Military Fit for Franchising | CMIT Solutions

Military Fit for Franchising

Every November the country pays tribute to our nation?s veterans on Veterans Day. This year CMIT Solutions engaged more visibly on Veterans Day in our hometown of Austin, Texas. We joined franchise industry leaders from the region, state and nation on the steps of the State Capitol building to raise awareness about the high unemployment issues our veterans face, and to discuss what we are doing with other franchise companies to support veterans and their careers. Our CEO Jeff Connally spoke during the event, talking to those on hand about the responsibility CMIT Solution has to give back to those who have sacrificed for our nation with jobs and business ownership opportunities.

Fortunately, there are job opportunities and entrepreneurial endeavors that veterans can get into that line up perfectly with the skill sets they learned while serving our country.
Our servicemen and women appreciate one thing better than anyone else ? dedication to the task at hand. Veterans recognize that victory requires them to master their craft, continually improve their performance, be part of a team, lead when it is asked of them and to constantly follow the rules. By the time our sailors, soldiers, airmen and marines become veterans, they know how to follow a proven system. As it turns out, veterans possess many of qualities required to be strong franchise business owners. Their ability to adhere to a game plan and execute equals a victory for a proven franchise system.

CMIT Solutions is proud to be a part of the Internation Franchise Association?s (IFA) VetFran program, which helps returning service members access franchise opportunities through training, financial assistance, and industry support. After the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, IFA re-launched its campaign to assist U.S. veterans at that difficult time. Now, IFA?s VetFran program helps returning service members access franchise opportunities through training, financial assistance, and industry support.

CMIT Solutions military veterans program includes a 20% discount on the franchise fee, comprehensive training and launch assistance, 6 months of business coaching, and a managed marketing program for the first year. In addition they become a part of our National team of industry leaders gaining benefit from the collaborative environment of CMIT. Our partner program provides discounts, guaranteed service levels and dedicated support from a wide range of best in breed solutions and products.

Transitioning military men and women exiting the armed forces face an unemployment rate more than three times the national average. It?s no secret that many veterans who served and protected the United States are struggling to adapt to the working world after military life.
A new report from the IFA shows more than 64,000 veterans, military spouses and wounded warriors have started careers in franchising, including 4,314 who have become veteran business owners, since 2011 through Operation Enduring Opportunity, a campaign of the IFA?s VetFran Strategic Initiative.

Franchising is a match for veterans. Successful franchises run on proven and structured systems, and members of the military are used to executing systems, following procedures and striving for operational excellence, which leads to victory in franchising. Veterans are qualified and satisfied franchise owners.

Nationals get Span from Twins for minor leaguer

(AP) ? The Washington Nationals acquired Denard Span from the Minnesota Twins for minor league pitcher Alex Meyer on Thursday, giving the reigning NL East champions a natural center fielder and leadoff hitter ? and setting off a chain reaction in the lineup both offensively and defensively.

A career .284 hitter with 90 steals and a .357 on-base percentage during five seasons with the Twins, Span comes to the Nationals with a set of talents the team has been seeking since it moved to Washington in 2005.

"He's going to bring a dimension to the club that we haven't had before," general manager Mike Rizzo said, "a fast-moving, exciting guy that makes contact and moves the guy around and can fly around the field."

Span's arrival allows the Nationals to move 20-year-old Bryce Harper to a corner outfield spot ? probably left field, with Jayson Werth staying in right. Michael Morse could then move to first base ? the position played by free agent slugger Adam LaRoche.

Rizzo said the team is still in talks with LaRoche and has entertained some trade queries about Morse, so either player could end up at first next season.

"It gives us some options in dealing with our roster," Rizzo said.

Harper, a converted catcher, had some adventures in center field this season but was also a sparkplug, doing enough with his bat and glove to win the NL's Rookie of the Year award.

"He's a terrific young center fielder," Rizzo said. "But we felt for his long-term development and his career path that we wanted to move him out of a taxing position of center field, both mentally taxing and physically taxing. We've accomplished that."

The trade also allows the Nationals to move Werth, an unconventional leadoff hitter, down in the lineup. Werth batted in the top spot this year essentially by default.

"I think his best skillset is farther down," Rizzo said, "in a run-producing type of spot."

Span's name has surfaced in trade rumors for much of the past two years, including some interest from the Nationals in 2010. He asserted himself as one of the Twins' building blocks in 2009 and 2010, emerging as a quality leadoff hitter and versatile outfielder.

Span will be entering the fourth year of a $16.5 million, five-year contract with a $9 million club option for a sixth year. His deal was considered quite a bargain for the Twins given Span's production in the first two seasons, but he only played in 70 games in 2011 because of issues with concussions and migraines, then worked to revamp his diet and workout regimen to try to better manage the situation.

