The North Carolina Jazz Repertory Jazz Orchestra Presents ...

The Art of Cool ProjectThe Jazz Foundation of North Carolina and The North Carolina Jazz Repertory Orchestra (NCJRO) are celebrating their 20th season with a narrated concert entitled The Jazz Century, featuring David Hartman and guest trumpet soloist Claudio Roditi, Tuesday, February 19, 2013 at 7:30 p.m. at Hill Hall Auditorium on the campus of UNC-Chapel Hill. This concert will be part of the 36th Carolina Jazz Festival events. Tickets are $15 for general admission; $10 for seniors; and $5 for students (with ID). Tickets may be purchased at Memorial Hall Box Office or online at http://memorialhall.unc.edu, by phone (919-843-3333), or at the door the night of the concert in the rotunda of Hill Hall.

Host and narrator David Hartman is a distinguished television personality who served as host of Good Morning America and various documentaries for PBS. Claudio Roditi is a distinguished Brazilian jazz trumpeter with a storied career that includes work with Dizzy Gillespie, Paquito D?Rivera and many jazz luminaries.

The Jazz Century will feature Jim Ketch as the Music Director and NCJRO band members as soloists displaying their musical gifts as they perform the music of The Original Dixieland Jazz Band, Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, Benny Goodman, Count Basie, Dizzy Gillespie, Ray Wetzel, Fats Waller, George Gershwin, Charles Mingus, Cedar Walton and Jae Fields.

The program will guide audiences through a broad array of jazz music composed and performed between 1918 and 2013! Along the journey led by David Hartman you will hear vocalists Kathy Gelb and Mark Wells, as well as many of the gifted instrumental soloists of the NCJRO including Ed Paolantonio, Gregg Gelb, Jeff Bair, Aaron Hill, Lucian Cobb, Jim Ketch, Leroy Barley.

The Jazz Foundation of North Carolina is a major supporter of jazz in our state, raising funds to support jazz programming and workshops for North Carolina schools. The Foundation is the driving force behind having video programs distributed to the Cultural Arts Directors in all 100 counties of our state. They promote the timeless relevancy of jazz, swing, and the blues by presenting the finest jazz musicians in North Carolina in concert and in recordings.

Founded in 1993, The North Carolina Jazz Repertory Orchestra has become the state?s most celebrated jazz orchestra, celebrating the ongoing legacy of big band music by regularly performing music by Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Benny Goodman, Stan Kenton, Charles Mingus, Thelonious Monk, Oliver Nelson, as well as staff writers William Fritz and Gregg Gelb. In addition to an active concert schedule, the NCJRO maintains an active presence in the jazz education scene providing clinics and educational programs across the state. The orchestra introduces children to jazz and big band music by presenting concerts and workshops in elementary, middle, and high schools. Their educational component, Jazz Express, continually receives accolades from across the state, having received numerous ?Top Ten,? and ?Best of?? awards from the Spectator and the Independent weeklies. NCJRO has also recorded CDs and documentaries for UNC-TV, hosted jazz greats such as Branford Marsalis, John Pizzarelli, and Slide Hampton in concert, and also spawned the creation of a number of adult jazz bands being created across North Carolina.
