Cisco (Nasdaq: CSCO), Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) and Avaya are the top vendors in the unified communications and collaboration (UC&C) market, according to an IDC MarketScape report?released?last week.
Other vendors identified as major players or contenders in the market are Aastra, Alcatel-Lucent (NYSE: ALU), Digium, Huawei, IBM (NYSE: IBM), Interactive Intelligence (Nasdaq: ININ), Mitel (Nasdaq: MITL), NEC, ShoreTel (Nasdaq: SHOR), Siemens Enterprise Communications (NYSE: SI) and Toshiba America.
IDC said it is seeing an increased interest in UC&C products, fueled by growth in segments such as mobility, collaboration, videoconferencing and business process integration with communications.
At the same time, many enterprises face UC&C challenges over cost justification, return on investment, proper use cases, implementation and support skills and problems integrating UC&C products with existing systems.
"UC&C customers have a variety of excellent platforms to choose from, but also the challenge of figuring out which vendor solutions are most appropriate for them. Selecting a UC&C vendor solution should be based on several factors including whether vendors meet the organizational criteria for call control, user profiles, communication and collaborative applications, cost savings and benefits, and revenue-generating opportunities," advised Rich Costello, IDC senior research analyst for unified communications/enterprise communications infrastructure.
Gartner agrees with IDC that Cisco, Microsoft and Avaya are leaders in the unified communications market, but Gartner adds Siemens Enterprise Communications to the leader group?in its latest Magic Quadrant report.
Gartner lists as strong challengers Alcatel-Lucent, Huawei, IBM and NEC. Niche players are Aastra, Digium, Interactive Intelligence, ShoreTel and Toshiba. Mitel is listed as a visionary, but with less ability to execute than the market leaders.