"Hearing trade talks and going through a concussion wasn't easy for me," said Span, who was born in Washington but has never lived in the city. "But fast-forward to today ? and I'm definitely ready. ... I'm ready to be coming to a team that is already in a place to win, and I just hope that I can come here and not get in the way."

Span played in 128 games this year, hitting .284 with four homers and 41 RBIs. He missed time late in the season due to a strained right collarbone, allowing Ben Revere to showcase his speed both in the outfield and at the plate.

"He took a step forward last year in our minds," Twins general manager Terry Ryan said of Revere. "He played well. He played with a wealth of energy. This should fit."

The Twins are coming off back-to-back last-place finishes in the AL Central and were in desperate need of starting pitchers. Scott Diamond is the only proven starter on the roster right now and there is a dearth of power arms in the farm system to help fill the need.

The one area of strength the Twins had to deal for pitching was outfield, with Span and Revere with the big league team and promising prospects such as Aaron Hicks in the minor leagues. So while Span was a valuable player on the field and one of the respected veterans in the clubhouse, he was a natural candidate to be dangled in a trade.

Meyer should help, but not in the short-term. The 6-foot-9 flamethrower went 10-6 with a 2.86 ERA splitting time at Class A Potomac and Hagerstown this year.

"He's a starting pitcher, which we need" Ryan said. "He's got the stuff, he's got the frame, he throws it over the plate. ... He played in two different A-ball leagues last year. On the surface that means he's not as close as you'd like, but we'll let him dictate his pace and see exactly how he responds to it."

(AP) ? Steven Tyler is apologizing ? if Nicki Minaj misinterpreted his recent comments.

The former "American Idol" judge and Aerosmith frontman responded to Minaj's claim that he's a racist.

Minaj took offense to comments Tyler made during an MTV interview in which he said Bob Dylan would likely be immediately dismissed from this year's show.

"Idol" premieres Jan. 16 on the Fox network with Minaj, Mariah Carey and Keith Urban serving as new judges. The rapper called the comment racist and fired an expletive at the Aerosmith frontman, as well.

During an interview with the Canadian entertainment news program "eTalk," Tyler spoke directly to Minaj, saying: "I apologize if it was taken wrong, Nicki."

"I am the farthest from ? what did she say I was? ? a racist," Tyler said in the interview. "I'm the last thing on this planet as far as being a racist. I don't know where she got that out of me saying I'm not sure how she would have judged Bob Dylan. I was just saying that if Bob Dylan came on the show, he would've been thrown off, so maybe I spoke out of turn. But a racist I am not, Nicki."

Dems slam GOP immigration bill as two-faced ? MSNBC

    Updated 3:01 p.m.

After being walloped by Latino voters in the election, the Republican Party?s first?conciliatory?immigration bill?may result in the same?Congressional gridlock that has stalled?previous attempts at reform. Moreover, it is directed at a small sliver U.S. immigrants, calling into question the seriousness of the GOP.

The House will vote on the Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM)?Jobs Act later this week, a?bill that?would give visas to foreigners with high-tech degrees from American universities, while eliminating a program that offers visas to poorer immigrants through a lottery to underrepresented countries.

An earlier version of bill was defeated in the House in September after 80% of Democrats voted against it. At the time,?the House?s Hispanic Caucus, Congressional Black Caucus and Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus all came out against it.

However, this version of the bill is expected to include?a family-friendly provision that would allow the families of legal immigrants, those with green cards, to wait for their own visas within the United States, thus reuniting spouses and children. The AP put the impact at 322,000 husbands, wives, and children who are currently waiting to join a family member in the United States.

Yet, House Democrats say the bill is an effort to appear more pro-immigration, particularly as few expect it to pass in the Senate. ?It is not very much to sweeten the pot for Democrats,? one Democratic House staffer told MSNBC.com.

The bill ?is more about politics and optics for the Republicans than about anything substantive,? Rep. Luis Gutierrez, the chair of the Immigration Task Force of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus told MSNBC.com. ?Republicans are more interested in killing the Diversity Visa program, which goes mostly to immigrants from Africa, than in creating a program for science and tech graduates.?

The STEM bill offers 55,000 visas to high-tech graduates of American universities and their families. It would function by eliminating the Diversity Visa program, an initiative that gives visas to immigrants from countries?typically in Africa and Latin America?with low rates of U.S. immigration and reallocating those visas into the STEM program.

?We don?t really fix the problem by having a zero-sum approach.? Bob Sakaniwa, the associate director of advocacy at the American Immigration Lawyers Association, explained. ?They don?t have enough green cards for legitimate demand.?

Rep. Lamar Smith, the Republican from Texas who sponsored the bill, said that the Diversity Visa program ?invites fraud and is a threat to our national security.? By attracting science and math doctoral graduates, Smith?argued the STEM bill would further economic progress.

?We cannot afford to educate these foreign graduates in the U.S. and then send them back home to work for our competitors,? he said in a statement to MSNBC.com.

