THE REAL GREEK IN WESTFIELD LAUNCHES TONIA'S GREEK ...

?

?

Tonia ?s Greek Kitchen, the much anticipated debut book from Cypriot-born TV star Tonia Buxton was released on October 9th 2012 with a launch party at The Real Greek restaurant in London?s Westfield Shopping Centre, with Greek food and drink specialities prepared by the restaurant team.

Tonia is best known as the vivacious and animated presenter of the award winning global TV series ?My Greek Kitchen? and its highly rated follow up ?My Cypriot Kitchen? which airs on the Discovery Channel this autumn.

?Tonia?s Greek Kitchen the book, published by Hestia Press, truly reflects the programme. The 117 page hardback brings you a taste of life in the Mediterranean.

?The traditional Greek kitchen and al fresco dining table provide the perfect backdrop for Tonia?s anecdotes revolving around food, family and friends and the simply delicious and traditional Greek recipes handed down to her through the generations.

?Greek food has evolved in a very different way to that of many other cultures, as the region does not have a tradition of haute cuisine. That type of cooking was predominantly for kings and aristocrats, whose wealth enabled them to employ teams of chefs and import ingredients not indigenous to their area. In ancient Greece the meals of the philosopher, the merchant and the people of the lower social orders were essentially the same, all sourced locally and from neighbouring regions.

??Kopiaste? is a word that sums up Greek life ? there is no literal translation but it means something along the lines of ?come join us?, or ?share our food and our company?. These are the words which are prevalent in the Hellenic world, and indeed it is a constant theme throughout Tonia?s Greek Kitchen.

??This is not just a book of recipes but also of many memories, and each aroma, each flavour, whether tangy, salty, bitter or sweet, are all tied in with my mother?s apron strings,? ,? says Tonia

??It is not just the end result that is so integral to Greek food; it is also the preparing of the food and the traditions that are tied-up with it. Women would be, and still are in complete charge of all that goes on in the kitchen, whereas men would be in charge of all cooking performed outside the kitchen, on the barbecue or in the traditional outdoor clay oven.?

?The book caters for all, be it starter, main course or dessert and even for vegetarians as many Greeks are vegetarian, stemming from the days when the wealthy families would only have meat at the weekends when they were not fasting, which for Greeks is to follow a vegan diet.

??Once you read through my book you can understand how we treasure the importance of food and family through the generations and with some of the wonderful recipes and food stories handed down to me by my immediate and extended family, as well as the fantastic characters I met during the filming of my cookery series. I hope everyone enjoys dipping into my Greek Kitchen!?

?Tonia?s Greek Kitchen is published by Hestia Press and is available for ?17.99 from www.toniabuxton.co.uk
