdae (???, ???), a 9.4-meter high observatory built in 634.

The earliest known surviving Korean example of woodblock printing is the Mugujeonggwang Great Dharani Sutra.[72] It is believed to have been printed in Korea in 750-751 AD which, if correct, would make it older than the Diamond Sutra. Goryeo silk was highly regarded by Westerners and Korean pottery made with blue-green celadon was of the highest quality and sought after by even Arabian merchants. Goryeo had a bustling economy with a capital that was frequented by merchants from all over the known world.

During the Joseon period the Geobukseon (turtle Ship) was invented, which were covered by a wooden deck and iron with thorns,[73][74][75] as well as other weapons such as the bigyeokjincheolloe cannon (?????, ?????) and the hwacha.

The Korean alphabet hangul was also invented during this time by King Sejong the Great.

While association football remains one of the most popular sports in Korea, the martial art of taekwondo is still considered to be the national traditional sport. Baseball is also increasing in popularity.

Taekwondo[link]

Taekwondo is the national sport of Korea and one of the country's most famous sports. According to ancient Korean history, soldiers learned taekwondo as a principal source of physical training. It combines combat techniques, self-defense, sport, exercise and in some cases meditation and philosophy. Taekwondo has become an official Olympic sport, starting as a demonstration event in 1988 and becoming an official medal event in 2000.

Hapkido[link]

Hapkido is a Korean martial art similar to Jujutsu that employs joint locks, throws, kicks, punches and other striking attacks like attacks against pressure points. Hapkido emphasizes circular motion, non-resisting movements and control of the opponent. Practitioners seek to gain advantage through footwork and body positioning to employ leverage, avoiding the pure use of strength against strength.

Ssireum[link]

Ssireum is a form of wrestling that has been practiced in Korea for thousands of years, with evidence discovered from the Three Kingdoms Period (57 BC to 688). Ssireum is the traditional national sport of Korea. During a match, opponents grip each other by sash belts wrapped around the waist and the thigh, attempting to throw their competitor to the sandy ground of the ring. The first opponent to touch the ground with any body part above the knee or to lose hold of their opponent loses the round.

Ssireum competitions are traditionally held twice a year, during the Tano Festival (the 5th day of the fifth lunar month) and Chuseok (the 15th day of the 8th lunar month). Competitions are also held throughout the year as a part of festivals and other events.