Sakaniwa said that while there have been issues and reported security loopholes with the Diversity Visa Program, it doesn?t mean the entire program should be scrapped: ?It?s one thing to try and fix flaws in the system, it?s another thing to throw out the baby with the bath water,? he said.

House Democrats?claimed the re-introduction of the bill with the new family-friendly concession?is a last-ditch effort to appear more pro-immigration, but worry that it signals continued anti-immigration views that could obstruct comprehensive reform in the New Year.

Rep. Zoe Lofgren, the top Democrat on the House Immigration Subcommittee, introduced a competing bill, which she called the ?Attracting the Best and the Brightest? act, that would maintain the Diversity Visa program as well as add STEM visas.

?Republicans know they have an anti-immigrant image problem, yet, unfortunately, they are proceeding with the Smith bill to pretend they?re pro-immigrant, even though it is a divisive bill that actually reduces legal immigration,? Lofgren said.

Democratic staffers say the bill may reduce immigration numbers?because the number of STEM graduates seeking visas could fluctuate over time. The bill allows unused visas to roll over for the first four years, but after that, unused visas would disappear. Other portions of immigration law allow unused visas in programs to roll over into other programs, helping to meet demand.

Rep. Gutierrez also sees a party-wide opposition to immigration.

?The Republicans are still looking at immigration through the old lens that legal immigration is a problem that must be eliminated or never increased,? he said. ?We don?t need to eliminate immigration for one group to allow immigration for another, we can and will reform immigration so that we have a controlled and legal flow that benefits the economy and keeps families together. But that is not what the Republicans are doing this week.?

Senate Republicans also tried on immigration reform proposals for?size,?introducing a limited version of the DREAM Act Tuesday. That competing bill, introduced by outgoing Sens. John Kyl and Kay Bailey Hutchison,?would not put undocumented students on a path to citizenship as the Democratic version would do, instead allowing students to apply for extended visas at three different junctures,??enabling them to stay in the country while they navigate existing channels to citizenship.

Correction: An earlier version of this story implied the family-friendly provision applied only to immigrants with?high-tech degrees, those who fall under the STEM model. In fact, the new provision is broader than that and applies to families of green card holders who are currently waiting outside the U.S. to be rejoined with their family member.

A software glitch caused many Facebook users to find themselves members of old groups, ones they may have left a long time ago. More uncomfortably, some people were suddenly members of groups they'd even?been kicked out of. Facebook issued a statement confirming the details.

"A bug surfaced last night that caused some users to be re-added to groups that they previously belonged to," a Facebook spokesperson told NBC News. "We are working to resolve the issue now. In the meantime, we are rolling out a short-term fix for all closed groups that will make the content of those groups inaccessible to the re-added members."

At first, this bug may seem like an annoyance, leading to little more than?a pile of unwanted?notifications?? that's what we saw firsthand. However,?there could be some pretty nasty side-effects. Before Facebook issued that short-term fix, individuals who were added to closed (or "secret") groups were able to view all the non-public content in those groups as well as the current membership rosters. This could leave some sensitive posts vulnerable (though you really shouldn't be posting anything of that nature on Facebook in the first place, whether publicly or privately).

Even public groups (or closed groups which have been turned public since a user left them) can cause issues, as their membership rosters are now visible to everyone.

"I guess you now know that I belonged to a 'Flava of Love' group," Alberto Lima, a blogger for Noisecast,?wrote in a Facebook message alerting me of the glitch. "I swear I never watched the show!" Sure, Alberto. Sure.

Real Estate Marketing Plan ? Target the Right Audience for Your ...

real estate marketingOnce you have developed a budget and set specific goals, the next step in any real estate marketing plan is to research the desired target audiences to ensure your marketing campaigns are directed at the appropriate customers.? Knowing your target audience maximizes the return on marketing dollars and offers the best chance of generating leads or clients throughout the marketing campaign.

    Use Demographics

There are several methods for determining the correct target market for any real estate marketing campaign.? One way is to use different demographics based on the market you are trying to reach.? Demographics may include age, income, geography or marital status.? Families with children will have different real estate needs than retired executives.? Lower income families do not have the same buying power as those with higher incomes.? In addition, because each demographic in your market shops in different locations and finds information about products in different ways, choosing the right marketing method is crucial to achieving success through any real estate marketing strategy.

    Develop a Consumer Profile

Also helpful when determining the target audience in any real estate marketing campaign is to develop a consumer profile. Customer profiles empower you to create marketing strategies specific to the demographics you are trying to reach. Think about? the beliefs, values, emotions and lifestyle choices of the customer your real estate marketing ideas should reach. Then put together a profile of that person. For example, if you are marketing high-end condominiums, the consumer profile would include an older, wealthier consumer, possibly retired or without children, who enjoys traveling.? These consumers are more likely to purchase a condominium due to the lack of yard maintenance required.

