Back to school means back to the business of classes, part-time jobs, and after-school activities. The Not Your Mother?s cookbook franchise hopes to make that process a little easier with Not Your Mother?s Slow Cooker for iPad.
Created in concert with digital cookbook developer CulinartMedia, this iPad recipe app wants to help you get dinner on the table whether you have a an entire family to feed or just a bunch of hungry roommates.
The app?s UI is relatively basic. Its splash screen divides recipes into standard Crock Pot-friendly categories such as soups, poultry, and puddings & desserts. It also includes a section entitled From the Porridge Pot that serves up six different ways to cook a hot breakfast that?s ready when you wake up.
The user can also view all the recipes from A-Z, which might be helpful if one wants an overview of the 116 included recipes, but there is no way to search for a particular ingredient.
??
While the app integrates a shopping list feature, a brief how-to section, and a menu planner that lets the user send dinner invites directly from the app (Really? If it?s an all-slow-cooker menu you?re planning, I might have other plans), the heart of the app is its recipes, and those recipes are solid. Anyone who uses a slow cooker knows that it?s really easy to make dinner, but it?s hard to make dinner taste good. NYMSC tries to ban the homogenous flavors that is the bane of slow, one-pot cooking.
Slow cooker recipes traditionally favor soups and tough cuts of meat, but NYMSC broadens the type of food one might prepare including Thai Pork with Peanut Sauce, Calamari Fra Diavolo and Kheer (Indian rice pudding). The app also includes recipes for making homemade chicken and vegetable stock, which will appeal to diehard home cooks who are willing to take an extra step for more delicious results.
Some of the recipes require the user to cook ingredients in a skillet before using the slow cooker or puree them with an immersion blender at the end. While these extra steps undoubtedly lead to a better tasting result, some users might be put of by the additional work required.
NYMSC combines the traditional set-it-and-forget-it selling points of a slow cooker with a modern slant. Sure there?s a French Onion soup recipe, but the app also includes instructions to make Dashi and Dal.
Download Not Your Mother?s Slow Cooker Recipes for iPad from the App Store for $4.99.
What I liked: There are a number of enticing vegetarian options that I will try this winter. The breadth of the recipes reflects the way I like to eat.
What I didn?t like: There is no search function. NYMSC is just too big. There are only two videos included in the Know-how section, so video account doesn?t account for the app?s 389 MB size.
To buy or not to buy: Not Your Mother?s Slow Cooker is an ideal choice for users iPad owners who use the device in the kitchen already, or are slow cooker devotees. It costs considerably less than its print counterpart (MSRP = $18.95), though there are also fewer recipes than the print version. A user should be willing to devote the storage space to the app if she plans to use it regularly.