Benefits of Marketing to Targeted Audience

By focusing a real estate marketing plan on targeted audiences, you have the opportunity to focus the advertising budget on those that are most likely to respond to the marketing campaign.? A focused campaign motivates consumers to respond as they feel the campaign is directed specifically at them.? In addition, your advertising dollars reach customers that will generate the best return on your advertising investment.

Knowing your target audience is crucial to your real estate marketing plan in order to get the most out of your advertising budget and to generate more leads or clients.? Visit our website for more tools and resources.

Career Hub: 7 tips to stand out in an interview

7-tipsDuring an executive?s career, one might expect to be interviewed dozens of times. ?Your job at the interview is to be as helpful as you can,? states Claudio Fernandez-Araoz, a seasoned search consultant and author of Great People Decisions.? He comments that most interviewers focus too heavily on experience and not enough on competence, and that it is the executive?s job during the interview, to demonstrate he or she has what it takes to be a perfect fit for the position.

    1.???????? Prepare for the interview

It doesn?t matter how many times you have heard this, it is worth repeating ? do your homework! Changing jobs is vitally important to an executive?s current lifestyle and future potential. So, before the interview, dedicate a reasonable amount of time to research important factors about the company you are interviewing with, such as industry trends, company culture, products, highs and lows of company history, etc.

    2.???????? Create your story

People generally have a higher level of engagement when information is relayed in story fashion. It keeps the listener?s attention if the story is interesting and succinct. Consider putting together 10-12 stories that showcase your talents, skills and career-defining initiatives using the CAR formula (Challenge, Action, Result). Lead with the result to grab the interviewer?s attention and then weave in the challenge and how you achieved the results. These stories are valuable when you can use them to answer an interview question.

    3.???????? Focus on fit?

It is rare that any executive is the exact fit in every way for a new position. Clearly indicate how your potential makes you a top contender for the job. Explain how your leadership, management style, ability to influence, and operational expertise (name a few characteristics) mirror the requirements they are looking for.

    4.???????? First impressions counts

I?d be remiss if I didn?t emphasize that people don?t pay attention to how you speak, body language, clothes, and facial expressions. Similar to capturing the reader?s attention in the first 15 seconds with your resume, you need to present the best impression that will clearly fix you in the mind of the interviewers ? so that they?re thinking of you in that context as they conduct the remainder of the interview. Most importantly, project confidence as you draw attention to details you want to share.?

    5.???????? Present the best ?you?

Employers (and recruiters) can be suspicious of executives that oversell themselves. Whenever possible, I recommend relating ?context? information in your responses to help interviewers understand your value. What was going on at each company when you took the assignment? Why were you hired or promoted? What goals were you given, what challenges did you face, what obstacles did you encounter? A rich context lets the interviewer better understand and absorb what you did and how you can apply those skills and talents to their company.

    6.???????? Prepare for zinger questions

The interviewer?s job is to ask questions that will reveal what they want to know. Perhaps the resume showed a gap in employment, incomplete education, or frequent job changes ? how do you explain those situations to your advantage? A reasonable 3-prong approach might be: 1) prepare a straightforward answer that is short and to the point; 2) prepare a more detailed response that describes the circumstances in more detail; 3) if the interviewer pushes for more, be ready to go into a deeper level of information that will satisfy the interviewer while substantiating your motives. Being prepared is key so the interviewer does not catch you off-guard.?

    7.???????? Use radar perception

Apply the same strategies you rely on in business to your interview. When a business meeting is going ?south?, how do you save or change the outcome? Think about how you can use similar tactics to turnaround an interview. Individual dynamics play a big part in interviews and following interview protocol may or may not always work. Be flexible and adapt to the situation.

These seven tips can help you be more successful in your interviews and ultimately lead to the job offer. Good luck!

UK Criminal Law ? Through the Stages | Criminal Defence Blawg

Going through a criminal case can be a very stressful and worrying time, especially if it is your first time. We hope that knowing what to expect will help you through the stages of criminal investigation / prosecution.

    At the Police Station

If you are suspected of committing a criminal offence you may be either arrested or invited for an interview under caution at a police station. What happens at the police station can often to vital to future proceedings and therefore you should be representation from a specialist criminal law firm such as MJP solicitors. In the UK you are entitled to free legal advice from a solicitor ? do not answer any questions until you have a solicitor present.

The solicitor representing you will be given information about the allegations, without the client present ? this is called disclosure. They will then discuss with you the information they have received and offer advice on how to proceed with the interview. This conversation is confidential.

Once you have spoken to the solicitor you will then be interviewed. The interview is recorded and you will be cautioned.

Once the interview is over you may be charged, bailed to a later date, summonsed or no further action will be taken. Depending on your outcome the solicitor will talk you through the next stages of the investigation, if there are any.

    At the Magistrates? Court

There are two types of offences which can be tried at the Magistrates? Court; Summary Only and Either Way offences.

Summary only offences are typically minor offences, such as motoring offences. Either way offences are generally more serious offences, such as burglary, and can also be dealt with in the Crown Court.

Depending on your financial circumstances you may entitled to legal aid which means you can be represented for free.

What happens at the first appearance depends on the offence, this is something your solicitor will offer advice on. If the offence is serious it may be committed to the Crown Court. The court may adjourn the case to a later date so that you can prepare a defence, or the prosecution can prepare their evidence. For less serious offences the matter maybe dealt with on the day but, of course, it all depends if you wish to plead guilty or not guilty.

If you plead guilty you are entitled to a third of the sentence ? this applies to fines, community orders and sentences of imprisonment.

If you plead not guilty your trial can take place within the Magistrates? Court (at a later date). A trial here is slightly different to a Crown Court trial as there is no jury. The prosecution put forward their evidence to the judge followed by the defence putting forward their argument on your behalf, this may include the use of witnesses.

After all the evidence is given the judge, or judges, will then retire to consider their verdict.

    At the Crown Court

The Crown Court can be considered as the next step up from the Magistrates? Court.

If you have elected to go to trial the case will take place before 12 members of the jury. In short the prosecution will put forward their evidence to the jury, followed by your barrister putting forward your defence to them.

The judge will then summarise the arguments put forward for the jury and then the jury leave the court to discuss the evidence and come to a decision. If the jury can not unanimously decide on a verdict (they all agree the same) and a period of time has passed then a majority verdict will be accepted.

If you are found guilty, or have pleaded guilty, your barrister will mitigate on your behalf putting forward your circumstances to get the best possible sentence.

HP hit with civil securities lawsuit over Autonomy deal

DEAR ABBY: I'm a 51-year-old man. Three years ago, my first and only marriage ended after 20 years. Over the past two years, I have been in a wonderful relationship with a very bright woman, "Toni," who told me she had been married twice before.A year ago, her job required that she move out of state, but we have successfully maintained the long-distance relationship with frequent visits and daily phone calls.A few days ago, I learned by chance that she was briefly married a third time while she was in her early 20s. ...

(AP) ? You won't get much argument from Broncos coach John Fox about the value of a solid starting quarterback. You probably won't get much from Chiefs coach Romeo Crennel, either.

Not after they stood on opposing sidelines and watched Peyton Manning go to work.

The four-time MVP was wooed by both franchises when he was cut loose by Indianapolis, but he never gave Kansas City much thought. Instead, he signed with its AFC West rival, and is now putting together one of the best seasons of his career for Denver, all while Kansas City flounders behind the revolving door of Brady Quinn and Matt Cassel.

The difference on Sunday was striking: Manning threw for 285 yards with touchdowns to Jacob Tamme and Demaryius Thomas in a 17-9 victory, the Broncos' sixth straight. Quinn threw for just 126 yards with an interception as Kansas City lost its eighth straight game.

"Peyton Manning is a Hall of Famer," Chiefs linebacker Derrick Johnson said. "We played pretty good as a defense most of the game, but he made a few plays, one or two more plays than we'd like him to make, and he came up with a victory."

It allowed Manning to break a tie with his boss and Broncos vice president John Elway with his 149th win as a starting quarterback, trailing only Brett Favre (186) for most in NFL history.

Naturally, Manning was quick to pass the praise to someone else.

In this case, it was Knowshon Moreno, who ran for 85 yards after stepping into the starting lineup this week after Willis McGahee landed on injured reserve.

"I've got to tip my hat to Knowshon Moreno," Manning said. "He stepped up today and did a heck of a job. Really an impressive effort by him."

Not so much by the Chiefs offense.

Jamaal Charles ran for 107 yards, but the Chiefs (1-10) were done in by penalties, missed opportunities and a conservative approach that has not yielded a touchdown since the first quarter against Pittsburgh on Nov. 12, a span of more than 11 quarters and 173 minutes.

They could only manage field goals by Ryan Succop for the second straight game.

"We struggled a bit against the run, but they're a very good run team," Fox said. "Something we work very hard on is the red area, and holding them to three field goals was a key in the game."

Kansas City actually established an early lead for the third straight game on Succop's first-quarter field goal, and seemed to be outplaying Denver (8-3) the entire first half.

They had a chance to go ahead 10-0 when they faced fourth-and-2 at the Denver 4, but Chiefs coach Romeo Crennel elected to kick another field goal against a team that had scored at least 30 points in five straight games, drawing a chorus of boos from the crowd.

"I thought points on the board were important," Crennel said.

Problem was that touchdowns trump field goals.

On the Broncos' final drive of the half, Manning completed five straight passes before finding Tamme on third-and-goal from the Kansas City 7 with 18 seconds left. The touchdown catch, on which the tight end dragged safety Eric Berry into the end zone, gave the Broncos a 7-6 lead and wiped out all the hard work that Kansas City had put in over the first 25 minutes.

"It was huge to get a touchdown there," Manning said.

Denver's Matt Prater missed his second field goal try of the game early in the third quarter, and Succop's 49-yarder gave Kansas City its first second-half lead of the season.

But once again, a failure to get into the end zone proved fatal.

Manning, who surpassed 3,000 yards passing earlier in the day, rode the legs of Moreno into Chiefs territory, and that's when he lobbed a pass over nickelback Jalil Brown and into the hands of Thomas for the go-ahead, 30-yard touchdown reception late in the third quarter.

"That was a great catch down the sideline against tight coverage," Manning said.

The Chiefs twice had chances to overcome the 14-9 deficit late in the fourth, but they failed to move the ball after taking over at their own 37. After getting it back, Crennel chose to punt on fourth-and-6 at the Broncos 47 after a series of penalties ruined the drive.

It was their last chance to retake the lead.

Denver tacked on a field goal by Prater in the closing seconds, and after Jacksonville held on to beat Tennessee, the Chiefs were left as the league's only one-win team.

"We're frustrated every week. Every time we get a loss, it's frustrating," Charles said. "I don't know when it's going to stop, but hopefully we can did deep down in our souls and find a way to get out of this."

NOTES: Chiefs WR Dexter McCluster (head/neck) and S Kendrick Lewis (shoulder) left the game with injuries. ... Kansas City was 3 for 14 on third downs. ... Chiefs LB Justin Houston had two sacks. ... Broncos LB Von Miller had his 14th sack of the season.

4 Thanksgiving Stocks for Your Table (and Portfolio) ? Investing Daily

According to the National Turkey Federation, U.S. turkey consumption has more than doubled since 1970; in 2011, the average American put away 16.1 pounds of the bird a year.

Obviously, holidays are a peak time, accounting for 31% of total consumption. But that?s down from 50% in 1970, which means more Americans are eating turkey outside the typical Christmas and Thanksgiving periods.

In 2009 (the last year for which stats are available), processors churned out $16 billion worth of turkey-related products. Last year, 248.5 million turkeys were produced in the U.S.

Here?s a look at four stocks with connections to the quintessential American Thanksgiving meal. Two control the nation?s leading turkey producers, while the others make stuffing and desserts, including pumpkin pie.

    1. Seaboard Corporation (AMEX: SEB) owns 50% of Butterball, which processed 1.30 billion pounds of turkey last year. Butterball?s 675,000-square-foot plant in Mt. Olive, North Carolina, is also the world?s largest turkey processing facility.

Seaboard is actually an agricultural conglomerate whose main divisions focus on pork processing, ocean shipping and grain trading. It also operates a number of smaller businesses, including an alternative energy subsidiary that converts pork fat and vegetable oils into biodiesel fuel.

Seaboard has over 90 years of history and has never split its stock, so it isn?t cheap at $2,162 a share. Still, it is up 5.6% in the last six months. The shares also trade at a reasonable 10.9 times the company?s last 12 months of earnings.

    2. In second spot is Hormel Foods (NYSE: HRL) which processed 1.29 billion pounds last year through its Jennie-O Turkey Store division. Its other businesses include Grocery Products (including Stagg chili and the SPAM brand), Refrigerated Foods (such as Hormel party trays and meats) and Specialty Foods (which makes private-label products).

Minnesota-based Hormel reported its latest results on Tuesday. In the quarter ended October 28, the company saw sales gains at three of these divisions, with the exception being Refrigerated Foods, which posted a 2.6% decline from a year ago. Turkey products sales were a highlight, with a 5.0% gain, though Grocery Products was the standout, with a 20.6% gain thanks to strong sales of SPAM products and Hormel chili.

As a result, Hormel?s overall sales rose 3%, to $2.17 billion. Per share earnings rose 14%, to $0.49 from $0.43. That fell just short of the consensus forecast of $0.50.

The company also offers a tasty dividend; it announced that it is raising its quarterly payout for the 47th straight year, from $0.15 to $0.17. The new yearly rate of $0.68 yields 2.27%.

    3. What?s turkey without stuffing? Two years ago, Investing Daily?s Jim Fink picked Campbell Soup (NYSE: CPB) as one of his favorite Thanksgiving dinner stocks (Fink also liked Seaboard, above). That?s partly because of his view that the company?s Pepperidge Farm stuffing is tops in the category. Kraft Foods Group?s (NasdaqGS: KRFT) Stove Top stuffing, he wrote, ?is second-rate and pales in comparison.?

As well, Campbell makes broths, stocks and gravies, along with its core soup products, for the U.S. market through its U.S. Simple Meals segment (which supplied 38% of its overall sales in the latest quarter).

Like Hormel, Campbell reported its latest results on Tuesday. In the quarter ended October 28, 2012, its sales rose 8% from a year ago, to $2.34 billion. That mostly reflected its recent purchase of California?s Bolthouse Farms, which produces carrots, salad dressings and juices.

The company earned $245 million, or $0.78 a share, down from $265 million, or $0.82. Without restructuring charges and costs related to the Bolthouse purchase, Campbell?s earnings gained 5%, to $279 million. Per-share profits rose 7%, to $0.88, because it had fewer shares outstanding thanks to its recent buybacks. That was ahead of the consensus estimate of $0.85.

The stock fell slightly in the wake of the earnings report, but it?s still up more than 10% in the past six months. Campbell also trades at a 15.3 times its last 12 months of earnings, roughly in line with the competition. As well, it pays a $0.29-a-share quarterly dividend, for an attractive 3.21% yield.

    4. Top off your Thanksgiving feast with Sara Lee pumpkin pie. The iconic dessert brand is now controlled by Hillshire Brands Co. (NYSE: HSH) after Sara Lee spun off D.E. Master Blenders 1753 N.V. (Amsterdam: DE), which sells coffee and tea in Europe, Brazil and Thailand, in June. Sara Lee then took the Hillshire name for its North American business.

Hillshire gets 15% of its sales from desserts and frozen bakery products, though the bulk of its business (85%) is packaged meat. It controls some of the best-known banners in the industry, such as Jimmy Dean, Ballpark and Hillshire Farm.

The company has recently been the focus of takeover rumors, with Hormel named as a potential buyer, along with Tyson Foods (NYSE: TSN).

?Hillshire could be an acquisition target,? Alexia Howard, a Bernstein analyst, told Bloomberg last week. ?It?s high margin. It?s less volatile in terms of profit. The brands bring you more negotiating leverage with retailers.?

As well, there are few other similar acquisition targets in the space. Hillshire?s main competitor, Oscar Meyer, is already owned by Kraft Foods Group.

US citizens using tablets like never before - Online Gambling News

    Jamie Hinks
    November 23, 2012
    No Comments

US citizens using tablets like never before30 percent of American citizens are expected to use a tablet in 2013 as ownership continues to soar on a nationwide basis. Statista?s latest chart of the day shows that residents of the Land of the American Dream are buying devices in their droves with cheaper Android tablets helping to fuel the market by making the devices far more accessible.

eMarketer figures show the actual figure on tablet users in the USA in 2013 will be 99 million ? a rise of 42 percent on what we can expect by the end of 2012. There is also good news for social gaming firms looking at the US market with a projected 6 percent rise in the number of social gamers in 2013 meaning the number will reach 81 million. Smartphone gamers will also see a rise of 28 percent to 98 million with both smartphone and social now far outstripping the console gaming market.

The figures will do even more to boost a social and mobile gambling industry that has had more than the odd shot in the arm. Mobile is currently the fastest growing vertical and some people put the estimates at what the social gambling industry could achieve as anywhere up to $100billion by 2017.

The more people owning and using tablets will only make this market grow further with the social element that comes with tablets meaning they are ripe for even more growth. Thrown in any US online gambling regulation and those looking at the US market will get pretty bloody excited.

When you also consider that 10 percent of all eCommerce is now being spent on mobile devices the opportunity in this area is simply too large to put a realistic number on and could still outstrip even the most optimistic of estimates.

Eased Myanmar sanctions no gold rush for US firms

YANGON, Myanmar (AP) ? Signs of a boom abound in Myanmar. Flights to Yangon are full, hotel rooms booked solid. Foreign bars are packed with well-fed Westerners in khakis and jeans, 21st century prospectors drawn to this golden frontier.

Myanmar got a further boost this week from President Barack Obama, who became the first serving U.S. president to visit the long-isolated nation, an endorsement that has not gone unnoticed by global investors. But despite America's leadership in welcoming Myanmar back into the international community, U.S. companies have so far not signed any big deals ? a situation few expect to change soon.

Washington is unwinding its web of sanctions against Myanmar, but the suspension of most legal barriers to business in this nation of 60 million is unlikely to be a gold rush for American firms. Rolling back sanctions will take time, and concerns about corruption and political blowback at home complicate efforts by U.S. companies to move in big and fast. There is confusion about what is permitted, as well as onerous new reporting requirements, and lingering doubt about whether the changes, both in Myanmar and in U.S. policy, will stick.

What's at stake is one of the last big untapped consumer markets, as well as access to significant natural resources, including oil and gas, hydropower, timber, gems and some of the most fertile land on earth. Sandwiched between India and China ?the world's fastest growing major economies ? Myanmar today has some of the world's lowest levels of Internet and cellphone use, as well as a dearth of good roads, ports, hotels, hospitals, schools and electricity.

Underlying the debate about sanctions, which many companies would like to see lifted more decisively, are questions about what role American business should play in Southeast Asia's poorest country. Speaking Monday at the University of Yangon, Obama said American companies must "lead by example." His administration has sought to reinforce good business practices, encouraging transparency by requiring companies that invest more than $500,000 in Myanmar to report details to the State Department, which will make some of the information public. And Washington is banning U.S. firms from doing business with the country's biggest, and most corrupt, businessmen.

Whether those strictures ? which put American firms at a competitive disadvantage ? will achieve their desired aim is a matter of debate, but the ideas they enshrine may prove valuable in the long run.

Thant Myint-U, an author and adviser to Myanmar's reformist president Thein Sein, said that the biggest challenge facing Myanmar is finding a new economic model to support reform momentum.

"No one knows how to fix the economy after a half century of misrule in a way that's going to raise incomes and create jobs in the way we have to to keep the reform process on track," he said. Neither of the two dominant business models in Myanmar today ? alliances between crony businessmen and largely Chinese investors or leftist isolationism ? offers a good path forward for the country, he said. He hopes American businesses will help forge a third way.

The United States has taken a calibrated approach to easing sanctions, renewing or expanding some strictures even as it unwinds others. While this gives the administration leverage should Myanmar's political reform lose momentum, it creates confusion for investors.

The United States first sanctioned Myanmar in September 1988, the month after the military junta brutally cracked down on popular protests. Over the next two decades, Congress and the president responded to human rights violations and the suppression of Myanmar's democratic opposition by expanding the network of sanctions. All told, Myanmar specific sanctions are enshrined in six federal laws and a series of executive orders, often with overlapping provisions, according to a detailed study by Asian affairs specialist Michael Martin for the Congressional Research Service. In addition, there are so-called functional bans ? laws that, for example, prohibit the U.S. from providing military training and selling arms to any country deemed, like Myanmar, to use child soldiers.

Washington has been quick to respond to reform efforts in Myanmar. As Myanmar released political prisoners and held elections which saw opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi take a seat in Parliament, Washington suspended restrictions on new investment, financial services, multilateral assistance, and most recently, imports from Myanmar.

Now, the biggest remaining legal block for U.S. companies is a list of "specially designated nationals" and companies that U.S. firms are barred from doing business with because of their alleged links to violence, oppression and corrupt practices. U.S. companies complain that it's difficult to comply with this list, given the challenges of due diligence in Myanmar and the habit of cronies to pick up aliases and create complex subsidiaries.

"We're encouraging reform in the government, we can't encourage reform in individuals?" said Richard Vuylsteke, president of the American Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong. He urges Washington to pare the list as fast as possible and "give these guys an incentive to integrate into the system."

Rather than revoke sanctions ? which for some would require an act of Congress ? the administration has suspended them, meaning they could be reinstated if Myanmar's reform momentum is broken. In addition, with each step forward, Washington has taken one small step back.

Three days before Obama landed in Yangon, Washington suspended its ban on most imports, a move that's expected to revitalize Myanmar's garment industry. At the same time, the administration added seven companies to the list of entities U.S. firms can't do business with. In July, when Washington suspended the ban on new investment and the provision of financial services, it also instated reporting requirements and expanded sanctions to include individuals who undermine reform, engage in human rights abuses or engage in military trade with North Korea. The White House said it was offering a clear message: "individuals who continue to engage in abusive, corrupt or destabilizing behavior going forward will not reap the rewards of reform."

Aside from sanctions, U.S. companies are subject to strict anti-corruption laws and reputational risk at home, should they choose the wrong business partner in Myanmar.

"The country is rife with corrupt business practices which would be illegal here," said Priscilla Clapp, who served as charge d 'affairs at the U.S. Embassy in Yangon from 1999 to 2002. "U.S. businesses are held to those rules. They have to condition their Burmese business partners to our rules. That's not easy because you're changing centuries of bad behavior."

In the meantime, companies from other countries are sweeping into Myanmar.

"It's been a vacuum for U.S. companies for a couple of decades," said John Goyer, senior director for Southeast Asia at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce in Washington. "They have a lot to learn about the market and the operating environment, whereas companies from China, Thailand, Malaysia know the players, they know the environment. It's home field advantage."

The U.S. is also at a disadvantage when trying to compete with companies from, for example, Japan, which can offer package deals of investment, aid and debt forgiveness padded with government money.

"Companies from Asia can come in with financing packages all wrapped up as part of the deal," Goyer said. In America, he added, "there's not unlimited government backing for private companies to go in and provide ports or railways or infrastructure."

Anthony Nelson, associate director for Myanmar at the U.S-ASEAN Business Council, said that for many U.S. companies, Myanmar is the largest country in the world where they don't have a presence. "That kind of thing doesn't come along very often," he said. "It's never going to come again."

But even Nelson is not talking of a gold rush.

"Take a look at Vietnam," he said. "When we normalized relations with Vietnam, companies came in and looked around. They maybe opened representative offices, but it was 10 or 15 years before the big boom of investment from U.S. companies. When U.S. companies move, they move in a big way, but there's time that people need to look at what they're doing."
